Default Interesting links for gamers (Indie games, Abandonware, Mods)

October 20th, 2008, 20:43
I made a post on my blog about innovative, little known roguelikes, the post includes UnReal World, The Doryen Arena, Dwarf Fortress (of course!), Fatherhood, and Alan's Psychedelic Journey, among others.

The focus of the blog is indie games, old school games, roguelikes, linux gaming, and pretty much any other topic which would interest gamers who prefer old school gaming, party based RPGs, and so on.

I'm pretty much hoping to make web design my job, and I feel like there's no better way to go about it than writing about gaming, I know that people at these forums would be interested in the posts.

There's also a link to the Internet Rogue Database, which has all kinds of little known roguelikes, so it's good for finding those little gem rogues that not many people know about.

I played it a long time ago but from what I remember I don't understand why you had this precision. I have an exact reverse feeling (well sort of as I don't know PE), if there's a game where I had a feeling of a world and events linked with my previous choices, it's this game.

Interesting links for fans of the Gold Box Games done by SSI. These are alll the links to the FRUA (Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures) that I know of. What they have done with that old engine is amazing to say the least. Still can't compare graphically to todays games, but if you want to try something different then you should check some of these places out.

FRUA FORUMS:
(Recenty opened, heatlhy activity on it, they seem to gearing towards releasing an update to FRUA (Dungeon Craft) Any help you need either getting their mods working, mod reviews or about the finer points of the rules within the game. They are the go to guys.
http://ua.reonis.com/

FRUA Yahoo Group:
(Very active!)
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/ua/

UA File Archive:
(This is where they store all the modules aka adventures. There are just too many to choose from, I would recomened you go to the Yahoo group or the forms and ask about the best adventures out there.)
http://frua.rosedragon.org/

All you need to get started playing these great adventures is:
1. FRUA itself:
It's on Abandonia. I know some people think that even abandonware sites are pirating, but show me where it is being sold and I will change this portion of the post. In the meantime this is one of many that it is available to download.http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/85…dventures.html

2. You will need UASHELL:
This is a hack that enables the program to use the enhanced features the modders have made to the game. Without it you can still play some of the adventures, but you will only be able to choose *Non-Hacked* adventures. To tell the truth, the hacked adventures add all kinds of features like real intros that they made themselves and being able to use all the other icons and features that just wasn't possible without it.
Here is a great link with tons of info on what UAshell is and does. Plus how to install it and where to download it:
http://frua.isgreat.org/index.php?topic=464.0

3. Follow the instructions for loading UAShell.
4. Load an adventure
5. Off you go on a brand spanking new adventure in the FRUA universe

If you have problems with UAshell or are thinking about making your own adventure then head over to the FAQ, it can pretty much answer any question you have and if it doesn't someone at the forums or Yahoo Group can answer it.
http://www.eledar.net/Gaming/Frua/fruafaq/hacks.htm

Plus I should add, not all of the adventures are Forgotten Realms. They've made space adventures, Super Hero ones and all kinds of them. There is a lot of vairity to what you want to play. They all use the game engine, but other than that they've been remade into new games entirely.

One last thing. Dungeon Craft has been in the making for years now. I'm starting to see a lot more activity concerning that game. I'm hoping that they can finish it some time soon. How soon, I haven't a clue, but at least they're working on it again.
http://uaf.sourceforge.net/

I know a lot of people can't get over the graphics part of the game, but still there are some of us who still like these old game. It's nice to see that new adventures are being built even now and reviewed over at the Yahoo group and the forums. The forums are only a few months old, but has quite a lot of activity on it.

Anyways, have fun

Despite all my rage.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know of any mods for FRUA that have more Fallout/Arcanum inspired gameplay? Which means more multiple solution paths and different things to do besides non-stop grinding? I really enjoy the gold box games combat, I want some variety in the gameplay as well. IS there anything like this out there (haha!)

To sum it up, I feel our space program ended up like this. "It's one small step for man. One giant leap for man kind. Oops I fell on my butt after that leap and can't get up anymore."

Very good single player NWN 1 mod:

Maugeter - The Keys to the City v1.0.4

Homepage

Maugeter is a low-level, low-combat module set in a unique fantasy world. It is a classic tale - you are a nondescript child of farmers who has travelled to the big city in search of adventure, or money, or fame, or power. The big difference is that you are not the foretold one, there's no prophecy and you won't be saving the world. This module is about exploring, meeting interesting characters and adventuring within an imaginative high-magic, low-fantasy urban setting. No one is going to tell you that all their hopes rest with you, because they don't know or care who you are. The city is bigger than you.

I don't remember whether anyone has already posted this … But I received the information that Dink Smallwood is now Freeware (and there are additionall add-on modules for it available, too).

A very nice freeware-rpg:

Everlong

turn based combat - cool story - an excellent rpg - 30 to 50 hours of gameplay.

Everlong is a free amateur Role-Playing-Game set in an immersive fantasy world of dragons, knights, and wizards. The mighty and merciless Cirigoth Empire seeks dominion over the entire globe, and it will not be long before they succeed. Soon the kingdom of Seraphia, the last free land of the west, will fall to the Cirigoth's puppet state Tyr-Anon, leaving only the divided countries of the east unconquered.

Trouble is brewing within the vast lands of the Cirigoth Empire, however, as an organization known as the Valiantide continues to generate sympathy and threatens to spark armed rebellion. A dark knight, one of the Cirigoth military elite, has also turned traitor and escaped pursuit.

Despite the immediate danger posed by the Valiantide, the emperor's advisers have convinced him to continue hunting vigorously for the fugitive soldier, whom it is suspected holds a secret and tremendous power. The fate of the world may be decided by which side the dark knight fights for, but the agents of the Cirigoth are closing in and time is running out for him to reach safety from the impending shadow.

Using Enterbrain's RPGMaker2003@ engine, Everlong is designed to create a nostalgic or "old-school" feel similar to the 16-bit and two dimensional RPGs of the SNES era. You must travel through a highly detailed medieval world, interacting with dozens of colorful characters, both friendly and enemy, to advance the story while combating the many monsters that will attempt to hinder your journey. Also be on the lookout for cameos by infamous RPG characters and familiar plot elements.
Highly recommend for turn based combat and big story fans.
2 thumbs up!

KING'S FIELD games built with Sword of Moonlight:
http://www.swordofmoonlight.com/

Thanks to Weissvulf, the Japanese Sword of Moonlight editor was translated to English and a few really well done games were released.

'Dark Destiny' is an epic, really well done game and is the best one in my opinion. 'Diadem of Maunstraut' is also really well done. Both are definitely worth checking out.

Does it also avoid the typical annoying Oblivion issues (like level scaling) or do you need additional mods for that?
