Wasteland 2 - Work Continues On

by Couchpotato, 04:21

The next post-funding update for Wasteland 2 has infomation from InXile Entertainment about new patches, reviews, and physical goods shipping.

Deep Breath…OK, Now Work Continues On

Wow! We've been extremely humbled and electrified at the feedback coming in during Wasteland 2's first week as an officially released game! We love seeing you discover all the little touches and intricacies of the game. We have been very happy to see people engrossed by the game we made with your help, and the high praise directed at it! So, mission accomplished, time to wrap this baby up!

I kid..I kid. We started working on our first patch even before the game was out, and released it last Friday. You can find the 9 pages of patch notes over on our tumblr.

Many fixes were to issues we were aware of but we've also been keeping an eye on your feedback, and tweaking the game experience based on the masses of information flowing across the various discussion boards on the web. One example of this was reducing the jam rates for guns that most frequently caused problems. Our design team is busy cleaning up issues in the various levels and will continue to do so. We are also hard at work fixing memory-related issues to reduce crashes on 32-bit machines.

The game launched with some problems in localizations causing keywords to be entirely missing which could lock you into dialogs. With the latest patch these bugs should be resolved, we will continue to catch any straggling bugs and to polish, edit and improve the localized versions in the future. We fully intend to continue supporting and updating this game, while we are also starting on the development of our modding tools.

Reviews

Part of the fun and horror of releasing a game is watching reviews stream in, both from users and press. Thankfully it was more fun than horror as Wasteland 2 currently stands at 88% recommended on Steam, with a lot of great reads in the top helpful reviews.

Press reviews have been great as well, such as these from Game Informer (8.75), Gizorama (4.5/5), and GamesBeat (94). We're rounding up all reviews on our tumblr (116 and counting).

Physical Goods Shipping

While everyone can and hopefully is playing Wasteland 2 now with their Steam or GOG keys from the Ranger Center, we've been awaiting timelines from Deep Silver on physical shipping. Because they assembled different elements from different locations in the world and generally used slower shipping, the timeline of physical goods was much longer than we anticipated. As it is looking now, our timeline will be:
- The first batch of physical goods will be standard boxes only, shipped on the 3rd week of this month. These will go out to backers receiving only the standard box.
- Batches of physical goods including the metal Collector's Edition box will ship next and we'll announce a more precise time as soon as we have it.

Deep Silver will ship them with general post shipping (without tracking). We will keep you informed as we get more info on the specific batches shipping out.

We apologize this process took longer than we'd planned or hoped for at the outset. Unfortunately, things outside of our control made it take longer than anticipated. We will do our utmost to ensure you get your physical goods as soon as is possible and in good order.

RPGWatch - Graal Seeker Interview

by Couchpotato, 03:27

I had the chance to interview French developer Lugludum about their new Tactical RPG game called Graal Seeker on Indiegogo. To get you all stated here is sample.

Couchpotato: The website mentions the game will have choice and consequences how will they work? I'm also curious if they will alter the game world as you proceed through the campaign?

Lugludum: As mentioned before, all choices made in the game are analysed to make a profile of the player and lead him to a specific Graal quest. Indeed, the Graal can take different forms depending on the Graal Seeker's choices. So he could be redirected to a Christian story, Pagan story, or even something esoteric. For example, if the player always helps Christians and kills Pagans, we will definitely propose to him a Christian quest for the Grail. And of course, if he encounters Morgan, she will be his enemy and vice versa.

Graywalkers - Short Shout-out Update

by Couchpotato, 03:24

Dreamlords Digital's next update for Graywalkers: Purgatory has a short list of upcoming events, and gives a shout out to a few other kickstarter games.

Short, Sweet & Shout-outs

Hello everybody! Today we will have a short update, at least in comparison to our usual loooong updates. We're just preparing more informative and exciting updates for all of you in the next few days. We are aiming to have an update for you guys as often as we can. There's a lot of information to share and we would like to give you as much as we can to build your enthusiasm for what lies ahead.

Things have slowed down here over the past few days but I'm confident that things will get better. We still have 33 days to go and we are now at 32% of the way to our goal.  What I'm happy about is that we have quite a number of backers already. We're at 458, so we're just 140 shy of the final number of backers we had from our first campaign.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Demo Update - we currently have a demo update lined up very soon. We're slowly improving the existing demo and trying to listen to the feedback that people have made. Obviously, not all feedback can be addressed immediately, but rest assured that we have made sure that we will not forget them. Right now, we're working on adding additional levels to the demo. We can't give you an exact date yet when it will be finished. We're hoping we should have it sometime next week.
  • Updates Request - if you have any topics you would want us to cover or simply any other questions, feel free to ask us (please), and we'll try to cover them in the future updates. This is your chance to let us know exactly what you want to know more in depth about the game. Scheduled to be discussed in the next few days are: Character Creation, Combat, Enemies, Gear, Magic, History, Graywalker Backgrounds and Strategic Management. Expect more, but these are guaranteed to be discussed.
  • Social Media Support - we would like to request everybody to please continue spreading the word around about us through social media such as facebook and twitter.
  • Raffle - we will be starting our giveaway raffle very soon. Some examples of giveaways we have in store are the following: Batman™: Arkham Asylum GOTY, Crysis 2 Maximum Edition, F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, Natural Selection 2, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North, Dead Space, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 - Uprising and more. They are old but good games. You can participate in the raffle by fulfilling the requirements. By doing more of them, you get more raffle tickets. Examples of tasks are tweeting, posting on FB and the like. Basically we're asking you to spread the word about the game, and hopefully have the added incentive of getting a prize. We will inform you more about it in the next update as we prepare for it.

Icewind Dale: EE - Interview @ RPGamer

by Couchpotato, 03:15

RPGamer had the chance to interview Trent Oster of Overhaul Games about Icewind Dale: EE, and his future plans of what  the studio will work on next.

JS: I know there were some issues with lost source code and graphical assets for the Baldur's Gate games, was this the case as well for Icewind Dale?

TO: Once again, we started with only some code and assets. At this point we are starting to get used to it. As we moved into development, we managed to uncover some additional assets, but we still spent a great deal of time reconstructing, or simply recreating content. For the Heart of Winter expansion, we had no code for the new engine features, so we relied heavily on a few team members, with a lot of effort from Laszlo Toth (known as Avenger_teambg on the community), to help us reverse engineer the new features. With the user interface it was a complete re-paint. We were able to bring in a talented friend in the person of Lee Nielsen who re-built every single pixel in the Icewind Dale UI, and it looks great.

JS: Is the development cycle on Icewind Dale: EE going to be significantly shorter than the Baldur's Gate: EEs?

TO: We've been working on Icewind Dale for quite a while now. We kept it under wraps with the goal of announcing only a month or so before we were ready to ship. While we don't have a final ship date yet, as we want to ensure the quality before we release the game, we are in the late stages of testing with a current burn-down indicating a ship date later this month or early October.

JS: Do you plan to follow this up with Icewind Dale II: EE?

TO: If Icewind Dale is a brother or sister to the Baldur's Gate games in terms of code and gameplay differences, Icewind Dale II and Planescape: Torment are more like third cousins. You can see the lineage, but the changes are deep. At this point we haven't gone spelunking too deep into those changes, but we are aware of many differences which will drive up the effort to do our thing on those projects. We hope to do more spleunking once we finish up with the 1.3 Updates for Baldur's Gate: EE and Baldur's Gate II: EE and ship Icewind Dale: EE.

JS: We have discussed the potential of Baldur's Gate III in past interviews. Is it something that is still potentially on the table or being considered?

TO: We are still interested in Baldur's Gate III. As to what a Baldur's Gate III would be, wow, that is a terrifying premise. I think every Baldur's Gate fan has a different image in their head as to what it would be, and making all of those fans happy would be a monumental challenge. For now, we haven't started any work on a Baldur's Gate III, but we do discuss the concept on a pretty regular basis.

Telepath Tactics - September Update

by Couchpotato, 03:02

The September development update for Telepath Tactics was posted this week. As usual I can't list every detail of the update so visit the link above for more information.

Another month has passed, and that means it’s time to provide an update on Telepath Tactics! So what’s new?

First, there’s this! Much as with the voice actors from my last game, I’ve been wanting to interview some of the folks who’ve helped me out with various aspects of Telepath Tactics. These are extremely talented people, and they deserve recognition for their efforts. I’ve started out by interviewing Telepath Tactics composer Ryan Richko. He has interesting things to say about composing for video games, but just as importantly, there is some pretty awesome music embedded in the article. I suggest giving it a listen if you haven’t yet!

Shadow of Mordor - Reviews & Interviews

by Couchpotato, 02:29

Here is another roundup of reviews for Shadow of Mordor this week. I also found two interviews to go along with the reviews. So happy reading and watching everyone.

PC Gamer - 85/100

The tech specs are demanding, but this is the Middle-Earth game to rule them all.

Digital Trends - 4.5/5

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor nears perfection, but the demands of a scripted narrative work against its freeform structure.

Videogamer - 9/10
Shadow of Mordor is a triumph, its final irony being that it's arguably the best and most pure Assassin's Creed game to date.
Gamestm8/10
A hugely entertaining, tongue-in-cheek and fulsome experience, it’s a worthy expedition whether you’re a Rings fan or not.
Shadow of Mordor paints the pictures that rest somewhere between bookends.
And for last here are the two interviews.Wink

Early reviews have been promising, and ahead of the game's October 3 release, we got a chance to play the wonderful open-world extravaganza, and have a chat with lead designer from Monolith Productions, Bob Roberts, who told me about the challenges of making a licensed game, the studio's collaboration with Warner Bros, and their hope to "humanise" Middle-Earth's trouble-making Orcs.

Gamereactor

Gillen caught up with lead game designer Bob Roberts to discuss the game and find out more about its development.

"We definitely kept up with exactly what they're [the film production] doing in the films," said Roberts. "Make sure we're not generating any kinds of details that would ever overlap and taking advantage as much as we can of the world they're creating to kind of inspire us as we build out Mordor."

Celestial Tear - Campaign Almost Over

by Couchpotato, 02:12

The Celestial Tear:Demon's Revenge kickstarter has 20 hours left, and looks like it will fail at getting funded. The developer also posted a new update about the projects status.

Our campaign is coming to its end.

This has been another great experience with just a little time left we are still looking to do this. Maybe I just have a lot of faith but we shall see what happens in the end. Regardless of whatever happens I want you all to know we appreciate your time spent into our campaign. We have a great game and it will be made!

I believe we have a story that needs to be told. We want to bring more diversity into the gaming world and we feel we have the tools to make it into something big. I think that is the dream of most indie developers is to be the next Super Meat Boy, or Braid.

I believe this is something that will put my kids through college and give my family a better life. There is nothing like being able to use your talents to support your family. If we just had this one chance to show everyone what we could really do, we know we could shock the world. We will never know until we get this opportunity. If it happens now or a month from now, we will always remember the people who supported us first.

Thanks again for all your support we truly appreciate it.

Satellite Reign - Pre-Alpha Gameplay Demo

by Couchpotato, 08:58

5 Lives released a new Pre-Alpha gameplay video for Satellite Reign. Thank you tomasp3n for sending me the link, and the rest of you enjoy the ten minute video.

We’ve got a special treat for you today. As we mentioned in our last update, alpha-level backers will be getting a build of Satellite Reign very soon. But, we can’t let them keep ALL of the excitement to themselves! Chris and his beard have worked together to bring you a narrated gameplay demo of the beginning of the pre-alpha build about to be released.

All of the usual pre-alpha disclaimers apply: nothing in the video is final, performance optimisations are ongoing, and so on. Interested? Take a look!

We’ve still got plenty of work to go until Satellite Reign is complete. There are more simulation systems to make, more characters to build, more environments to design and fill with art, more animations to make, and lots of balancing to do, but we’re pleased to say that thus far, things are on-track.

Witcher 3 - DLC & DRM Interview @ IGN

by Couchpotato, 05:13

IGN posted a short sample of a new interview with developer CD Projekt Red that talks about DLC, and DRM for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Speaking to IGN during last week's EGX convention, head of marketing and PR Michal Platkow-Gilewski revealed it ultimately comes down to what they want to encounter in releases from other developers.

"We don’t want to assault anyone," he said. "Each time we are thinking about a decision, the first rule is we have to treat gamers like we’d like to be treated. We don’t believe in DRM because we hate DRM. It also doesn’t protect, not really. Games are cracked in minutes, hours or days, but they’re always cracked. If you want to pirate you’ll find a way. But if you’re a committed gamer and are buying the game why should we place a barrier on you?

"Then, with DLC, it’s small content. Like one-thousandth of the whole game. Why should you charge for that? If it’s small, give it for free. I know it’s not always possible or easy but this is what we want to give gamers; a little bit of love, which we’d like to get from other developers as gamers ourselves."

Graywalkers - Emergent Strategy Update

by Couchpotato, 05:09

Dreamlords Digital's third update for Graywalkers about how the games Emergent Strategy will work. Basically it explains how the game world will react to you.

Emergent Strategy

Hello! Today we will be tackling something that comes up a lot of times. People ask what exactly is a strategic emergent game and how are we applying it to Graywalkers Purgatory in particular. This is one of the core things that makes our game different from other turn-based strategy games so we'd like to explain them to everybody else.

For those who were in the past campaign, some may realize this is the same article. Nonetheless, we felt that the content was complete and would really give a good picture of what emergent really is. For those who have read it before, re-reading it would not be bad thing considering it's been 9 months since then. As for the new backers, its a long but very interesting read.

Hopefully, by the end of it, you will have a better understanding of what we're trying to achieve with Graywalkers Purgatory. So, let's get to it. Our CTO and Lead Engineer Ferds (Ferdinand Fernandez) will be the one to explain this to you guys.

INT - A New Roguelike Sci-Fi RPG

I received news today about a new game called INT from the developer Starboard Games. As I usually do here is a new video, and short game description.

INT is a roguelike Sci-Fi RPG with a heavy focus on exploration, dungeon crawling, character customization and story, brought to you by indie enthusiasts.  The focus is on the character’s journey through a war-torn world through randomized and pre-set levels with fast-paced combat against hordes of enemies.  The player must accomplish quests like a traditional RPG, complete objectives, and meet crew members which will aid in survival.  Throughout the game you can side and complete missions through criminal cartels, and the two major combatants, the UCE and ACP, of the Interstellar Civil War.

Before playing the actual game we plan on giving away a free, public, demo.  This demo will be hosted on this page and our main web-page.  The demo will showcase game assets, the world, environments, and characters that you will journey with during the main quest.   While we are still developing the demo it is our hope that you will begin interacting with us and giving us your thoughts on our universe.

Throughout our public demo, you will journey through a horrific warzone on the planet Bastion in an attempt to escape the world.  At the end of the demo you may find a starship which will allow you to escape the planet, if you are so lucky. The main game will pit you against the forces of two warring factions, numerous criminal cartels, and rogue agents.  You will have to keep flying to survive in this dastardly universe.

It will be up to you to explore roguelike worlds which are randomly generated or journey to the warzones that make up the Interstellar Civil War.  During your journey you will find numerous companions some random, others placed for you.  It will be up to you to trust them because in INT everyone has a secret and some have a dagger aimed for your back.

by Couchpotato, 04:47

The developers of Dungeon Kingdom posted an update on Steam. Also as a reminder the game still needs more funding on Indiegogo to to help make the game.

Time for an update! We are currently working hard on the new video for Dungeon Kingdom. We have plenty of assets created by 3D artists, but it takes some time to make them "ready" for the game’s fully dynamic environments. We have made some great progress and we are confident that you will enjoy the results. We are very excited about what you will discover in the trailer!

Shadow of Mordor - Now Available on Steam

by Couchpotato, 04:42

Shadow of Mordor is now available on Steam, and has a new launch trailer. Now I haven' t had a chance to download the game yet so I can't give my opinion.

Middle-earth : Shadow of Mordor™ delivers a dynamic game environment where the player orchestrates their personal plan of vengeance as they bend Mordor to their will. The game begins on the night of Sauron’s return to Mordor, as his Black Captains brutally execute the Rangers of the Black Gate. Players become Talion, a ranger who loses his family and everything he holds dear, only to be returned from death by a mysterious Spirit of vengeance. Based on the player’s actions with the in-game Nemesis System, every enemy encountered is distinct and can evolve to become a personal archenemy through the course of the game.  As Talion’s personal vendetta unfolds, players uncover the mystery of the Spirit that compels him, discover the origin of the Rings of Power and confront the ultimate nemesis.

Dragon Tournament - Square Collective Updates

by Couchpotato, 04:36

Ars Tactica: Dragon Tournament has two new updates on the Square Collective. The first update talks about the the games story, and give a short history lesson.

The story starts in the Realm of Loha a century after the Dragon War that confronted the kingdom and its allies against the dragons and their supporters. The conflict culminated with the banishment of the dragons which put an end to the hostilities among the realms. This brought an era of peace among humans and the Aurum Alliance, which symbolically unites all kingdoms, was established. Ever since, each decade a festival is celebrated to commemorate the event and the Dragon Tournament, a remembrance of the battles fought, is hosted in the original locations where they took place. Guilds around all the kingdoms are invited to participate and fight for the price of being granted a wish from Ryzard, the Golden King of Loha.

The second update gives information on the three main classes you can play as.

Here they come the first 3 jobs for our game, the Dark Mage a magic focused class, the Berserker a close combat specialist, and the knight an all round fighter that has very few flaws.

Gauntlet - Review Roundup #2

by Couchpotato, 04:30

Here is the second  batch of reviews this week for the just released Gauntlet Remake.

Eurogamer - 6/10

Sadly, the biggest problem with this whole package may be that Arrowhead has already made a truly great Gauntlet tribute anyway, and it was Magicka. There was a game with the freedom to choose its own first principles, while still having Gauntlet's mean-spirited playfulness baked into it. The difference, I suspect, is between being creatively inspired by the spirit and ethos of a legendary design, and being cast as a kind of well-intentioned caretaker.

Game Trailers - 7.9/10

Gauntlet is an accessible co-op dungeon crawler that's at its best with a group of friends. It may be on the shorter side, but while it lasts it's an unpredictable and memorable experience. Hopefully this is only the first of many steps into the perilous Gauntlet.

Arcade Sushi - 7.5/10

If you want an old-school adventure that will let you hack, slash and steal stuff from your buddies, Gauntlet’s for you. The dungeons may be a bit repetitive and could have more variety, but the fun is there.

Gameinformer - 7/10

There’s definitely a charming old-school spark to this reboot, but without anything beyond the constant monster mashing and levels that seem to blend together, you may find yourself needing excitement badly.

CGM - 7/10

The thing is that, this could be a fun arcade-style homage to the original game and a worthy game in its own right, but its lack of variation kills it. Difficulty increases mean more gold and those with achievement fever might want to collect all the items, cosmetic pieces, and special goals, but they’d have to grind over the same levels to do it.

InSomnia - Concept Art & Image Galleries

by Couchpotato, 04:23

The next post-funding kickstarter update for InSomnia has some new concept art from Studio Mono, and provided a new link to the image gallery on the games website.

Our concept art & Ilustration galleries had some extensive upgrades! The section got some new art pieces by the team’s artists, whose talent and hard work serve to make InSomnia’s visual style deeper and wider with every day. New pieces aside, the section’s got some new technical changes as well: concepts can be shared on social networks, saved for later use and viewed with more comfort.

Automaton - Jane Jensen Interview

by Couchpotato, 04:18

A site the name of Automaton posted a new interview with Jane Jensen about her soon to be released 20th Anniversary Edition of Gabriel Knight in October.

In the original version, Tim Curry voiced the title character, affecting a New Orleans accent for the role. The new Gabriel Knight is voiced by Jason Victor, whom Jensen discovered to be huge fan of the original game. “[Jason] was delightful to work with because he knew the game so well, and knew the character so well, that when we were in the studio he knew immediately where a line occurred and what the context was. He has a very deep voice, and he adds a more interesting earthiness to the character. Of course we love Tim Curry and we hope he's doing well, but it was interesting to see someone else's take on it.

“The only person we had difficulty casting was Gabriel. We couldn't find anyone among [BA Sound's] stable of actors. Jason had worked on the King's Quest game that Phoenix had done, and he was a big fan. We had even used him as a Gabe voice when we did our Kickstarter promos. We let him audition for that, and I loved it, and so did the voice director at BA Sound. When you do a character like that, he had 5,000 lines of dialogue, and it can be excruciatingly slow if he's not getting it.”

For the 20th Anniversary Edition, Jensen has added some new puzzles, locations, and gameplay tweaks.  “The approach I tried to take is not to reinvent the wheel on it. To stay as true to the original as was reasonable. It was something that was successful and that people loved, and we knew that the more that we changed it, the more the fans would have a problem with that... In the original game, Gabriel could ask anyone about anything. Which meant you'd have a dialogue tree that had twenty topics, and a lot of times that person wouldn't know anything about ‘Cabrit Sans Cor’, but you still felt like you had to ask them.

Serpent in the Staglands - Beta & New Website

by Couchpotato, 06:22

Whalenought Studios has a new forum post about a new website for Serpent in the Staglands, and share some information about the games beta version.

We’ve updated the site to include data on the skills and spells available at the beginning of the beta, which is limited to grade 1. In-game you only see data for your current skill level and what you’ll get with an additional point put in, so this was a convenient location for looking at it whole. We’ll be updating those as we balance throughout the beta, along with adding in grade 2 down the road.

We’re expecting the beta to open up to backers next weekend, and to start will include a small group of areas in Orf’s Bridge at the beginning of the game. More details on that when we release.

As the beta is progressing, we’ll be releasing updates responding to any bugs and your suggestions, and eventually add in the second half of the beta content and grade 2 of skills to test. We’re aiming on not releasing any of the major plot oriented discoveries, which for as open as the game is can be a challenge, so we’re changing a few things for the beta builds. Everything is feature complete, so you can test everything that will be in the game in a low-level setting.
