Frontiers - Update - Input Requested.

I have been given the opportunity to interview Lars Simkins; Creator & Developer of the successful kickstarter & Steam greenlit Frontiers!

I will also be asking questions of Ryan Span.  Author, writer, gamer.  He wrote the majority of the story and dialogue for Frontiers.  Feel free to ask opinions on writing for games, RPG's etc. My favorite line from Ryan so far in this process has to be on his reasons for joining Frontiers.. "Lastly, there was talk of writers being used as _writers_, not glorified level designers. My decision was practically made for me. I had to be on this team."

Both of them have said they are OK with questions not specifically related to Frontiers. Ask away. I've collected some via email/PM but can always use more.

I am requesting input, questions, ideas, etc. Anything you've ever wanted to ask these guys. Lars has ran a very open kickstarter campaign and has kept backers in the loop.  One of the rare campaigns that has regular & honest updates. Brutally honest.

Unrest - Review @ RPGamer

RPGamer staff member Zach Welhouse played Pyrodactyl Games Unrest, and gave the game a final score of 3.5/5.

Unrest aims high and doesn't quite live up to its hype. The number of non-choices could say something depressing about fate for critics interested in following that interpretation, but more than that it feels like the game could have benefited from more development time. The basics are sound and the story-telling is top-notch, but it's all over too soon to flesh out the story it wants to tell. Be that as it may, aiming for the stars has its benefits. Unrest's setting invites players to a world unexplored by most RPGs, and the writing showcases thoughtful consideration of characters and social issues. It isn't a game that will appeal to everyone, but those who like it will like it a lot.

Now I bid you all farewll as I'm going on a short hiatus, and I doubt you will miss me.  So I'll see you all in five days as I'm going on vacation for my birthday this weekend.

Frayed Knights - Free Strategy Guide

The Rampant Coyote latest post on his website reminds everyone again the sale of Frayed Knights will be ending soon. He also talks about the Free Strategy Guide.

There are still 24 hours left to pick up Frayed Knights: The Skull of S’makh-Daon on Steam at the launch discount.

If you have already played the game and now own the Steam version, if you feel so inclined, please post a review on the Steam page.

Additionally, if you haven’t done so yet, I offer the strategy guide for the game for free. You can grab it here. The page encourages you to register for the (sadly, rare) email newsletter, but that’s entirely optional. Meaning: Please don’t put in a bogus address just to get the strategy guide. It’s yours if you want it, with or without your email.

The strategy guide is not just a walkthrough. I wanted it to really be an accessory to Frayed Knights: The Skull of S’makh-Daon (in addition to the 69-page manual) with some information on the world itself, peeks under the  hood at the game system and content, hints for those who just need a nudge, and a walkthrough for people who really need the help. Which would probably be me, if I was playing, rather than get frustrated by a part of the game.

So if you have the game, grab the strategy guide! Or, hey, grab the strategy guide even if you don’t have the game!

Path of Exile - Forsaken Masters Announced

Grinding Gear Games posted news on the games forum with the title. and a new description of the games latest expansion called Forsaken Masters.

Coming on August 20!

Path of Exile: Forsaken Masters will be released at 3pm on August 20 (US Pacific Time). This is midnight in the CEST timezone and 10am on August 21 in New Zealand.

This article is not the full patch notes for Path of Exile: Forsaken Masters. We'll be releasing those patch notes a day or two before the expansion is released. There are dozens of other changes included such as a new Quest Tracker, Tutorials and PvP Spectator Mode.

We're so proud of this expansion and can't wait to share it with you. There are so many interesting mission variations to explore and powerful new possibilities with crafting. Half of our development team is addicted to building custom Hideouts! Over the next three weeks we'll be updating this article with reveals of unannounced Masters and other content. Enjoy!

Original Sin - Review Roundup #5

I know I said I wouldn't post another roundup of reviews for Divinity: Original Sin, but I lied. Here is the next round of reviews everyone they just keep being posted.

RPGFan - 89/100

Divinity: Original Sin will test your patience, skill, and the limits of your love for flawed creations. If you can get past the brutally difficult and mechanically confusing opening, you'll find a rewarding experience created in the tradition of old computer RPGs. One that, for all its wonders, manages to be maddening at times and soporific at others. If you're tired of hand holding and exclamation points above NPC heads, if you want a challenge, if you grew up playing classic computer RPGs and haven't been properly sated in years, you might find a new addiction with Original Sin. Just be warned that its enchantment grows dim at times, though any brush with wonder is worthwhile.

GamingBolt - 8/10

If there's ever been a time to throw out the words "Indie" or "Developed on a budget" then now is the time. As it proves that time, effort, fan feedback, and passion, are more important than high budgets, annual recycling, scripted Hollywood aesthetics, and glorified tech demos.

GodisaGeek - 7/10

A game that does well as a single-player RPG, and does well as a vast, exploration-based semi-open-world adventure, but excels at neither. Better than many of the RPGs in its ancestry, it nonetheless suffers from frustrating NPC engagement and lacks the intelligent storyline required to make it a classic of the genre.

Denkiphile - 4.5/5

Divinity: Original Sin is a surprising gem in modern PC releases not only because of how niche the actual gameplay is but also of the overall quality of the game. I honestly have no idea how it has been so well-received and successful considering the average person probably isn’t into cRPGs, but it does give me hope for the future that games can be successful without requiring the need to dumb down the gameplay, and that is probably the biggest thing to come out of this title.

And before I forget the Russian version is now available.

I know we're supposed to be on a two week holiday, but we couldn't let this slide: thanks to the hard work of the fine people at 1C, you can now play the game in Russian!

Please note that we aware of some minor issues: because of the latest patch we did before our holidays, some UI text is still in English (e.g. names of personalities in the New Game screen, names of some graphical option settings), but we will fix these as soon as possible.

Agarest: Generations of War 2 - Status Update

Developer Ghostlight posted a new udate for the port of Agarest: Generations of War 2. If your not famaimiar with the series the game is a tactical role-playing game.

Currently most of the work on this one has been on the technical side of things as our programmers have been busily rewriting and replacing the original PlayStation® 3 libraries ready for the PC version – no small task!  Until this process is complete we’re not able to fully run the game on PC, so as you might expect I haven’t managed to get my teeth into this one much yet - but I can’t wait!  I have, however, been spending quite a bit of time working on a new control method for the PC version.  Adapting the controls hasn’t proved too troublesome a task, aside from the battle system which still needs a little more thought given to it.  As you may be aware, Agarest 2 has a different, much faster paced battle system compared to the first two games in the series and it’s proving a bit harder to nail down a mouse & keyboard replacement for the battle wheel.  There’s still plenty of time to work on improving the system though, and we’ll hopefully have it sorted as we go into early testing - I’ll be looking forward to feedback on the control system from our Beta testers.

Kickstarter - Two New RPG Games

Here are two more kickstarters that maybe of interest to some of you. Wink

The first kickstarter is a new JRPG by developer Gomiya Games called Braven Arts. The asking goal is $20,000 with twenty two days left. Here is a short description.

Braven Arts is a 2D turn-based fantasy RPG, influenced by the 16-bit JRPG classics such as Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, and Suikoden planned for release in late 2015. We want to take the backbone of the old classics, whip it up with modernized systems and mechanics, and give players something fresh that they can dig hours into just like we did with the old games.

The second kickstarter is a new narrative RPG called Fritz from Truceful Entertainment. The asking goal for this project is only $15,000. Again here is a short description.

Fritz is a narrative RPG with brutal real-time combat about life in the trenches of the First World War. You play as Fritz, a German soldier on the Western Front. Most of the gameplay is comprised of everyday activities like guard duty, getting food, and talking to your fellow soldiers. Attacks are sparse, but deadly and challenging.

The main aspect of the game is character development, both of Fritz and of his comrades. Each of them is shaped by interaction with others and the things they're going through. Your comrades can die practically randomly during attacks, but the longer they survive, and they closer they get to Fritz, the better their chances of survival as everyone helps each other.

Gravia Tactics - 24 Hours & First 50 Backers

Punchbag Entertainment posted a kickstarter update a few back for Gravia Tactics with information on the status of the project, and outlined future goals.

Thank you so much to everyone who has messaged us with kind words about the game, advice and assistance and especially to those who have backed us already. A special thanks goes to Calbert Warner and Franggio C. Hogland for being our two highest pledge backers so far! If Gravia Tactics is successfully funded they'll each be receiving a copy of the very cool Physical Special Edition, two of only a thousand available - so pledge early to ensure that you don't miss out on the limited-edition, signed, hardback artbook!

We still have a long way to go if we're going to make Gravia Tactics a reality. The role-playing game is the cornerstone of PC gaming. Long before shooters or real-time strategy, the earliest PC developers replicated their tabletop RPGs on the PC, building sprawling adventures filled with orcs and wizards and foul dungeons. Those early games slowly built on their tabletop origins, and RPGs eventually became so popular, their elements spread to other genres. Here are our 25 favorites: the RPGs we’d tell anyone to play right now.

Our Criteria

Whenever we sit down to argue our way through a list of the best games, our first step is deciding what “best” even means. In this case, we’re identifying which RPGs are fun right now. Games age; they’re products of the technology they were built on, and the technology that seemed cutting edge 25 years ago may be junk today.

We value fun more than the historical significance of a game, and doing so helps us build a list that recommends what’s great today rather than publishing a popularity contest. But we don’t ignore a game’s impact completely—innovation and influence just has a lesser weight under our criteria.

The RPG genre is tough to boil down: by the most literal definition, every game is a role-playing game. This list represents our best definition of the canonical RPG—games that emphasize story; that let you inhabit a customizable character through skill points, inventory, and dialogue decisions; that include complex, controllable relationships with companions or non-playable characters. That leaves flexibility in how the game is controlled, what perspective it uses, or what setting it takes place in. Games such as Borderlands 2 or BioShock include some of those elements, but are better defined as shooters. Drawing these kinds of lines helps us provide a better service to you, we hope.

Underworld Ascension - Interview @ Eurogamer

Eurogamer has a new interview for Underworld Ascension, and talk about how Paul Neurath took 20 years to make it. It also mentions why it's not named Ultima.

Role-playing games changed forever when Ultima Underworld launched in 1992. Here was a first-person adventure set in a fully 3D simulated world - an experience like possibly no other before. Skyrim takes all the glory today but The Elder Scrolls series was still two years from appearing on shelves back then. And it's not just Bethesda's games that were inspired by Underworld: prolific and celebrated designers such as Ken Levine, Warren Spector and Richard Garriott all highly regard it - and the man in charge of Underworld, Paul Neurath, worked with most of them. Now all of a sudden he's back - and so is Underworld.

Neurath is making a new game called Underworld Ascension, a project he got the surprise nod from brand holder EA to go ahead with not long before it was announced at the beginning of July. "It was a surprise to us," Neurath tells me in an interview. "EA had the rights and I'd been having discussions with them going back 20 years about doing a new Underworld. And finally the stars aligned and I was able to get the rights to be able to move forward with the franchise."

He doesn't have the go-ahead to use the Ultima licence, he clarifies, but the original Underworld game was designed without Ultima in mind, and having no fiction to adhere to may grant more creative freedom anyway.

In the second and final part of a conversation with Josh Sawyer of Obsidian (part one), we discuss how the design of Pillars of Eternity differs from Fallout: New Vegas. That involves a discussion of New Vegas’ post-release support, official and otherwise, and the pros and cons of traditional RPG systems. Of particular note – why Pillars of Eternity does not have a Speech skill, or any other skill of that sort.

Gravia Tactics - Interview @ The G.A.M.E.S. Blog

The G.A.M.E.S. Blog posted an interview two weeks ago with the developer of Gravia Tactics Punchbag Entertainment. Here is a small sample of the interview.

Candy:  How long have you been making Gravia Tactics?

Steve: Just over a year now.  In that time we’ve built all of the development tools we’ll need, fine-tuned the plot, character concepts and proof of concept gameplay demo.  We’re about to start work on a content creation phase, so this is where we’ll be adding a lot of value to the game using those tools, systems and concepts we’ve put together.  We’re really excited because this is the phase where people are going to really start to see what Gravia’s made of.

Candy: Tell me a little bit about the plot behind Gravia Tactics. Does it draw any inspirations from other games?

Jun: To give a very general overview; the story is based in a waning ecosystem and the struggle that ensues over limited resources, involving the antagony brought about by the appearance of a mysterious new power that eclipses the old ‘sludge’ technology. Gravia is a place where almost every possible environmental disaster that we worry about today, has happened. It’s not a great place to live and mankind struggle just to continue living their frugal lives but even in this oppressive, rotting world, are souls that dare to challenge those in power and enact change. There will be hardships, villains and personal conflicts for our group of characters to face.

The plot does share some common elements and conventions that are a staple in the genre, things like the opposition of technology and nature but are rehashed to make something fresh (and did I mention summon creatures and airships?!). I wouldn’t say the plot owes to any one game, more like it is a result of our exposure to the wide range of fantasy plots from games, novels, manga and anime that came before it along with our own feelings on the state of human activity on our planet- we ought to look after it!

Steve: Yeah, we grew the plot organically without any particular game or movie or other media form as a reference point – I think there’s a danger of being too influenced by one source that way.  Like Jun says – and without giving too much away – there’s this huge social and industrial change happening that sets the backdrop for the plot and it’s definitely one element of it, but as the player and the party head out and take on the challenges of a world gone bad, there’s recurring themes of coming of age, hope versus naivety and overcoming really extreme adversity.  My favourite stories are always the really personal ones, the ones where one minute you’re laughing with the characters as they’re messing about together and the next you’re in a stunned silence because they’ve been struck by some awful misfortune, often due to their own shortcomings.

First the beginning where they compare the game to Dark Souls.

Let's get this out of the way now. Lords of the Fallen takes a whole bunch of stuff from Dark Souls. Tactical twitch combat with loads of weapons? Check. Vicious boss battles and unforgiving enemies? Check. Sprawling fantasy world complete with a tale of struggling gods and mortals? Yes and yes. The first time you sit down with CI Games' action RPG it's impossible not to notice this if you've spent the briefest amount of time with From Software's games – even the control scheme is almost identical. I'll be comparing Lords of the Fallen to Dark Souls repeatedly in this article simply because the similarities are too blatant not to mention.

Then we have the conclusion of the article with the sites verdict.

Hopefully those graphical issues will be fixed by the time the game comes out on October 31 (October 28 in North America). If they are I can see Lords of the Fallen providing a decent alternative to fans of brutal action RPG's. While it essentially copy-pastes entire mechanics from a more ambitious game, it does at least succeed in creating its own rich, over-the-top high-fantasy atmosphere. There's also a few alterations here and there that should also win over some fans left frustrated by Dark Souls' impenetrability. Could be a fun, if unoriginal, ride.

RPGWatch Feature - Konung 2 Retrospective

Fluent goes back in time to play Konung 2, which was released in 2004, to check if he feels this game is worth playing 10 years later.

So, what is Konung 2? Konung 2 is a game from 2004; the second game in the Scandinavian-themed "Konung" series of RPGs that features a blend of familiar RPG elements with a bit of settlement management, ala a simulation-style game. It's not a 50/50 split of the 2 genres, I would say it leans more towards the RPG side of the spectrum, enough so that I can safely call this a deep RPG. That said, how you actually play the game is largely up to you. You can focus more on building up your villages and protecting them, or you can largely skip those aspects of the game and focus on the RPG side. Either way, the game is expansive and the sandbox is large enough to allow you to choose your own path and define your own gameplay.

Konung 2 is an isometric, open-world RPG where you traverse a large world map that interconnects villages that have smaller, local maps. Travelling between villages is sort of a simulation style, where you click a spot on the map and you watch the icon of your group move towards it. You have to tread carefully, though, as you will more than likely get ambushed along the way. If you have a high Pathfinding skill, the chance of that happening is a bit less. You'll never truly feel overwhelmed with random encounters, unless you're traveling in a dangerous area with poor Pathfinding, in which case the random encounter amount jumps up a bit. By that time, though, you will be thankful for the fights as they help level-up your ragtag group of adventurers.

Dragon Age: Inquisition - News Roundup

RPGSite had the chance to interview Mike Laidlaw to ask him some more questions about Dragon Age: Inquisition as it gets closer to release in a few months.

RPG Site: Dragon Age II had a mixed response. To my eye, it felt like it critically did a lot better than it fared with the fans - many critics with no particularly strong feelings about the first game found it a solid title, but fans of the original game were disappointed. How do you approach a sequel with a fanbase that, in theory, is split? What do you change?

Mike Laidlaw: Well... the wild card for the whole thing is really the move to Frostbite, right? So, we're on a whole new engine, we're changing tech. When that happens, you basically have to rebuild all of your systems from the ground up. Frostbite is an amazing engine for visuals, but it is definitely not an RPG engine out of the box by any means.

As such, we had an enormous engineering challenge in front of us. It was a challenge, but it was also a very good opportunity to sit back and look at everything. To say, "Okay, what do we consider to be the defining characteristics of the Dragon Age experience?" Obviously, feedback for Dragon Age II was incorporated into that. But that aside, I think that's more about understanding what makes Dragon Age unique, what makes it stand out, rather than what did or didn't work in the previous game. 

For me personally, if I had to boil it down to a single concept, it's the party. It's not just you; you're not a solo adventurer - you are part of a team. Teamwork in gameplay is a part of that. The fact that we have a bunch of rich characters is a part of that. The fact that the follows are probably the most beloved part of Dragon Age is a part of that. It all really comes back to the party.

As such, when we sat down to look at it... we then need to examine how we make our unique features stand out even more. That realization led to some really key decisions. It's through that core understanding that we decided that, yes, although it's challenging, we were going to do a tactical camera, being able to control the whole party, the party hopefully players love, with a full overview at any time for the whole game. That really started the whole discussion because all of our ability designs needed to work both tactically and in real time.

Polygon - The Days of Owning Games Are Over

Ben Kuchera shared an opinion article on Polygon about how the days of owning games are coming to an end due to progress, and how your children won't care.

We may complain about this in the comments, but the reality of the situation is that this is the future we've built. We support this new age of limited ownership, of products that exist at the pleasure of the publishers and developers. We spend money on games and services, we prop up the minimum viable products that we like and support their ongoing development. We talk about convenience when we buy digitally, and we worry about things like pre-loading so we can play the moment the game is out, but we're ultimately discussing impermanence.

The stacks of NES games that I can still put in my system to play, the PlayStation One games that still work on my first-generation PlayStation 2, these are all relics for a time that has passed. We're not buying anymore, and EA is showing us the next step towards our rented future. This future comes with benefits, and we may save some money, but let's also understand what we're giving up, and why.

This is the way forward; the way of the future. Your kids won't mind that they don't own their games, they won't know any other reality. The rest of us will worry about what it all means, as we pay for the next piece of content that will blow away like sand the moment the Xbox Two is released, or will fade from memory as we hook up our PlayStation Fives.

In this news I'd like to share some info and concept arts of small assistant drones of the United Governments' Corps you will meet in the game.

Assistant drones are relatively small, mechanical agents, usually electro-mechanical machines that are operated by a computer program or electronic circuitry. Drones can be autonomous or semi-autonomous and range from small, pet-sized drones to massive industrial drones, or even swarms of collectively programmed drones. By mimicking a lifelike appearance or automating movements, assistant drones may convey a sense of intelligence or thoughts of their own.

Most varieties of the United Governments' drones are fueled by common variants of Fusion Cells or Microfusion Cells. Several advanced commercial models as well as military assistant drones have universal power adapters installed which grants them the ability to be powered by Plasma Cells and Microplasma Cells.

In other news, Lemmy is still hard at work on the NPCs and, specifically, NPC inter-relations. Basically, what this means is that NPCs will have the ability to form friendships and rivalries based upon their traits and in-game events. In other words, get a bunch of NPCs in a group and their relationships will be dynamic. As they learn more about one another, they may start to distrust one-another, or conversely, a bond between them may form. If you brutally murder an NPC, therefore, there may be consequences – their friends will not be super-keen on you from that point on, but their enemies may look kindly upon you. And so forth.

Lack of transparency is one of the ugliest trends in game development. Sometimes it’s necessary, sometimes even legally required, but the standard of not talking about what’s going on with development can’t help but hurt old studios and new kids alike. There are a lot of pitfalls in this industry. It’s a shame to see people falling into the same ones again and again.

There are people out there setting up Kickstarters who have no idea what they’re doing or how they’ll allocate the money. Sometimes these people get nothing – or sometimes they get hundreds of thousands of dollars. When these teams fail, their follow-ups tend to be face-saving PR statements or grave silence, depending on which is more fiscally advisable. And thus, the way is cleared for another generation of well-intentioned misappropriations.

When we at Pyrodactyl Games launched our Kickstarter last June, we promised that we’d give our backers and the general public a frank postmortem. Now, we never did get in over our heads. We made mistakes, and to some extent I think you can argue we were in over our heads to begin with, but we managed to deliver a game we’re proud of. But we saw a lot of ways this project could have gone south, and part of what we’re here to accomplish is to make sure future teams deliver as well. This report comes from thirteen months in the trenches; it is based on experience.

But this post isn’t just for indie devs, and it’s not just for our backers: it’s for anyone who considers backing a game in the future. Before you support a project, it’s important that you know what money does for indies and what making a game with a small studio looks like. This is something that even the press sometimes doesn’t understand, if some of the questions we’ve gotten are any indication.

Status update #2

We have to let you know that the big July update we announced earlier won't be coming — instead, it's going to become even bigger and land in August. We'll share the reasons behind this decision, as well our current work progress, below:

Boarding. We think that boarding is the heart of combat gameplay, even more important than sea battles. The current version of the boarding fights stopped being satisfactory for us a long time ago, and as a result we're redoing it from scratch.

Graphic quality of the boarding locations was too poor compared to the character models so all ships are being completely redone. Besides the evident difference in textures, we redesigned level geometry: got rid off jamming on decks and unnecessary rooms, made the movement on ships more clear and free for the player. We also added crow's nests on masts, to provide riflemen with additional spots.

Plus we'll try to add some new animations, including the classic boarding jump rope.

Naval combat. The second most important element of the game. We're still torn between which path to choose: making everything more simple and arcady or adding more options for strategy and control. But our internal tests showed that either way we'd need to deal with current small locations. Right now gameplay functions well only with 2 vs. 2 ship battles. Our limit is 12 ships on the scene, and with that amount of ships there's very little room for everyone in the sea. Making the location bigger is a challenge as we have to work around the engine's limitations. So for now our programmer added a 'spyglass' option that many of you asked for. More significant updates in this area should be coming in September.

Trading and economy. Initially it was supposed to be a side gameplay element, but we want to increase its importance in the game. Actually, working on economy takes more time than anything else at the moment as we keep changing some basic things in M&B engine. For example, right now we separate player's personal inventory and his cargo. It's not very convenient and logical to carry not only a set of 12 breastplates but two tons of cacao as well. Another new element is building construction in the towns — there's so much to do here that we won't even dare to promise it done by August.

Strategic map. We got a lot of feedback on geography of our map and its flaws. Apologies for the inaccuracies — that was our first try to befriend realism with gaming. In August we'll do our best to finish the new world map, more accurate and, possibly, far more attractive.

The plans are pretty ambitious for us, and we hope we can implement all of this with no problem. After the August update we'll be ready to switch to the next big step — refining land battles and implementing city sieges.

The final release of The Red Solstice needs to fix some AI and pacing issues, as well as improve the voice acting (which is presently annoying, repetitive, and often out-of character), but all in all this early build provides an impressive foundation. It’s good fun with friends, and in an age of endless first-person shooters, I’m happy to see alternatives that force my buddies and I to co-operate rather than slaughter each other mindlessly.
