Arena - Open TESArena 0.70

by Silver, 07:09

OpenTESArena is an engine re-implementation for The Elder Scrolls: Arena which is currently at version 0.70.

loading...

OpenTESArena is an open-source engine re-implementation for "The Elder Scrolls: Arena" by Bethesda Softworks. It aims to be a modern replacement for the 1994 engine with native support for Windows, Linux, and macOS.

There is no actual gameplay yet, but this release adds new features such as city generation, dungeon generation, fast traveling, and province map searching. Wilderness generation is in its early stages.

Only the floppy disk version from the Bethesda website is currently compatible, and the CD version (i.e., from GOG) should be supported sometime in the future.

Arena - The Evolution of The Elder Scrolls @ PC Gamer

by Hiddenx, 23:16

Jody Macgregor (PC Gamer) tells the history/evolution of the Elder Scrolls series:

The evolution of The Elder Scrolls

There’s a theory that no one ever loves one of Bethesda’s open-world games as much as they love their first. Whichever of the Elder Scrolls games was your introduction to the format will be the one that sticks with you forever, the theory goes, and none of the others will measure up. But although there certainly is a format shared by all the single-player RPGs in the Elder Scrolls series, there isn’t a formula–each new game makes significant changes, and many of those changes seem like responses to common criticisms of the previous one. It feels like Bethesda pays attention to the things people complain about and use mods to fix, though the company rarely gets credit for it. It’s especially noticeable when you put all five central games in the series—ignoring the spin-offs—side by side to see how they’ve evolved, and how different they are. We'll follow that path now, starting with The Elder Scrolls: Arena. [...]

Elder Scrolls 1: Arena - Retrospective Review @ RPG Codex

by Hiddenx, 10:20

RPG Codex member Deuce Traveler posted an interesting retrospective review of the first game in the Elder Scrolls series from 1994: Arena.

I had originally never intended to play The Elder Scrolls: Arena, as I'd heard enough about this imperfect creation from other RPG fans to keep me away from it. It was said that the game is unbalanced. That it feels incomplete. That its main quest and characters are shallow when compared with that of contemporary RPGs such as the Ultima games or Betrayal at Krondor. But in the end, I decided to give the game a go as part of a larger project I am working on, in order to ascertain these facts for myself. What I found was a game that is indeed quite unbalanced, with many gameplay elements that feel rushed and incomplete, and a main story arc filled with cliche fantasy tropes. And yet, the game was a total joy to play, like a B-movie that manages to be greater than the sum of its faults.

RPGWatch Feature - Elder Scrolls: Arena Retrospective

by Dhruin, 22:41

It was 1994 that a young Bethsoft released The Elder Scrolls: Arena, creating one of the longest running franchises in PC gaming history and arguably going from strength to strength.  Corwin takes a look back in this Retrospective:

The first thing I noticed, was how much the game reminded me of Ultima Underworld - it looks and plays very much like that classic. It’s first person, 3D and you have to swing your mouse to swing your sword. In many ways, despite the vast improvements in the quality of the graphics, the combat mechanics haven’t changed very much over the years. The spell effects are quite mundane by today’s standards, but they do the job. The game does contain one spell which sadly never resurfaced- Passwall. It’s marvellous being able to make any dungeon wall simply disappear.
