Sonic RPG - Interview #2 @ Gamasutra

by Dhruin, 02:11

Gamasutra has spoken with Sonic project lead Mark Darrah about BioWare's first handheld project and mixing a Japanese with western RPG design:

The motto of BioWare is "The best story-based games." Sonic has been ridiculed recently for both the way its story has been going, and overall as a series. How do you loop that back?

MD: The interesting thing is that Sonic, when you start digging into the IP, is an immensely well-developed IP. There are comics, there are cartoons, and there is all this back-history that's been laid out. So there was an amazing amount for us to draw upon, and refer to, and pay homage to as we made the story.

I mean, I think the big thing is, we're making a storytelling game, while for most of the Sonic titles - Sonic Rush, for example - the story has to be injected between the levels, so it limits how they can tell story.

Sonic RPG - Debut Trailer Released

by Txa1265, 11:39

The debut trailer for Sonic's first foray into handheld gaming has been released.  Check it out here at GameVideos.

Sega has released the first trailer for its turn-based RPG, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Developed by Bioware, the Nintendo DS game shows promise. The publisher obviously spared no expense in the voice-over department as the "movie voice guy" talks all dramatic-like through the trailer. Sonic Chronicles is expected to be one part of the Sega mascot's reboot this fall.

Sonic RPG - Official Blog

by Dhruin, 22:54

BioWare's Randall Bishop has kicked up a blog entry for Sega on Sonic Chronicles, titled 5 Reasons Why Working on Sonic Chronicles is Fun:

3. The game is amazing - Probably the coolest part of my job is that I often get to play the game in order to capture screenshots and videos.  Let me switch gears for a second and not speak as a marketer, but as a gamer…  Sonic Chronicles is great!  For example: Burning around the map as Sonic while being chased by monsters, only to escape by flying across chasms as Rouge the bat is a blast.  Also, exploring the maps to collect all the Chao eggs is pretty rewarding.  Especially once the eggs hatch and you get to bring those Chao into battle with you and use their powers against your enemies.  The combat is also really engaging since you can unlock devastating power moves by having the right combination of characters in your party.  I also enjoy customizing the characters in my party so they fit my play style.

Sonic RPG - Hands-On @ Kotaku

by Dhruin, 00:52

We won't be covering this one in full depth but this hands-on for BioWare's Sonic handheld game at Kotaku might be worth a look:

The game is almost entirely stylus controlled, with Sonic (or whomever you're playing) following touchscreen taps and drags. Context sensitive pop-up actions will appear at certain points, letting the player enter doors, sprint through corkscrews or cross gaps. Some are character or ability specific, requiring the use of a flying Rouge the Bat, for example.

In battle, fights with angry woodsy creatures will require a knowledge of turn-based RPG tactics. Your quartet of fighters will load out with a series of special attacks that depends on who is in your current party. Tag-team moves may require both Sonic and Amy, with some special attacks that can only be done via threesome.
