Default AI is better than human at Pinball ! - Matrix is coming

The work—presented in Nature—is more than just a bit of fun. It demonstrates the power of modern “machine learning” techniques, which allow machines to figure things out for themselves. The computer was not given any information about the rules of the games. Instead, like a human, it inferred how to play by watching the screen and the score, figuring out concepts like “alien” and “power up” for itself.
I think it's quite interesting what you can do nowadays. It would be great if they start using this type of programming in games, where the NPCs react to you differently based on your actions (in a non-scripted) fashion.

Well, if it can't come anywhere near a human in playing MS Pacman it has a loooong way to go.

Depends on the human opponent to some extent ;-) Also, you need to cripple AI to some extent since it generally has an unfair advantage e..g complete knowledge of the system, access to faster-than-human reflexes, ability to compute huge numbers of moves when the poor old meatbag is still starting o think about them.

Cripple an AI or augment a human but yeah, not the contest of the equals.

Yes, but the article has a link to the paper's abstract and it says that the computer does not get the rules fed to it.

All it has is access to the score and all the pixels and when the score goes up it learns what to do.

That's quite impressive imo
