Default Drakensang - Review @ Strategy Informer

March 23rd, 2009, 18:35
Strategy Informer posts their review for Radon Labs' rpg, Drakensang:The Dark Eye, scoring it 8/10:
…You start off with your character on the way to meet a friend, and then all of a sudden youíre fulfilling one of those pesky destinies youíve been trying so hard to avoid all your life. Donít you just hate it when that happens? Still, one could argue itís a time-proven formula. Along the way you meet up with several NPCís who can become ‘followersí of yours, and who you can recruit up to 3 to form a party with you. These followers are a diverse range of races, skills and characteristics, in order to allow you to specialise your character more fully without worrying about the fact that you canít use magic, or a bow. Most characters also have their own side story that surrounds them, and being the unfortunate soul who asked them to join you, youíll most likely end up having to deal with their problems.
Conclusion:
If you were to summon Drakensang into one word, it would be ‘goodí. Unfortunately, thatís all it is, whilst the story is well thought out and executed, thereís nothing new or exciting. Combat isnít particularly ground-breaking either. All in all, it takes several hallmark traditions, makes it their own, and re-creates them well, but doesnít do much thatís new. Hardcore fans of the series will enjoy this game, people who like the old school RPGís will also enjoy this game. Heck, even people who just like a good story, or fancy some offline action for a change will find this game enjoyable. Just donít expect it to do anything different.
More information.

I am really digging Drakensang. I bought on a whim (bored impulse, really), without any familiarity with the title, TDE, or pen & paper gaming in Germany as a whole.

Maybe it's because of those facts that I am liking it so much. I like it the way I liked the first Dungeon Siege (and I realize that DS is rpg lite where Drakensang is very much NOT).

Radon really did a good job here.

I loved Drakensang up to the last 20% or so of the game, then it was too hack&slashy for my taste. Still, I can't wait to play the prequel!
