Earthrise - Blasted Area

by Myrthos, 21:36

The blasted area, one of the areas in Earthrise is featured in thte latest installment of Earthrise developer journals.

When the reborn humanity explored their new home, they found the ruins of one of the last cities to be occupied, but gave it no more thought than to note that its surroundings were now inhabited by viscous mutants – much like everywhere else on Enterra. Continoma soon set in motion their plan for terraforming the island, but during the extermination of the flora and fauna in the southern parts of the island the Backlash occurred. The exterminators found themselves in the worst possible scenario facing a mutant stampede and were forced to use all the tools at their disposal to trigger total chemical devastation on the region. The destruction had little strategic impact on the Backlash, but the landscape in the region is now composed of scorched black hills and ravines and came to be called The Blasted Area.

Earthrise - Developer Journal @ MMORPG.com

by Myrthos, 17:21

In the Earthrise developer journal at MMORPG.com the lowlands are discussed.

The Lowlands form a natural crossroad between the spheres of influence of several important factions and by virtue of this fact alone, they serve as a theatre for a multitude of armed conflicts; some open and some not as readily apparent for those ignorant of the subtle behind-the-scenes world of politics and intrigue. To the northwest, the steppe reaches the Autonomy - a breeding ground for treachery and ambition, whose denizens would readily spill into the Lowlands under the vicious will of their leader Shepherd, if not kept in check by force of arms. To the northeast is the Arboretum - the lush tangle of bio-engineered forests and gardens that the people of Natura call home. To the south a clutter of small mesas and foothills slowly transitions into the imposing ranges of the Cascade Mountains whose stout profile projects the security and protection guaranteed by Noir's very Core. To the southwest a narrow pass meanders through the rocky ridges and connects the Lowlands with the Eastern Garden where the seat of power of Her Eminence Governor Mao is located. And to the West, against a substantial and unapproachable mass of granite, the overgrown ruins of Arcology II are huddled with the Kodiak's Den nested amongst them.

Earthrise - Interview @ GameSnafu

by Myrthos, 22:14

Atanas Atanasov, Director of Masthead Studios, was interviewed by GameSnafu about the mechas and other stuff in Earthrise.

4. Can a player go through Earthrise by himself? Are there any advantages to doing so? How does the story line affect solo and group gameplay?

Earthrise’s PvE will be very solo-friendly and allow characters to approach almost all challenges on their own without requiring a party or raid-sized group. Only few situations would be extremely difficult or resource-consuming for a single character to take on, and those will come into play in the upper end of the mid-game to end-game spectrum. Players will have many reasons to party or stay alone as trust is a very important factor in Earthrise. Many players would prefer to protect themselves against enemies by belonging to a group, but how well do you know or trust your group? One of the advantages of solo play is that you can always trust yourself.

Earthrise - Interview @ Onlinewelten

by Myrthos, 20:50

Onlinewelten interviewed game designer Apostel Apostolov about their MMO in development, Earthrise. The interview is available in both German and English.

Onlinewelten: Earthrise takes place in a post-apocalyptic world. Would you give us a summary about the background story and the scenario? (Are there important persons, factions, challenges or enemies we will encounter in Earthrise?)

Apostol Apostolov: Earthrise has a very unique take on the post-apocalyptic world; it actually could be classified as a post-post-apocalyptic setting. The world, as we know it, has been consumed in a destructive war for the last remaining resources and our society has been wiped out, but the human race lives on through a cloning project called Continoma, built on the remote Pacific island of Enterra. Brought to life once the environment was considered hospitable, humanity met the dangers of vicious mutants that had been warped by the aftermath. Humanity won over nature, perhaps only temporarily, and the city of Sal Vitas was built as a nexus of technological advancement.

Cloning has become commonplace and new sources of energy are being discovered, causing new turmoil of dominance within Continoma. With growing power concentrated in the hands of the government that can decide who gets cloned back from death and who doesn’t, corruption is inevitable and those who stand against the government gather in a shadowy movement called Noir. But still unable to clone themselves due to the technology remaining in Continoma’s hands, Noir remains weak and unable to strike back. After an unsuccessful coup, rebel scientists bring the technology of cloning to Noir. Nothing stands in the way of Noir to prepare for an open conflict against Continoma, and tension builds up in the new brave world. Players will emerge in a complex political environment, where two factions prepare for war, minor organizations follow their own agenda and struggle for power, and new opportunities rise in the wasteland where rare new resources are being discovered.

Earthrise - Interviews

by Myrthos, 21:20

If your French is any good you can go and read the interview Jeux Online had with Atanas Atanasov about Earthrise. I'm not copying a piece this time as my French is no good.

Then again my French is better than my Italian. If however you love to read in Italian then visit the Italian Gamesource site for their interview with Atanasov.

Both interviews are from Gamescom.

Earthrise - The Boneyard

by Myrthos, 18:46

In the fifth installment of the Earthrise dev journals at MMORPG a zone known as the Boneyard is described.

The Boneyard is situated too far off to be of any interest to anyone, save for a small group of scientists. They are considered to be a part of Noir, though they are so independent from the directives of command that their position is questionable. The primary occupation of this group is investigating and examining the oasis, where parts of the swarm were rumored to have remained alive despite their programming. Now that another Hatchery has emerged in the south, the scientists feel more burdened with worries about the future of humankind. They don't take interest in the political intrigues and the civil war, as they now see the threat of the new Hatchery as the most ominous problem on the horizon. The scientists seek to uncover the mysteries of the previous Hatchery infestation, believing the genetic history of the swarm is the key to its destruction.

Earthrise - Welcome to the Arboretum

by Myrthos, 20:58

This weeks Earthrise developers journal is about the small settlemet know as arboretum.

On the Northeast edge of the island of Enterra a small settlement named the Arboretum has been founded by a faction of settlers calling themselves "Nathura". As the name suggests, this is a nature-venerating society consisting primarily of scientists who refused to take sides in the ongoing conflict between Continoma and Noir; instead they chose to focus their knowledge and resources on the betterment of the last piece of inhabitable earth. Under the leadership of ex-Continoma Chief Geneticist Kiga, the people of the Arboretum have learned to be self-sufficient and to provide for themselves using only the natural resources that surround them. That leaves the settlement fairly independent from outside interests and allows Nathura to focus on taming the post-war mutated flora and fauna of the island and forming a peaceful and, even more important, symbiotic relationship between men and nature where both exist in perfect equilibrium and mutual benefit.

Earthrise - Interview & Dev Blog

by Myrthos, 22:21

In the weekly Earthrise developers blog at MMORPG The Hatchery is featured.

As the Final Wars came to a close, devastation was widespread and humanity on Earth was extinct. A small glimmer of hope to restore the human population lay dormant in the Librarium on Enterra island, but on the surface all other life forms were fighting for their survival. Largely thanks to the human created nano viruses, they went through drastic changes, evolving to survive, and created a fiercely adaptive and hostile ecosystem. As the environment worked to regenerate, another ecosystem had already begun taking on an even more alien form in the vast and deep oceans.

On the distant ocean floor, a new life form was developing in eternal darkness unlike any other on Earth. Easily mistaken for a new ecosystem of parasitic life forms by the human eye, a vast, colonial organism was forming. With its instinct to grow and ultimate adaptability, it became the single master of the depths where it originated in just a few short years.

An interview with Masthead's CEO Atanas Atanasov about teleportation, economy and territory control can be found at The Guilty Geek.

5. Teleportation appears to play an important role in getting around the game world. We understand that vehicles (customizable personal hovercraft) play a key role as well. Are there any other modes of transportation offered?

Teleportation will be available to players but it will not be as flexible and as cheap and accessible in the long run as owning a vehicle. Vehicles will demand maintenance and expenses, as well as feature different controls, but they will let you cross great distances in short time. Vehicles will not have combat functionality. Instead, players would be able to build mechanical exoskeletons that are armed to the teeth and take a big role in siege combat and conquest. Mechas will be harder to build and much more expensive to support.

Earthrise - The industrial Area

by Myrthos, 12:53

MMORPG has a developer journal with some lore about the industrial area in  Earthrise.

The Industrial Area was created as part of the major expansion plans of Continoma. Construction began during the first waves of the Resurrection as the Pioneers built the first installations from basic modules and metal scraps and endured hellish working conditions in their push for completion. Without their heroic efforts, the marvelous city of Sal Vitas or the immense projects of the Concession Territories would have been left on the drawing board forever.

During the next several decades, the Industrial Area grew bigger and the majority of the industrial production on Enterra was concentrated within this area. Riding a short wave of triumph, the technologists and operators soon learned of a massive scientific breakthrough that introduced the new industrial nanocultures - allowing the fast, effective, and clean production of industrial goods. The new nanofactories were created in regions close to the control of Continoma and the orders of goods produced in the old Industrial Area were stopped.

Earthrise - Interview @ Massively

by Myrthos, 12:22

Massively talked to Atanas Atanasov about their post-apocalyptic MMORPG Earthrise about some of the core concepts and lore behind Earthrise, and how their approach to the game and the genre should allow a great deal of freedom for players.

Will the world of Earthrise be divided solely between Continoma and Noir, or will there be other options for players to join or form sub-factions?

Continoma and Noir are the two largest Factions on the island of Enterra, but they are not the only two political organizations. Players will find out that the island of Enterra is home to many small, affiliated or independent organizations, each with their own agenda and goals. Completing missions for each of the organizations will allow players to use their reputations to gain access to special rewards and monopolized technologies that each organization guards for themselves.

Will the faction or alignment choices that players make individually, or collectively as guilds, affect the game world when they're dominant in Enterra and effectively tapping its resources? And will Earthrise be open enough to allow for flexible 'player politics' or will such interactions be tied into game mechanics?

In Earthrise, a player or group can choose to affiliate themselves with a particular faction, but being a sandbox world, it won't feel artificial to do so in order to accomplish your in game goals. While Continoma and Noir draw close to an all-out conflict, individual opportunism is taking place all over the island slowly shifting the focus towards complex individual player politics rather than bipolar propaganda that both Factions use to attract members on their side. That said, there's a large incentive for guilds to be close to Continoma or Noir in order to make most of the defense of their territories, but it will not require them to limit their guild politics in any way.

Earthrise - Interview @ TenTonHammer

by Myrthos, 23:34

Ten Ton Hammer explores together with Earthrise lead game developer Apostol Apostolov aspects of guilds, resource gathering and territory control.

Ten Ton Hammer: Will there be special crafting facilities that players will need access to in order to create items - specifically with Manufacturing, though this could apply to the Design process as well – or will the system allow for a certain amount of autonomy?

Apostol: Realistically, high-tech gadgets and equipment do not require facilities such as factories or construction terminals in order for crafters to turn construction parts into a usable item. Crafting won’t be autonomous or allowed just anywhere in the game world, although some field actions such as repair won’t require facilities (still, facilities will be an option that provides superior services). Players will have a wide choice of factories, each equipped with various production units required by technologies (a.k.a. crafting recipes). Crafters need to choose from all available Factories that support the type of item they want to create, and then plan which of those locations would give them the best chance to come up with superior production. A lot other choices are involved too such as security, logistical problems (distance, enemy territory, etc.).

Earthrise - Interview @ Earthrise HQ

by Myrthos, 23:20

German site Earthrise HQ have an interview up with  Masthead's CEO Atanas Atanasov about their post-apocalyptic MMO Earthrise.

For those not knowing what Earthrise is about this should give more information:

EarthriseHQ.de: We're happy to get some of your precious time and a third opportunity to ask you some questions about Earthrise. It would be nice if you could give us another short summary of Earthrise, Masthead Studios and about you for all the players who haven't heard about the project and your team.

Atanas Atanasov: Earthrise is an original post-apocalyptic, science-fiction MMORPG set in the not so far future where the world as we know it has destroyed itself through a devastating world war. A project called Continoma is established to preserve humanity on the Pacific island of Enterra, by saving human DNA and memories in a databank matrix. When the outside environment becomes habitable again, humanity is cloned back to life and those who emerge work to build a new society free from the mistakes of the past, gifted by all the high-technological advances of the past world.

But while some mistakes are indeed avoided, others are inevitably repeated. Pioneers face dreadful mutated flora and fauna that violently respond to their attempts of exploration. Cloning becomes mainstream to preserve the life of the survivors, but greedy of power, the project-gone-government Continoma is granted the god-like power to decide who is brought back to life and who is forever banished into the databanks. Continoma shifts to a totalitarian regime on its citizens, their worth measured by how much they contribute to the system.

After a coup against the head administrative council, a group of scientists bring the technology of cloning into the hands of a new-formed rebel group, known as Noir. Once independent of Continoma, Noir grows in power and influence in order to become a Faction. Tension grows between the two factions and a conflict looms close. In such difficult situations, players will enter Enterra as newly-cloned individuals, free to forge their fate in the world.

Earthrise - Interview @ QJ.net

by Myrthos, 12:55

An interview with Atanas Atanasov, CEO of Masthead who are developing the post-apocalyptic MMO Earthrise, is to be found on QJ.net.

Aren't you worried that Earthrise's level-less approach would alienate those more used to the traditional gameplay in games like WoW?

Lack of levels makes Earthrise a less predictable game and more challenging and ultimately exciting. Players' level of power is measured with flexible rating that takes into account their gear and abilities and it will be used to measure their survivability against their opponents. Unlike level-based games that either enforce rules that discourage attacking characters too weak or too powerful for your character, in Earthrise we implement a much smoother power curve that allows new players to have a chance against a veteran who isn't using his full combat potential. However, true power lays in the special abilities that the veterans have accumulated and allows them much more powerful and flexible combat tactics. Ultimately, this gives more freedom to the players and rewards skill and well-thought gameplay.

Since Earthrise has no levels, then it follows that there's no level cap. Is it possible to obtain all skills and tactics? Is there a sort of skill cap, as in a given player can only have a total of so-and-so skills?

It is possible to obtain all of the skills and tactics in Earthrise, but a player cannot use all of them at once in play. Most abilities are limited by the equipment worn and the wielded weaponry, as well as interface devices that allow weapons to utilize smart electronics available in the protective gear. The variety of learned abilities and tactics allows a character to be flexible - by changing his gear a character can gain access to new abilities that work best against a deadly opponent or in a specific situation.

Earthrise - Interview @ Eurogamer

by Woges, 14:43

Atanas Atanasov discusses various aspects of Earthrise.

Bulgarian developer Masthead Studios considers its PC MMO Earthrise to be different. The sci-fi setting is not space-based but rather post-apocalyptic, and there are no levels or pre-determined classes, but a free-form skill system. Quests and story have also been pushed to one side; more than half of the world will be given over to open player-versus-player combat and fierce, strategic wars for territory and resources. Being different makes all the difference - at least, that's what Masthead chief Atanas Atanasov told us when we sat down for a chat with him recently.

But we've heard this all before, and we've seen braggers like Tabula Rasa open and close in the blink of an eye. Can a newly-formed Bulgarian developer with no track record really hope to launch a subscription-based MMO and stand a chance against the Blizzards, CCPs, Turbines, Funcoms, NetDevils, and BioWares of the world? Atanasov believes he can when Earthrise (hopefully) launches later this year.

Earthrise - Beta Applications

by Woges, 13:46

Earthrise's Community Manager has post that apps for beta is open.

Now that we're gearing up beta talk with our most recent news on the application, let's get some common questions out of the way. Smiley

Where is the application?
http://www.play-earthrise.com/beta/betasignup.html

An important note:  Please fill out a valid email for your application, as we will be clarifying the method of how invitations are sent shortly. We don't want anyone to miss their beta invite, so having a valid email is a must.

What are these applications for?
At present, these applications are for Earthrise's beta, in all stages from closed, limited beta to open beta with wider access to the general public.

What is the first stage and when does it start?
Earthrise is starting with a closed, limited beta. This is slightly different than a friends and family beta and is available to a wider set of people. For those accustomed to MMO betas, people will be let into the beta in groups/waves of people. There will be a beta application period before it begins, though. We have to know who you are before we can get you playing!

Earthrise - Development Progress & Beta Update

by Asbjoern, 19:42

The latest newsletter from Masthead Studios writes about the progress of Earthrise's development and announces the era of closed, limited beta testing to begin by the end of this year:

How much longer until beta? What's the latest on beta? Where does Masthead stand in the development process? It is no secret that some of the most frequently asked questions from our community revolve around when Earthrise will enter beta. Well, in this month's newsletter we would like to give you an update on the development process and give you an idea of what to expect in the upcoming months.

In the last several months we have expanded our team at Masthead Studios to ensure that we can bring you the stellar game that you are all waiting for. Since our last update, our game designers have moved on from solely working on polishing the game design and are currently working on the character development paths, the skills, abilities and tactics and the combat system.

Last time our art team was working on the creatures of Earthrise and we are pleased to have been able to show you their progress and success with artwork from the last few months. Now the art team has moved their focus to Sal Vitas and the main character designs. Look forward to more art being released as we get closer to beta.

Our writing team spent a great deal of time earlier this year writing the extensive storyline to Earthrise and providing our community with some of the lore that you have already enjoyed. The team is currently filling their time working on the first set of quests for the game.

Also of interest, we are integrating a bunch of features and here is just a sample of what we are working on: the RPG system, PhysX, improved character control and collision detection, implemented game UI with complete functionality, performance and hardware information gathering, logs and reports.

As we move farther along in the development process, checking more and more off our list, it's hard to contain our excitement for what we feel will be an outstanding experience for players. Given the current development status, Earthrise should be ready for closed, limited beta testing by the end of this year.

Earthrise - Peek #3 @ RPG Vault

by Dhruin, 00:23

Peek #3 at RPG Vault continues to look at the backstory for Earthrise:

Despite Continoma's attempt to create a flawless city, imperfections continued to plague the citizens of Sal Vitas. During the last stages of the Third World War, a strain of nanite disassemblies was released by the government to ensure the eradication of all life on Enterra, but rather than destroying everything, it began to coexist with the flora and fauna robust enough to survive the ravages of the radioactive environment, acting as a catalyst to those species' rapid evolution, leaving nothing on the island unmutated.

Earthrise - Peek #2 @ RPG Vault

by Asbjoern, 13:59

It has been a while since we have last had a newsbit about Earthrise, but RPG Vault takes a peek into the lore of: "The survivors' initial forays into the post-apocalyptic world."
The article also shows an exclusive screenshot.

Continoma: The Rebirth

Hundreds of years after the sealing of the Continoma Project, the world began an unprecedented ecological regeneration. As the climate began to recover, the few areas spared from the rising oceans lay completely unpopulated, blank canvases to start a natural healing process. When data reports about the surface brought favorable survival odds, Continoma launched its unperfected cloning system to produce the initial group of Pioneers, the first humans meant to set foot on the island of Enterra since the Third World War.

Continoma's greatest achievement would soon become its greatest failure as new breeds of citizens would find themselves parts of a vision they no longer shared, and without any personal benefits at all.
In their initial exploration of the devastated area, the pioneers lost a number of members to aggressive animal species altered by fallout. In the ensuing fight for territory, their technological advantage eventually allowed them to push the mutants back enough to claim the land for their own developments. These first steps paved the way for sprawling industrial areas and a vast network of smaller settlements that evolved into what was known as The Nest, the first community in the new era of man. It provided a safe haven as Continoma planned and prepared the construction of its true return to power and wealth, the city of Sal Vitas, future home to a great utopian society that would be free of past errors.

Earthrise - Q&A @ Warcry

by Woges, 22:38

Warcry have a Q&A piece with Masthead's CEO Atanas Atanasov.

WarCry: What will gameplay be like? How will the average player spend his time in Earthrise?

AA: Earthrise is a skill-based PvP sandbox MMO featuring sophisticated crafting and player controlled territory. An average player can do a lot of things in the game starting from character development through PvE and questing, going through PvP fights with single enemies, Guild vs Guild or the epic territory conquest. Those players who don't want to engage in PvE or PvP fights will find the crafting, trading and social advancement an excellent way of spending their time while online.

WarCry: What is the skill system like? Will there be a lot of grinding, or is the progression fast?

AA: Earthrise will feature a large amount of skills with a wide range of active and passive abilities, further customizable with Tactics that enhance their effects in new directions, allowing players to customize their arsenal of skills to their liking. The game will require players to take on quests and kill many mutated species, regenerate robots or bandits across the island of Enterra in order to advance their skills, but the progression won't require too much of them. In fact, if players want to develop only a small group of highly specialized skills, they can reach expertise fairly quickly, and within a couple months they would be ready to match with the end content, but if they prefer variety and customization that guarantees their survival in many situations, they will have to spend considerably more time on honing their skills in-game. However, player skill remains the most important of them all - both in achieving the best suited build for their taste and how to actually play it well.

Earthrise - More Music Tracks @ MMORPG

by Woges, 16:18

MMORPG have another 2 tracks from the in development MMORPG.

And I Shall Remain

The cataclysms of the Third World War have left cities in ruin, filled only with death and despair. Those brave enough to inhabit these areas can sense the ghosts of the men and women lost; their ghost-voices calling to them in the dry winds. Amidst the devastation, the old cities hide unknown treasures and secrets that may prove to be deadly traps for explorers. The weathered streets of these perilous cities have become battlegrounds for short, but fierce, clashes between government loyalists and rebel forces.

You can download the song here.

Shifts and Tides

The island of Enterra is dense with the remains of a lost civilization. The landscape is dominated with ruined structures and fallen monuments of ancient technology. Memories of the long-dead humanity live only through tales conjured in the imagination of venturous travelers and explorers; an evidence of the ever-shifting tides of fate, invoking uncertainty in their own future...

Earthrise - Preview @ WarCry

by Asbjoern, 22:17

A two-page preview of Earthrise has been published at WarCry:

They prefer the open skill system - where any one character can use any skill in the game rather than being limited by a class - because it allows players to experience the game and its story from different angles. For example, in WoW, a player really only has one incentive to do a quest: the reward. The experience itself is the same each time. In Earthrise, players could theoretically run through the story in different class roles, which increases replayability.

As fans of Ultima will remember though, an open skill system can create chaos where players are just too powerful. Theoretically, Earthrise allows a single player to master every single skill in the game simultaneously. They'll prevent "tank-mage" syndrome through equipment. The equipment players wear limits their ability to use other skills, this means that if a player is wearing heavy assault armor, they likely cannot also use the technological skills that stand in for magic in the game.

Earthrise - Interview @ MPOGD.com

by Asbjoern, 15:14

CEO of Masthead Studios, Atanas Atanasov, has been interviewed by MPOGD.com about their upcoming title, Earthrise. The interview revolves heavily around Earthrise's use of PvP combat. Beta plans are mentioned at the end of the interview.

Mark: Are there going to be closed and open beta stages? Do you have any rough timelines in place for beta phases?

A.A: Yes, we are planning for closed beta, starting this summer and open beta just before release date. Closed beta will have several stages. I know how it feels to wait such a long time to get the beta invite, but I would like to ask our community for patience. The most important thing for us is to stick to our promises and deliver the game on time.
