Pillars of Eternity - New Beta Patch Released

Brian Adler of Obsidian posted information about a new Backer Beta patch.

Hey, everyone. The latest Backer Beta update is now live. We hope you enjoy. I have included some patch notes.

Thanks for all of the help in testing the game and providing useful feedback.

Talents and Core Abilities

Over a hundred Talents have been added to allow more options for class customization during the level up process. We've adjusted how the core class abilities are granted to allow for more flexibility within each class.

Revised Skill Progression

You can no longer spend points to upgrade skills during level up. All skill advancement is now done through Talents, and thematically grouped Talents will award additional skill points if chosen during level up. Your background choice during character creation will also reward additional skill points.

Fog Of War

The Fog of War has been upgraded to obey the sight visibility for the party members. No more cheating by looking over walls and closed doors in dungeons!

Experience Points

We decided to add a few more ways to gain experience points to increase the regularity that XP is rewarded throughout the game. We've added minor bestiary, exploration, lock, and trap XP rewards. Bestiary XP is rewarded when new entries are unlocked in the Bestiary page in the Journal, and will stop being rewarded if the entry is complete. Exploration XP is given out when new areas and landmarks are discovered in the world.

Glossary

An in game glossary has been added with explanation and definitions of game and combat rules. These entries are hyperlinked so you can easily find information on what you are looking for. You can click directly on keywords in the combat log, or open up the Journal's Glossary page.

Hotkeys

Hotkeys can be assigned to any ability on the hot bar and additionally be access through a quick hotkey menu. We still intend to revise how this system works, but please provide feedback if you like or dislike our direction.

EDIT: I forgot to add that the Mac build is now available for download from Steam! The Linux build still has a problem with loading and unloading asset bundles. Unity knows about the issue and we will release the Linux build once they post a fix. Thanks for the patience.

RPG Nuke interviewed Colin McComb about Torment: Tides of Numenera.

RPGNuke: Hi Colin! Let's start with some Tides of Numenera questions. A one and a half years passed since the end of kickstarter campaign. What is the status of the project now? Where there many changes to the initially planned? Did you have to cut anything out or did you manage to add anything new? As far as I know the pre-production phase now comes to its end and the prodution phase starts, how does this transition occur?

Colin: We are shifting from limited production to production. What limited production means is that we were creating content for the game, but not at the speed that we might expect during a full production period. Rather, it’s in ways that prove out our ideas and concepts, or that show where the weaknesses in our pipeline are, or that help build the best processes for the whole team.

As to whether we had to cut anything: We have! But that’s natural for any project as we assess scope and our desired impact. We’ve tightened up the story in some places, expanded it in others, and tried to make sure that we are focused exactly on delivering what we’ve promised to our backers. We’ve also managed to expand areas that were smaller in the original vision, and I’m happy with where we are as a result of our discussions.

The transition from Wasteland 2 to Torment is happening slowly and carefully under Kevin’s supervision. He wants to make sure that the newer members of the team are done with their responsibilities on Wasteland 2, or at least done enough that they can begin to devote serious attention to our project. They’ll start by getting familiar with our tools and our processes, and they can point out places where our processes and documentation need improvement. As more and more of them come over, and as people ramp up on the project, we’ll see a faster pace for production and creation of all our assets.

Dreamlords Digital's posted the next update for Graywalkers: Purgatory with news on the various races in the game. The game still needs $12,000 to get funded.

We're now at 67% and we still have 10 Days to go. Thank you to those who have increased their pledges and started getting some of the Add-Ons. Your support has been much appreciated. For the backers who have just joined us, Welcome to the Graywalkers to all of you.

As you all know we're closing in our deadline. We really need everybody to start rallying and continue to spread the word around more passionately. SW:TOR - Shadow of Revan Details

Swtor Strategies posted new information about the Shadow of Revan Expansion.

Massively, Hyperspace beacon, MMORPG and Ten Ton Hammer were treated to a unique opportunity by Bioware recently. During a livestream, lead writer Charles Boyd, producer Bruce MacLean and Game director James Ohlen shared more information about what’s coming to the latest SWToR expansion.

Some of the highlights included:

  • There will be a Patch 4.0 – there are more stories to be told (and probably more expansions in 2015)
  • SWToR development is speeding up – expect to see more exciting announcements after the release of Shadow of Revan
  • Patch 3.0 might expand to other locations other than Yavin IV and Rishi
  • Togruta will be the next playable race and will be a Cartel Market item
  • Solo flashpoints confirmed – A droid companion will be available to carry players through tough fights
  • Class missions return – you can now play your unique class mission story

Diablo 3 - The Ultimate Pavlovian Mechanism

Indy Zoeller of Unreality Mag posted a new article for Diablo 3 that calls the game,"The Ultimate Pavlovian Mechanism". Here is a sample to get you all started.

I was a little hesitant to pick up Diablo III for my console – I’d played the first two games on a PC, and I had trouble seeing how some of the finer points of using skills would transfer over – but it turned out to be loads of fun.  Great interface, good pace, really fun skill progression/modification/customization.

Of course I was aware of the slightly insane logic of games like this: fight monsters that drop items that make your character more powerful, so you can fight harder monsters that drop better items that make your character even more powerful, so you can… fight harder monsters.  I’m sure there’s a word for it.  Pretty much any inventory-based RPG has this mechanic working to some extent.  And it’s certainly not a problem on its own – after all, with games like this, it’s about the journey, not the destination.

But the more I played Diablo III, the more I was slightly disturbed at how incredibly slick it all felt.  From the visible experience bar (just a liiiiiitle further) and the way your character lights up when you make a Paragon level, to the aesthetically pleasing orange column of light and special, unique sound that plays when a legendary item drops, the more I played, the more I felt like the game was playing me.

I received news today about new game that is soon to released on Steam called Mythos: The Beginning from a developer named Dark Gaia Studios.

Mythos: The Beginning is a survival horror/adventure role playing game based on the pulp-horror and monster movies of the 1930s. Set in London in 1934, Mythos tasks you with creating your own paranormal investigator from scratch and guiding them through a frightening exploration of the infamous Harborough Asylum. WoW - New Australian Servers & FAQ

Well if you live in Australian and still play World of Warcraft thew following information is good news. It seems Blizzard will launch new servers, and posted a new FAQ.

We are pleased to announce that the upcoming deployment of Australian World of Warcraft game servers ahead of the games next expansion, Warlords of Draenor. This new infrastructure will support Australia and New Zealand and should provide a significant smoother gameplay experience for players in the region.

Players currently on an Oceanic realm—Barthilas, Frostmourne, Thaurissan, Saurfang, Caelestrasz, Jubei'Thos, Khaz'goroth, Aman'Thul, Nagrand, Dath'Remar, Dreadmaul, and Gundrak—should automatically experience improved latency once the new game servers go live. To help those currently adventuring on North American realms, such as Blackrock and Proudmoore, optional free character and guild master realm transfers will be offered for a limited time.

Shroud of the Avatar - Release 11 Instructions

Portalarium has posted the Release 11 Instructions on the Shroud of the Avatar website.

We are moving full steam ahead (oh yes, I went there) towards our Steam Early Access launch on November 24. We were nervous at first about moving to Steam, but are feeling great now based on the overwhelmingly positive and speedy results of our Steam Greenlight campaign, and the incredible support Steam has been giving us. With that said, we need this launch to be super smooth. So we need your help in R11 to play the game through Steam if you are willing. As a reminder Steam is optional for playing Shroud. You can still play without using Steam.

We have lots of new content for you to play with (over a hundred!), and some major changes, including the addition of advancement (finally a sense of progress through gameplay), modifications to combat systems (movement penalties, sprinting, encumbrance, durability, etc.), crafting (cooking, repair, alchemy), and a major change to how wilderness scenes work on the Overworld map (see below for more details).

Mario Mihokovic the CEO of Little Green Men Game posted a new Post-Mortem update on gamasutra about the development , and Steam Early Access for Starpoint Gemini 2.

Our Early Access development story started about a year ago. In September 2013, Starpoint Gemini 2 was already advanced in development by quite a few steps… At that time Early Access was rather new with very few games in the program. When we were offered to jump into it we were scared to death of the very idea. It did sound interesting though, like a modified Kickstarter campaign, but... as we saw in following months, Early Access turned out to be a completely different experience than we could have ever imagined.

It gave the development of Starpoint Gemini 2 a whole new meaning and with it a bigger level of involvement with and from our community. That said, we have to say that Early Access surprised us in a very positive way! The last 12 months were the most intense and craziest in our history as a team and has shaped Starpoint Gemini 2 into what it is today. If you are ready to jump into this "mad" experience, we certainly recommend it. We'd like to share some prominent experiences from our Early Access time...

Age of Wonders 3 - Development Updates

Well since my  last post about Age of Wonders III Triumph Studios has released two more updates on the games website. The first update is about Cities of the Dead.

Here is the next update on the Necromancer Class Design, thanks everybody for the feedback. Here is some of our progress that hopefully answers some of your questions and may be it incorporates some feedback here and there. There are many aspects to this class, but we’ll start at the root which are the mechanics for Undead towns and transformed undead races.

The second update is about is a followup to the one above about Necromancer Units.

Today we take a look at the conceptual designs for first Necromancer Units.  As we posted in our last dev journal, the Necromancer can turn many types of living units into Ghoul variants using the Great Transformation spell, but of course, the Necromancer comes with its own unique unit roster.  Today we’re going to take a look at the first lower tier Necromancer units.

Xenonauts - Review @ GameBanshee

GameBanshee's Steven Carter is back with a new review this time for Xenonauts.

Overall, I think Xenonauts gets enough things right to be worthwhile.  It isn't as slick as the recent XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but it has some old school charm, and it's about as close as you can come to playing X-Com: UFO Defense with a modern interface.  Plus, no sooner had I finished playing than I saw that Goldhawk Interactive was close to releasing their final patch for the game, which looks as though it will fix many of the things I didn't like about it (such as the wonky line-of-sight system).  So if you like tactical strategy games in general and X-Com games in particular, then Xenonauts is a reasonable purchase at its $25 price tag.

Blue Bottle Games has released a new build for Neo Scavenger. I know the developer posts a bunch of updates every week, but this one is about end game content.

That's right you can now finish the games campaign. Here the list of changes,

The major changes to watch out for include:

  • New faction.
  • New "Enervated" flaw.

ThinkProgress - Felicia Day Targeted

Actress Felicia Day announced her fears about GamerGate and safety issues for women gamers, and had her private details released online afterwards.

“I have been terrified of inviting a deluge of abusive and condescending tweets into my timeline. I did one simple @ reply to one of the main victims several weeks back, and got a flood of things I simply couldn’t stand to read directed at me. I had to log offline for a few days until it went away. I have tried to re-tweet a few of the articles I’ve seen dissecting the issue in support, but personally I am terrified to be doxxed (having personal information such as an address, email or real name released online) for even typing the words ‘Gamer Gate.’”

In fact, Day was reportedly doxxed within an hour of writing her post on GamerGate. The immediate doxxing of female GamerGate critics, including Day, has been pointed to as an example of the sexism of the movement. Former NFL player Chris Kluwe, who wrote his own post calling GamerGaters “basement-dwelling, cheetos-huffing, poopsock-sniffing douchepistols,” said Day was only targeted because of her gender.

“None of you fucking #gamergate tools tried to dox me, even after I tore you a new one. I’m not even a tough target…Instead, you go after a woman who wrote why your movement concerns her,” Kluwe said on Twitter.

Dragon Age: Inquisition - News Roundup

I found some more news this week for Dragon Age: Inquisition. So to get started here is a new preview from EGMR about the game being better than Destiny.

Dragon Age: Inquisition could well be BioWare’s apology letter for the failings of Dragon Age II and even Mass Effect 3; it looks like a strong and solid offering thus far and is honestly the only (read: the only) game that I’ve looked forward to this year. The only one. That might be because I’m a fan of BioWare games but surely there’s reason for that given how much I get accused of being tough on everything else… right? Maybe they’re a great series of games or something? Time will tell and very soon we’ll see if Inquisition stands up to the test.

Next GameranX has a new character creation miniguide from Bioware.

Bioware has shared a new Dragon Age 3: Inquisition character creation chart. It describes what you get from choosing a particular race and class.

And if you live in the US the ESRB has rated the game M-rated.

Rating Summary: This is a role-playing game in which players assume the role of a warrior battling evil forces in different dimensions. Characters use swords, axes, hammers, and magic attacks to kill fantastical creatures (e.g., demons, monsters, dwarfs) and humans in melee-style combat. Cutscenes sometimes depict characters impaled or getting their throats slit. Violent sequences are often highlighted by cries of pain, gurgling/gushing sounds, and large blood-splatter effects; blood remains on the ground in several environments. The game includes some sexual material: a female character briefly depicted in front of a man's torso (fellatio is implied); characters depicted topless or with exposed buttocks while lying in bed or after sex; some dialogue referencing sex/sexuality (e.g., “'I will bring myself sexual pleasure later, while thinking about this with great respect'” and “The way your t*ts bounce when I pin your arms and take you on the side of the bed…”). The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “a*shole” appear in dialogue.

Everstar - The World of Everstar

Psycho Sorted posted the second update for Everstar with more information on the gam world. Funding is still going slow, but still has time to pick up.

Everstar is set in a unique fantasy world where monsters are rumored to stalk the nights while nations clash with steel and thunder and the fate of the known world depends on a few students and their teachers.

Most of our game happens in the Morningstar Academus, a school where students learn how to do battle with weapons mundane and magical.

The school’s royal charter is to educate the best and the brightest to a new standard of military-oriented excellence. Children from families of means low and high are recruited based on academic or physical potential and trained by the finest scholars and military minds in the nation. One major difference between the Academus and other schools in that it allows children to pursue the martial studies according to their interests.

The pinnacle of all this training is the Sparcross Games, the most celebrated events of the school. These games are sports events where student teams battle each other, competing to win the Tourney Cup.

GamesIndustry.biz posted a new interview with Unity's EX-CEO Helgason about his history of making the game engine, and the joining of John Riccitiello as the new CEO.

In the press, we call this "a megaton." The sort of story that breaks just a handful of times a year, one that grabs the attention and prompts immediate discussion.

Over the past decade, Unity Technologies has grown from a Danish startup with the high-minded goal of democratising development, to one of the most influential companies in the ever-changing landscape of the games industry. Through it all, David Helgason has been the company's public face, and while he might continue serve that purpose, he won't continue to be its CEO.

That responsibility now rests on the shoulders of John Riccitiello, someone best known for his time at the head of EA, the kind of monolithic company that Unity was founded to oppose. In this interview, Helgason talks about why Riccitiello is the best possible fit for the role, and offers some reassurance that his own time at Unity is far from over.

Graywalkers - Rewards & Renders

Dreamlords Digital's posted the fourteenth update for Graywalkers: Purgatory with information about new game rewards, and shares a few new game renders.

3D Model Render

Everybody knows that the game is still in pre-alpha. Luckily, many have loved the demo with regards to gameplay. With regards to the graphics, some people like it already, and some feel there is still room to improve. We've said that the characters in the game will be changed and to give an idea to what level of quality that change will be, we would like to share a render image of the 3d model for Father Ruben. The sample below is still a work in progress as many of the details are not yet final: such as weapons, accessories and texture finishes. However, we believe you guys will be happy with what we have in store. 

We're very confident that what you see now will even be further improved when we move forward with the development after the Kickstarter. 

REWARDS

We also have some rewards-related changes to further entice everybody to pledge more. As you can see on our page, we have a lot of Add-ons (both digital and physical). Unfortunately, not too many people have been availing themselves of them. We're thinking that price might be an issue so we've decided to lower the price on those we can afford to lower, just to make them more affordable. We have also included new Add-ons that people have been requesting, particularly the In-Game Starter Packs. We now have a price for them as well.

With regards to delivery of Rewards, most of those that are not dependent on the final finished game to fulfill might be delivered as early as within the 1st quarter of 2015. We're targeting to have those rewards available by GDC 2015 (ex. t-shirts, jackets, bags, etc)

Wasteland 2 - Review @ Hardcore Games

Hardcore Games Al Jackson played Wasteland 2, and posted a new review sharing his thoughts on the game. He gave the game a final score of 96/100.

Some have suggested that Wasteland 2 is a game for another era. And the jury is still out I think on whether or not the hardcore PC game revival sparked by Kickstarter will meet with meaningful success. The big hope, of course, is that a large pool of mainstream players will respond positively to WL2 and the handful of other like-minded new and upcoming releases, so that maybe in the next few years we’ll see hosts of new games that are as deep, complex and satisfying as Wasteland 2. That would be something because this a great video game across the board. By creating a comprehensively interactive gameworld, a compelling tactical combat system, as well as a narrative that not only engages via solid storytelling, but also by making player agency a driving force in its narrative, InXile has created what is one of the finest and most engaging RPGs of this year, or any other for that matter.

The Mandate - Post-Funding Update #43

The next post-funding update for The Mandate has more information from Perihelion Interactive about character progression, skills and traits.

The previous update outlined a schedule for the next few updates and today would have been about space combat (update #43). However, we decided to wait a bit with that update and instead dig a bit deeper into the boarding operations. Update #44 which will talk about progress/schedule is on track for the second half of November and the space combat update may arrive either before or after that one.

For this update we will start by talking about character progression, skills and traits. Next we will cover veterancy and how this is important and affects the performance of your marines and pilots in particular. As part of this we will also revisit the battle drills and formations.

Pier Solar - Review @ Snackbar Games

Snackbar Games has the second review that I have found this month for Pier Solar, and they award the game with final score of 3/5.

Pier Solar and the Great Architects is a fun title that serves its purpose well, taking the player back in time to a time when RPGs were king. Whether or not this journey is worth taking depends a lot on how much time and patience you have. The core of the game is brilliant, but unfortunately this core is wrapped with a layer of tedium and frustration that is almost inexcusable from a modern standpoint.
