Underrail - Interview Questions Wanted

by Couchpotato

As promised my next interview will be with Styg about his Indie RPG game Underrail. You now have the chance to submit any questions you want answered along with mine.

Underrail is an old school turn-based isometric indie role playing game that focuses on exploration and combat.

The game is set in a distant future, when the life on the Earth’s surface has long since been made impossible and the remnants of humanity now dwell in the Underrail, a vast system of metro station-states that, it seems, are the last bastions of a fading race.

The player takes control of one of the denizens of such a station-state whose life is about to become all that much more interesting and dangerous, as our protagonist is caught midst the conflicting factions of the Underrail as the violently struggle to survive in the harsh underground environment.

The deadline will be next week from now on the 24th.

Torment: Tides of Numenera - A New Look

by Couchpotato, 02:39

InXile entertainment has more information in the latest kickstarter update about the new look for the Torment: Tides of Numenera website I posted about yesterday.

Updated our Journal (32): A New Look

TL;DR: website re-launched – please confirm your pledge and any add-ons, Endless Battle lore, ask Torment developers.

Thomas here! As Wasteland 2 is getting close to release and Torment: Tides of Numenera closer to full-scale production, we're excited to announce the official relaunch of the Torment website and backer system with an overhauled functionality. The new site is largely the work of Jason Dora, one of the Torment backers, who answered our call for a web developer in Update 29, and has since joined inXile full time.

Torment's New Website

The key functionality of the new site that will interest you is that you can now declare your add-ons. In fact, if you intended for Wasteland 2 to be among your add-ons, then just login and tell us when you're ready to get your Wasteland 2 key. Wasteland 2’s commercial launch is Friday, September 19. You can specify Wasteland 2 add-ons now by visiting the reward page and adding Wasteland 2 to your selected rewards. Keys will be made available before release.

More generally, the new backer system means you will now be able to manage your pledge in great detail. We have changed our system into one that tracks your contributions as inXile Points (XP or just Points). The more Points you have, the higher your Level within our system; the higher your Level, the more possible Rewards are available that you can buy with Points. As an existing backer, you will start with 100 Points for every $1 you donated, with your reward choice matched to the one closest to your total pledge. That is, each $.01 USD = 1 Point.

This may sound a little daunting at first but it does not impact the value or rewards of your pledge in any way. You will get the rewards that you pledged for during the Kickstarter campaign; the value of your pledge is unchanged.

Square Collective - War of Zodiarcs

by Couchpotato, 02:34

There's a new game on the Square Collective called War of Zodiarcs looking for votes to get Squaresoft's support for a new Indiegogo campaign. Here are the details.

What is War of Zodiarcs?

War of Zodiarcs is a classic Tactical JRPG that mixes traditional tactical gameplay with the thrill of cards and dice. Follow the journey of a young hero who must lead his party into the heart of an enemy nation and learn that sometimes the burden of becoming the man everyone expects, can be too much to bear.

A game that blends Tactical JRPG, cards, and dice to create an exciting new gaming experience that requires tactical, minute-to-minute planning in every battle. Planned release for PC, console, and handheld gaming devices (PSVita & N3DS).

Why Tactical?

War of Zodiarcs is inspired by our love of tactical games like Shining Force and Final Fantasy Tactics, where you were required to think and plan ahead as your small group takes on a superiorly numbered force. In War of Zodiarcs, you determine your angle of attack, position your units, and take out your enemies in your march towards victory.
Why Cards and Dice?

We want to capture the experience of boardgames with War of Zodiarcs. Specifically, the experience of drawing cards and rolling dice. That emotional rollercoaster where you’re filled with anticipation and tension as you prepare to flip the card or throw the dice, and then fist-pump in success when you get the result you want! Or that pleasant surprise when you get something you didn’t expect but realize it opens up a whole new tactical approach that you didn’t see before...

Why JRPG?

We love JRPGs. They are what truly got us into gaming in the first place. With War of Zodiarcs, we want to stay true to what we love about JRPGs. Namely, the deep narrative with a large cast of complex and flawed characters that engage you on an emotional level, all taking place within a colorful and lore-filled world. War of Zodiarcs is a “coming of age” story that captures the hardship of growing up. Becoming an adult is not as simple as time passing; it's about responsibility, suffering, and personal sacrifice, and we want to tell that tale in War of Zodiarcs.

Graal Seeker - Indiegogo Campaign Launched

by Couchpotato, 02:16

The Indiegogo Campaign for Graal Seeker was launched today, and the games developer Lugludum is asking for €10,000 in the next thirty days.

What is Graal Seeker?

Graal Seeker is a 2D game that blends RPG with roguelike mechanics and real-time tactical battles. It recreates the initiatory journey of a knight seeking the Holy Grail in fifth century Britain.

Features

  • Unique stories inspired by the Matter of Britain.
  • Find your Graal based on the choices you make.
  • Narrative game inspired by the Choose Your Own Adventure book.
  • Fast tactical battles. Prove your combat skills in real time.
  • Procedurally generated events and maps. You always will have different opportunities to prove your courage.
  • Permadeath and persistent world.
  • Moddability. Create and share your own Graal stories.

What is the Graal?

The Graal (or Holy Grail), the subject of myths and legends, can take several forms depending on the tradition: a chalice, a cauldron, or even an emerald. All covet it for its famed magical powers. But what is it really?

In Graal Seeker, you are an adventurer from the fifth century seeking this relic for fame, fortune, or faith. You can also join Arthur's court in his fight against the Saxons and spread justice throughout the land. But is the recent Saxon invasion related to the presence of the Holy Graal on British soil, or is it merely an excuse for territorial conquest?

From Celtic origins to Christian and esoteric texts, the quest for the Graal has inspired seekers for centuries. Graal Seeker provides a truly initiatory and introspective quest that evolves with your choices and experience. So it is the player who makes the story!

Fable 3 - Retrospective @ Continue Play

by Couchpotato, 01:51

Continue Play posted a new retrospective for Fable III, and in the end is disappointed.

Perhaps I’m being too hard on Fable 3. It’s nevertheless a fun romp and it looks very nice. The design is a great blend of Lionhead’s general cartoonishness, there’s a lot of small, funny stories that are still there, and it’s evolved in its aesthetics from Fable 2. The world is still well designed, moving you from place to place at a good, comfortable piece. It moves the player from a variety of environments that range from generic to breathtaking.

A few of its story beats are still excellent: I’ve never had as much fun in a videogame as I have playing the quest The Game in Fable 3. A testament to Lionhead’s creative skill, the quest is a vivid juxtaposition between fictional Albion and the fourth wall it snidely challenges.

The Demon Doors remain excellent: they’re windows to other, strange dimensions. It suggests an Albion more complex than the one our characters manipulate.

The voice acting is stellar as ever. The music is soft, never-imposing, never in-your-face. Lushness defines its aesthetics, and it works.

But this is all window-dressing. These are all nice things built upon a simplistic, broken foundation. At the heart of it, this Albion is too easy, too gullible, too simple. It throws out this terrible calamity, but there’s no child’s moment in what it otherwise, quite starkly, an emperor’s new clothes. This Albion plays it straight; the procession continues.

And unfortunately, it’s an Albion I leave behind with disappointment.

Frayed Knights 2 - Somebody Set Up Us the Bomb

by Couchpotato, 01:39

The Rampant Coyote has a new post on his website about his next RPG game Frayed Knights 2, and goes into detail about how grenades work n the game.

In Frayed Knights 1: The Skull of S’makh-Daon, I established the existence of alchemical grenades. They made the hobgoblins a lot more deadly, but they could also found and used by players, or manufactured by a certain alchemist.

A certain twisted, evil, black-hearted part of me really liked the idea. But then, I’m a guy who has my D&D characters stock up on Alchemist’s Fire all the way up to level 7 or so for fun and burning. It’s so useful for cleaning out those hard-to-reach monsters. So, in Frayed Knights 2: The Khan of Wrath, I kinda … expanded on the idea. Especially since spells have become so random.

In Frayed Knights 2, you have “shots” (as in “shot-put”) and “bombs.” Shots are single-target throwable items, and bombs affect a group. They can be used by anyone, although those with higher throwing skills will have an advantage. They serve a number of purposes:

  1. They provide access to baseline attacks of different types to attack enemy weaknesses. So if you encounter a fire-based enemy that is vulnerable to cold, even if you have no cold-based spells, you are likely (unless you’ve used them all up) to have at least a couple of cold-based bombs or shots in your inventory that you can use.
  2. They provide easy access to ranged attacks without the need to switch weapons. Positioning matters in Frayed Knights – and casters like to hang out in the back of groups where they are harder to hit with melee weapons.
  3. People other than sorcerers (which will usually, but not always, be Chloe) can have occasional access to some of the group-damage “minion clearing” attacks.
  4. When endurance runs dry, parties can fall back on throwing money at the bad guys. Yes, it’s a weird way to look at it, but when limited but “free” resources run dry in a fight, you can throw more expensive but effective weapons at them.

Risen 3: Titan Lords - Last Review Roundup

by Couchpotato, 01:36

Here is the last review roundup I will be doing for Risen 3, and the scores for most are negative. I'll let you all be the judge if their correct as opinions differ it seems.

RPG Codex - No Score

I doubt they will ever reach their past greatness again. This is made apparent both by the quality of their last two games, and by comparing the credits of Gothic 2 and Risen 3. Hell, even comparing Risen 1 to Risen 3 should be enough to draw the necessary conclusions.

The Gamers Hub - 4.5/10

Ultimately, Risen 3: Titan Lords isn’t that great. It does have its moments, but it certainly feels more like a chore to play through than a pleasure. If you consider yourself a fan of the series, or a serious RPG fanatic, then there’s undoubtedly some good content here to sink your teeth into. However, if you’re looking for a world to explore and just kill some time in – a la Skyrim – then this isn’t really the place for you.

3rd Strike - 5.5/10

Risen 3 as a game might work for some people and if you have played the first two games, you might give it a shot. We however have not been convinced about the game and hope that with a possible next installment Piranha Bytes will step up their game.

Hardcore Games - 95/100

Gamers who can see past Risen 3’s healthy measure of challenge and small handful of flaws will find themselves immersed in a dynamic RPG replete with compelling gameplay and a lively interactive narrative.

Gamasutra - 20 Fun Grid Facts (Hex Grids)

by Couchpotato, 01:25

Gamasutra has another hosted article this week from Herman Tulleken that might interest a few of you about hex grids in games. So read on for his twenty facts.

At Gamelogic we are obsessed with grids. We make tools for grids and write about grids, but our obsession goes way beyond this (we even have "Grid shirt Fridays").

We thought it might be a good idea to share some of the interesting (and obscure) facts we have uncovered in our quest to know everything we can about grids and their use in games. We have been sharing a short fact each day over Twitter; here we expand on those facts and add a few more. These are all about hexagonal grids, one of our favorite types of grids.

Square Enix - Final Fantasy XIII on The PC?

Hardcore Gamer has news that the entire Final Fantasy XIII series might be getting a PC release on Steam. This sound possible due to Square Enix talking about it before.

If there’s one thing PC devotees have always loved, it’s playing Final Fantasy on the PC. Ever since Final Fantasy VII worked its way onto computers in the late ’90s thanks to Eidos, playing a formerly console-exclusive game in the series on PC has always been exciting. It looks like the series could be again returning to PC, as a Steam logo has appeared on the official Final Fantasy XIII site:

Dex - Early Access Preview @ Cliqist

by Couchpotato, 01:11

My final verdict is… There is no final verdict. I enjoyed my time playing Dex, but it was absolutely riddled with small flaws and broken mechanics that would’ve ruined the experience for me, personally, if I’d paid the $15.99 price it’s currently asking. It’s hard to recommend in its current state, but if you check it out and like what you see, you can buy it early to help the devs out and play it when it’s finished. Just be careful out there, make informed purchasing decisions, and don’t give money to people who haven’t earned it. Stay classy, thanks for letting me talk your ear off.

RPG Codex - Felipe's CRPG Book

by Couchpotato, 05:09

Felipe from the RPG Codex is putting together a new digital book that will review over 280 CRPG's. Some of our members already know, and are helping him with reviews.

He recently got memotioned on Kotaku with a small update.

This guy is compiling a digital book that will review over 280 computer RPGs—and when it's done, you can get it for free. Developers like Obsidian's Chris Avellone have already agreed to participate. "The book is going well, but I need some spotlight to travel into the far reaches of the internet and reach fans with stories to tell," curator Felipe Pepe tells Kotaku. You can see some sample reviews here, and keep track of his progress on Google Docs.

Also thanks to Hiddenx I have a reminder he still needs more help.

If you're willing to help Felipe and write about one of the unassigned games, just send him a mail (Email-address: see Google Docs).

You can follow the development on Twitter:

Hunter's Tale - A New Pixel-Art RPG

by Couchpotato, 04:59

I found another RPG game this week called Hunter's Tale from a one man development team named Francesco Segala. Here is the usual video, and game description.

Hunter's Tale is (will be) an old fashioned action RPG in pixelart settled in a world filled with strange looking creatures. Our challenge was to have a sidescrolling game that would have focused on tactical fights and exploration: using depth allowed us (and the player) to move freely around the environment, and areas are designed to contain also hidden areas and paths.

We started the preproduction last March, and the actual game development from May. We want to see if the demo and trailer will be appreciated in order to decide how to move forward (go crowdfunding maybe, we don't know yet).

As we wanted to develop a full demo, we decided to focus only on one environment, the trailer and the demo (and all the material released so far) will contain scenes and monsters from the swamp only.

If we'll move on with the full game there will be more zones of course.

I also uploaded a few screenshots for the game on our website.

Original Sin - The Bear and The Burglar

by Couchpotato, 04:32

In-case you missed the news this week Larain sent out more information about the next DLC for the game called The Bear and The Burglar.

Divinity: Original Sin Gets Two New Companions in free The Bear and the Burglar DLC

Larian Studios is delivering some great new content to Divinity: Original Sin players today in the form of a juicy update. “The Bear and the Burglar” DLC pack,  available for free via Steam, not only improves co-op dialogue by streamlining lengthy discussions, but adds two brand new companions with unique story arcs who can join your party as you set off to save Rivellon.

Bairdotr, a curious and loyal ranger, has gotten herself into some trouble at the Legion barracks, while the silent rogue Wolgraff has found himself a nice hustle stealing coins from the wishing well in the Cyseal hinterlands (accessible through the graveyard tunnel).

Check out their concept art and a short description of each companion below:

Bairdotr

"You seem strong as mother, though your chest is not quite so hairy. Your sword may come in handy when we find who I seek."

Armed with her bow on her back and her claws at the ready, Bairdotr refuses to fail: She must navigate your world - a world of wonder and mysteries both fantastic and terrible - if she's to save Homeforest. The druid of the forest has been kidnapped, and Bairdotr must follow a scant trail of clues if she's to bring him back - clues that take her to the very heart of Rivellon's Source conspiracy.

Wolgraff

*Wolgraff gives you a knowing look. He seems to think the mayor is a few arrows short of a quiver.*

Dark Sourcery deprived Wolgraff of his voice when he was but a kid, and with it his dream of becoming a Source Hunter. Refused by the Order, he grew up to become a rogue, stealing from the rich and giving to... just himself actually. His is a world of silence, but if need be he lets his dagger do the talking for him.

To get “The Bear and the Burglar” DLC, just download it from Steam or update the game via GOG.com. You can find both companions in Cyseal when you start a new game, after you’ve downloaded the DLC. The DLC is also localized into German, French and Russian

There’s a lot more coming to Divinity: Original Sin in the coming months!

Gauntlet has always been a more enjoyable franchise with friends, but it has never felt as apparent as it did while playing this early access title. My experience with past titles in the series has been a hybrid of single player and co-op, with both being equally enjoyable experiences. This time around, playing the title solo felt intimidating and was not nearly as enjoyable as it had been in the past (although it did make escaping from Death significantly easier). In order to truly enjoy Gauntlet, it seems you will need to get a group of friends together to tackle the dungeons.

Stevivor

In conclusion this is a enjoyable and addictive arcade dungeon crawler which, I feel, will have a short lifespan. It felt a lot more straight forward and simplistic than the original and I hope the final 8 chapters introduce the varied routes and tough decisions of the original. That said, it's debuting at just $20 so, if you want a decent co-operative game, this is definitely one to keep your eye on.

Gamecloud

In comparison to other Gauntlet games, this one will be quite short. The first act makes up one-third of the entire game, which only took me two hours to complete on the normal difficulty. Having said that, if the preview is anything to go by then it’ll be a solid contribution to the series. Its few foibles can be easily forgiven, since they’re not exactly game-breaking and seem almost insignificant compared to how much the game got right. The focus on gameplay over character management should make for some great multiplayer experiences; with the addition of online play, as well, it will make organising 4-player Gauntlet games much easier. It’ll be better too, because I love Gauntlet (this version included) and I love playing it with friends, but Gauntlet should be played for hours on end and people start to smell by that point.

The 3D feeling when moving in Dungeon Kingdom world with an oculus rift Virtual Reality Headset is fantastic ! Note that the version for oculus has some gameplay changes: while you still play a team, you won't have to care about your heroes to fight, they'll handle it themselves, make it easier to play.

Elminage Gothic - Pre-Orders Available on Steam

by Couchpotato, 04:19

Elminage Gothic a new dungeon crawler from the Japanese developer of the Wizardry titles called  Starfish SD, and you can now pre- order the game on Steam.

From the makers of the world renowned “Wizardry Empire” titles, Starfish SD brings you the latest entry in their popular series of dungeon crawlers. Elminage Gothic, previously only available in Japanese on PlayStation® Portable, now comes to PC offering a classic old school dungeon crawling experience with a dark, gothic twist!

In ancient times, the Great and Dark Gods clashed in a ferocious war over Man's control of the world, bringing despair and ruin to the lives of all humans.

As the conflict raged, the Great Gods sought to vanquish the power of the Dark Gods through the faith of humans. In return for their faith, the Gods promised humans a world of peace and prosperity and thereby a contract between humans and the Great Gods was formed.

By the contract, the Dark Gods could not interfere with the world of humans and were forever sealed inside their world of darkness. The people worshiped the Great Gods in thanks for their prosperity, and the world entered an era of peace.

However…

The humans grew complacent and allowed their faith to fade.

Now, in the far-off realm of Ishmag, King Jardin ushers in an age of peace. Unknown to him, the dark powers have already begun reaching out in secret, planting the seeds to bring about the revival of the Dark Gods into the hearts of men. Foul and hideous creatures are emerging from the deep, treacherous caves of Tsun-Kurn and rumours of a rising evil are creeping across the peaceful lands.

It is up to you to arm yourself and descend into the depths of Tsun-Kurn in an attempt to put an end to the ever growing darkness and save your kingdom.

Features include:
• Well over 80 hours of dungeon crawling gameplay!
• Hundreds of stunning monsters, creatures and demons to defeat
• Multiple character classes
• The classic and traditional “THAC0” system!
• Full English translation

This PC conversion also features a number of improvements over the original, including:
• Higher resolution art
• Improved user interface

Thank you Spoonful for the link.

Rampant Games - Is Simplicity Overrated?

by Couchpotato, 04:14

The Rampant Coyote gives his opinion on the recent articles that criticize Simplicity on the internet this week. I found it interesting ,and I hope most of you enjoy reading it.

Anyway, all this is really an introduction to a fascinating piece by Craig Stern, “Against the Cult of Simplicity.” He makes a ton of arguments (he’s a lawyer by day, so he’s good at this) that while simplicity may be a virtue, it is not the only virtue. It seems that the indie community is perhaps getting pushed too far in that direction. While it may be a good thing to correct some poor tendencies, what we’re really going for is a balance. Simplicity is not the end-goal for many (or even most) games.

It’s something of a companion piece to his earlier article at indieRPGs.com, “Where are all the RPGs at IGF?” This article illustrated another bias against more complex games – simpler games are faster and easier to “get,” which makes them more likely to get a fair shake from harried judges at these shows. If a game even sounds like it’s going to take more than ten minutes to evaluate, many judges won’t bother even looking at it.

Much of the challenge and delight (I like using that word – it isn’t exactly the same thing as “fun,” but it can encapsulate fun, fascination, admiration, and many other factors) of RPGs is in the interaction of these systems. Even in relatively simple RPGs (think 16-bit-style JRPGs), these systems can get really complex, balancing combat, exploration, some skills, leveling, gear, and expendable items (which represent a cost in gold, replenished through combat and exploration). But this is something that can’t be fully introduced to a player in five or ten minutes. You can touch on it, but it’s still a lot for a player to absorb, let alone gain any kind of mastery.

I think I’m in complete agreement with Craig, here. I believe that the quote attributed to Einstein (whether or not he really said it, it’s a good one) should be applied on a per-game basis, not to games in general. Extremely simple games are awesome, and can be both critically and commercially successful (Flappy Bird, anyone?). But that’s not the be-all, end-all goal of game design.

Invisible, Inc - Preview @ Hardcore Gamer

by Couchpotato, 04:09

Matt Whittaker of Hardcore Gamer posted a new preview of Invisible, Inc based on the games early beta on Steam Early Access. Here is his conclusion.

Invisible, Inc. is a fresh take on two age-old genres, perfectly blending stealth and top-down strategy. It’s a thinking man’s game that requires patience, intellect, and a general sense of purpose. While it’s great to play mindless beat-‘em-ups, hilarious RPGs (read: South Park: The Stick of Truth), and pointless platformers, it’s great to use one’s brain every now and again. If you’re seeking a deeply strategic game with fresh ideas, then look no further, as Invisible, Inc. is the title for you.

Elder Scrolls Online - Update 4 Released

by Couchpotato, 04:05

ZeniMax Online has released Update #4 for Elder Scrolls Online. I also have a new video of the Dragonstar Arena introduced in the new patch.

Update 4 is now available on both the North American and European megaserver, and there’s a ton to see in it! The roads to Upper Craglorn are open, and new quests, delves, and the conclusion of the Celestial storyline are all waiting for your group to explore. Visit Dragonstar and prepare to take on the Scaled Court and their new monstrosities.

A new Trial, Sanctum Ophidia, is open. In it, you’ll take the fight right to the heart of the Scaled Court, battling the deadliest among their ranks, including the Celestial Serpent itself. Vanquish it, and you and your allies will enjoy great renown—and great loot.

Let’s not forget the Dragonstar Arena! This entirely new type of challenge is designed for four Veteran players, and will put your skills to the test. Can you survive waves of dangerous enemies and hazardous conditions to prove yourself a champion? With ten arenas in both Normal and Veteran Mode, there’s plenty of blood sport just waiting for the brave.

Of course, there’s much more in Update 4: a new crafting trait, expanded delves, improvements to grouping during quests, and tons of fixes. Make sure to read the full patch notes, and enjoy the update!

RPGWatch - After Reset Interview

by Couchpotato, 05:23

Last week I had the chance to interview Mr. Nixon of Black Cloud Studios. I asked the community to send questions, and some of you responded. So lets get started.

CouchPotato: Thanks for agreeing to do the interview Mr. Nixon, and congratulations on getting funded. To start can you give us some information about yourself, and your company Black Cloud Studios?

Mr. Nixon: Thank you, Kevin, and thank RPGWatch for being interested and for giving us an opportunity to talk about our game.

Mostly I’m a common RPG gamer like many others who are reading our interview right now. 3 years ago, as a former Dungeon Master, I began to work on the After Reset setting as a hobby, spending my own savings on elaborating it as a realistic post-apocalyptic word. When the core of the setting was complete with hard sci-fi details, I began to hire free-lance artists and musicians so that they could begin animating my vision. Then there were modelers, programmers, video editors etc. By the time of Fall of 2013, when I decided to put After Reset RPG on Steam Greenlight just for fun, I had a permanent group of free-lancers who I had been working with for a long time. After the surprising success on Steam Greenlight, they formed the core of Black Cloud Studios.
