Dragon Age: Inquisition - Video Roundup

by Couchpotato, 05:53

Lady Insanity was at Pax Prime this week, and posted three new videos. The first video is a preview of the new Dragon Age Keep from Bioware that imports game data.

Welcome to the latest version of Dragon Age Keep! A guide that helps you choose the decisions you made in Dragon Age: Origins and 2, and re-experience your decisions.

This will be the same presentation that PAX attendees will see, but Bioware wanted to make sure that YOU get to see it as well. Thanks again to Bioware!

Her second video is a conversation with Bioware from Pax Prime 2014.

We give our feedback and they share some light into the development of Keep and things moving forward.

And her final video is about the new Co-op multi-player mode.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance - AAA As An Indie

by Couchpotato, 05:47

Making Games has posted a new article for Kingdom Come: Deliverance with Creative Director Daniel Vavra about the dark side of AAA production.

Building a AAA medieval game as an Indie studio is tough. Experience and passion won’t do the trick alone. Simply put: you need money! A lot of money!

Our original plan for Kingdom Come was to develop a prototype in 15 months and show it to all the publishers. Given our original commencement day this was supposed to fall on September/October 2012. Unfortunately, there were some delays when starting the company, and the deadline shifted to Christmas 2012. We didn’t realize at first that you can’t actually sell anything but trees, turkeys and trinkets at this time of the year. We shifted our deadline to February and that gave us space to improve the thing (and it also cost us some extra money).

In the end we moved the presentation till after Christmas which gave us more time to improve the planned features and add some extras. We created more cutscenes and dialogues than we originally planned, we had a completely functional GUI and map, and we even had details like accurate item pick up: the character will actually correctly grab the item it is picking up. I was really proud about our final build because it contained almost 100 per cent of what planned for it, looked very good and didn’t crash (almost).

Hard West - Stretch Goal #2 Reached

by Couchpotato, 05:43

It's time for good news again as PlayWay has released a new update for Hard West with information the second stretch goal was made, and reveals the next two.

Stretch goal #2 reached, stretch goals #4 and #5 revealed!

Owing to your backing, Hard West will now feature 2 additional scenarios.

That means not 6+ hours of gameplay, but 8+ hours of gameplay!

This is a great occasion to reveal 2 more stretch goals.

For one, we have received a lof of positive feedback about the +2 scenarios goal. Let's push it some more - if we reach C$100 000, we will add 2 more scenarios, bringing the number to a round number of 10 scenarios and 10+ hours of gameplay.

Second, there have been a lot of questions regarding playing together. We didn't want to make a far stretch, but at the same time wanted to make a base for a probable full-fledged multiplayer. Hence - if we reach C$115 000, we will add a hotseat-style multiplayer.

The exact form of this local multiplayer will yet to be determined - be it coop, taking turns, or an additional game mode.

Lords of the Fallen - Hands-On @ Dual Pixels

by Couchpotato, 05:40

Dual Pixels is the next site to have a preview from Pax Prime 2014 this time based on a demo of Lords of the Fallen based on two different opinions.

Jose: The preview build’s difficulty seemed very high, but it made the experience even better because the difficulty didn’t come from the fact that the enemies were health sponges but you had to strategize how you would approach every encounter. It seemed like the game was asking you: “hey you want to be a show off, well lets see you show off dodging skills.”

Eliot: In the demo I played I only encountered two different types of enemies, a scrawny member of the undead and a larger miniboss. As I mentioned, I was stuck in pretty tight confines throughout the demo, so strategy was reduced to dodging backwards in between the enemy’s swings. There was some relief from the linearity  when I entered a courtyard and met that gnarly looking miniboss only to see him plunge through a wooden grating covering a bottomless well.

Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms - Meet Urshak

by Couchpotato, 05:36

The website for Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms has been updated with a new character update for Urshak the Ishkai. Here are the details of the new character.

Urshak

The Ishkai are a race of small goblins, who for millennia have been oppressed and enslaved by their distant relatives, the Surakai and Sura tribes. As a consequence of the Accession Wars, the Ishkai were granted the opportunity to overthrow their oppressors. Reunited and strengthened the Ishkai now reside in their own territory north of Corwenth called the Ishkai Confederacy.

One of these Ishkai is a loner and outcast with a mysterious past whose skills and steely demeanor make him a formidable foe and a valuable ally. Using both his bow and his wits, Urshak dominates his enemies from a distance with skills far surpassing those of his fellow Ishkai.

Urshak has been dead for almost 30 years now.

Zpocalypse: Survival - August Update

by Couchpotato, 05:28

Jeff Gracia of Greenbrier Games has posted a new update for the failed kickstarter Zpocalypse: Survival about the next relaunch of the game.

August Update

Hello once again from the depths of development land! You know there is that saying “No news is good news” and that is the case here! We are steadily moving along getting the game to an early alpha state that we feel will make for something that we can really push out to the press and get some more buzz for the re-launch of the Kickstarter. Tentatively we are looking at October for the re-launch.

Before we delve into the updates I wanted to tell you all about an exciting opportunity! We are looking for a handful of dedicated early alpha testers to help provide feedback on the current state of the game before we go back up on Kickstarter in a couple months. The objective is to get some fresh eyes on the project before we start putting it out for further marketing in preparation for the Kickstarter. If you are really excited about this project, have the time and patience to test and report bugs and want to help make it a great success then please stop by our forums and tell us a little more about yourself.

So with that let’s delve into what has been going on over the last month. First off we have added a new perks and effects system. During our pre-alpha we had 3 different classes but for the alpha we are only focusing on one class, the fighter. The fighter class now has its skill tree built out for the first five levels allowing you to get a taste for the simple leveling mechanics that allow for some variability between your survivors. The great thing with this new system is that it was built not just for talent trees but also for item effects as well. Also, as with everything else we are doing, this was designed with moding in mind and gives a lot of freedom to the content designer. Once we get the tools and interfaces in place this will be another great way for the community to enhance and expand the game post release. Currently about a fourth of the functionality for the planned effect types is in place but it already gives us a huge range of flexibility with what kind of unit and item effects we can add to the game.

Dark Souls II - Old Iron King DLC Review

by Couchpotato, 05:24

IncGamers Peter Parrish posted a new review of the new Dark Souls 2: Crown of the Old Iron King DLC, and gave it a final score aof 9/10. Here is a small sample of why.

Crown of the Sunken King showed that the Dark Souls 2 team were willing and able to address level design criticisms, and Old Iron King furthers this commitment to more expressive structures in its ashen and vertically themed environment. It also provides two tense and challenging boss fights, alongside (mostly) interesting enemy placement. There are infrequent missteps along the way, but in the main Crown of the Old Iron King shows FromSoft are capable of nudging the bar higher in the difficulty arms race without resorting to underhand tricks.

Legends of Dawn - Rewards Now Available

by Couchpotato, 05:16

Aurofinity & Dreamatrix have a new update for Legends of Dawn with news almost a year after release that downloadable rewards are now available for backers.

Legends Of Dawn - downloadable rewards now available!

Dear Backers,

Digital rewards ready to go, physical rewards coming soon!

Yes, rest of digital rewards that you've all waited so patiently for are here, and can be downloaded at:

https://www.humblebundle.com/store/keyresender

(enter the same email address that you backed with)

Important (physical rewards): Did your address change?

Thanks everyone for sending us your change of addresses for physical rewards but please update us again with your new shipping address, to ensure that your copy of game or Collector Box will be sent out to the right place! We have not yet sent out any physical rewards. We’re set to move on to packaging and sending, as soon as we get the information about the change of address - so hurry up!

Dreamatrix went through a really exciting Kickstarter adventure which resulted in a great success. The most important parts of that success are you and Legends of Dawn. With your amazing support, our dream of completely funding Legends of Dawn, and releasing it to market became reality.

Although we released the game (digital download) relatively quickly, we sincerely apologize to you for the delay in delivery of the rest of KS rewards. KS is a very caring and generous community and we love the concept that many hands make things possible.

We weren't able to finish the huge pre-press work by the specified deadline. As a small indie team we did not have necessary experience nor the connections. One of the bigger challenges was to find printing companies willing to make small batch of materials for reasonable price. Despite all this, the materials are now ready. We are happy to be able to finally deliver rewards that we promised. For those of you who had to wait so long for some of the rewards we prepared additional rewards which differ depending on tier.

We appreciate your trust, and we’ll do our very best to retain your trust by making great games you love. We gave huge amount of love and work in our products, so we really hope you will enjoy Legends of Dawn and our future games. Please, don't hesitate to let us know how you like the game to our support@dreamatrix.net email address.

Shroud of the Avatar - Preview @ Joystiq

by Couchpotato, 05:10

Joystiq posted a short hands-on preview of Shroud of the Avatar from PaxPrime 2014.

The team is currently working to polish up the current game, although additional world builders have been hired to beef up Shroud's PvE content and add a lot more dungeons. Promotions are planned to call burned-out testers back into the game, and efforts are being made to get players together in a spread-out world so that everyone doesn't get too lonely and isolated.

Features are all well and good, but what I really wanted to do was to watch the fireflies dance around more. Sometimes it's the little things that evoke wonder, y'know?

Hellraid - Video Interview @ Eurogamer

by Couchpotato, 06:16

Eurogamer has a new ten minute video interview of Hellraid with Producer Marcin Kruczkiewicz of Techland with some new gameplay footage.

Techland are a busy bunch, aren't they? While they're not working on Dead Island's first sequel proper, they are working on the similarly themed (and quite grand looking) Dying Light, as well as producing the digital-only hack and slash fantasy game Hellraid. It originally started out as a mode for Dead Island (thanks Wikipedia!) but now is its own standalone game for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Beyond that I'll admit to being largely clueless, so Ian Higton's primer and interview with producer Marcin Kruczkiewicz came in quite handy. Oh, here it is right now!

Witcher 3 - Preview @ Gamers Post

The game is coming out next year, 2015 on 25th February, because of the delay by the studio. CD Project wanted to make the experience deeper and richer and that’s why they wanted to have more time for working on the game.

The game looks really fantastic and the dynamic combat looks awesome too. All the characters in the world react similarly as the ones in Skyrim, they have day and nighttime activities. The graphics looks beautifully crafted.

We are really looking forward for this one! Maybe an upcoming Masterpiece?

Seven Dragon Saga - New Images & Description

by Couchpotato, 05:50

TSI Games has updated the website for Seven Dragon Saga with more images, and a brief description of the new RPG game. The kickstarter should start at a later date.

Seven Dragon Saga allows the player to create and customize a full party of adventurers and maneuver them in detailed, turn-based tactical combat. You won’t find any rat-hunting farmers here- characters begin with a suite of talents. Rather, the characters are ‘Touched by the winds of chaos’, and destined for great successes or spectacular demises. Explore a rich world, uncover lost treasures, deal with challenging social and political situations.

The player’s choices alter the world in meaningful ways, both physically and socially. Sent by the Empire of the Seven Dragons to the minor Kingdom of Afelon, the party must uncover who is driving the land to civil war and whether that conspiracy might pose a threat to the Empire at large. What mysteries lie in the surrounding, monster-infested peaks? Who is worthy of trust and who only of death?

Meriwether - Labor Day Twitch Stream

by Couchpotato, 05:42

Sortasoft has finally updated the kickstarter page for Meriwether with news the developer will be hosting a new Twitch.TV stream on Labor day.

Back by popular demand, Carlos and Josh will be streaming Meriwether live on Twitch tomorrow at 6pm eastern. Why, you ask? Last month we had some technical problems and our stream never got recorded. We're going to play through the character creation again, but even if you were watching last time, we'll be picking different options to keep it fresh. Because the game is so text-heavy, in order to prevent "dead air", we did our best to act out the parts--Josh (poorly) taking on the role of Lewis, and Carlos (less poorly) playing everyone else. It was pretty fun and we'll do that again. We'll send a reminder tomorrow right before we go live and then send out the recorded link after we're finished.

Diablo 3 - New Season Now Live

by Couchpotato, 05:14

Battle.net announces the first season is now live for Diablo III, and it offers the chance to compete for the best times to level up a newly made character.

Season Now Live

Diablo III Season 1 is now live in all gameplay regions! To create a Seasonal hero, select your class, gender, and name as usual, then select the "Seasonal Hero" checkbox on the lower left of the screen.

What Are Seasons?

Seasons are an optional, recurring game mode that offers PC players the opportunity to periodically start fresh, leveling new Normal or Hardcore heroes from level 1 without any currency, resources, items, or previously earned Paragon experience. Similar to the separation between Normal and Hardcore game modes, Seasonal heroes will also have their own shared stash and Artisan progression. Any currency, materials, recipes, items, Paragon experience, and Artisan progression earned during a Season will be rolled over to a player's non-Seasonal profile once the Season concludes.

Seasons offer unique rewards and new challenges for players, including new Legendaries, an exclusive Transmogrification set only available to those who compete in each Season, and new achievements called Conquests. Progress within a given Season will also be tracked in our new Leaderboard system.

Neo Scavenger - Test Build 0.9936b Released

by Couchpotato, 04:41

Blue Bottle Games released another Beta build for Neo Scavenger players to test this week, and here is the information straight from the games website.

Looks like the game is slowly reaching 1.0 status.

Updates Included in the Test Beta

Test beta 0.9936b includes the following changes:

  • Added recipe for lit smudge stick.
  • Added code to prevent AI looting important hex objects.
  • Changed "Search" move to start weak, and to stack effects over time.
  • Changed UVDs to degrade silently.
  • Changed "Reveal Self" move to require AI Intelligence, so animals don't do it.
  • Changed confiscation box to have more space and arrange items largest-first, to reduce lost items.
  • Fixed a bug that caused Blue Rot 2 recursion.
  • Fixed a bug that prevented bags from going into travois.
  • Fixed a bug in Creature.DropItem that re-added same object instead of remainder.
  • Fixed a bug that caused overflowing item stacks to sometimes be missing overflow item sprite.
  • Fixed typos in Merga Wraith/Realm encounters.

Most of these changes were to stabilize issues found in the most recent build. In particular, infinite Blue Rot 2 and hiding/searching taking too many turns to work. These changes should hopefully smooth out that roughness.

As always, let me know what you think of the changes, and if you notice any issues with the new build!

Transistor - The Art of Transistor

by Couchpotato, 04:30

of Cliqist has a new article where she talks about the art of Transistor.

I’ve played Bastion and I enjoyed it, but I had not taken a peek at Transistor yet. I knew I had to, even if it was only for the watercolor painted style that I had also love about Bastion. Even if you don’t like action RPG’s, you should really try Transistor, because the art style, the story and the music are amazing. I’m not going to go into all those things because we already have, I’m just here to show you how incredibly stunning this game looks.

All the scenes are a simple build up out of three layers; the background layer, central layer (where you run, shoot and experience everything), and the foreground layer. When running around the background and foreground layer move with you and add some life to the environment. Sometimes you come across a flock of white doves who fly up if you come near them. Together with the bright colors it makes for a festive eyesight.

State of Decay - Year One Survival Edition

by Couchpotato, 04:24

Undead Labs announce a new Year One Survival Edition of State of Decay that will be released for PC , and Xbox One. It's supposed to have more content & features.

Man, it felt good to write that. There’s a huge difference between “We think it’s a good idea and we’re seriously considering it”, and “Hell yes, we’re working hard on it right now.” It’s generally a good idea to wait until you can say “hell yes”, because until then, Things Can Change, but we’ve crossed that threshold for State of Decay on Xbox One.

State of Decay is coming to Xbox One via the State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition. While we’re still very much in development, here’s what I can tell you today.

First, we’re remastering the game in glorious 1080p, with sharper textures, a refined user interface, and more environment detail. We’re also taking advantage of the more powerful hardware by remastering and adding new environment effects, and increasing the fidelity and smoothness of character and zombie animations throughout the game. And along with these visual enhancements, we’ll ensure the game runs at a rock-solid frame rate and polish out a few glitches along the way.

Next, we’re creating some new content — not an entire DLC’s worth, but a few cool new mission types, new weapons, vehicles, and perhaps a hero or two. We’ll also be making some of your favorite characters from Lifeline (yes, Sasquatch) available as playable characters in Breakdown, and taking some of the new base options from Lifeline and making them available in Breakdown and the core State of Decay game. And then we’ll throw in half an hour of new music from State of Decay composer Jesper Kyd.

Finally, we’re bundling both Breakdown and Lifeline DLC releases into the game to create the ultimate State of Decay experience.

Pantheon - Progress Update & Video

by Couchpotato, 04:17

Visionary Realms Brad McQuaid released a new work-in-progress video for Pantheon.

Video showing latest development progress, including database-driven NPC population, polished zones, and original music. Make sure you set it to 1080p!

He also released a new progress update a day after the video.

Wasn't that video update fantastic?  This team we have built is composed of some awesome and very hard working people. Please give a big round of applause to all the team members who have poured out their time, their energy and sacrificed a fair amount of sleep to make this happen.  They are doing such a great job and giving so much of themselves to bring this game together and we are ever thankful for the time they have contributed to this project.

We have had a lot of new additions to the team, so many that we have now closed applications to the Lore team nor we are seeking any more music composers presently. We are only accepting applications for exceptionally talented (ie: extensive experience with) Unity 3D programmers, worldbuilders, and 3D artists. If you or someone you know qualifies in one of these categories please send us a PM here on the website or send us an email and we will proceed from there. Thank you to everyone who has expressed interest. We are so thankful to each one of you for your passion and dedication to helping us create Pantheon.

Heroes of a Broken Land - Review @ Chalgyr

by Couchpotato, 04:14

Chalgyr's Game Room has posted one of the few reviews available for Heroes of a Broken Land. and he came away enjoying the time he spent playing the game.

The score was 7.5/10 , and site calls the game good.

A stronger narrative coupled with better presentation values could have made Heroes of a Broken Land an absolutely unforgettable experience, but what is there is still really, really good. It blends genres beautifully and creates a unique-feeling experience in the process, which is capable of being played time and time again due to its randomized world.

Dragon Fin Soup - Gamescom & PAX Prime

by Couchpotato, 04:06

The Grimm Bros next kickstarter update for Dragon Fin Soup has informatiion about the game from Gamescom & PAX Prime. Here are the details.

Gamescom & PAX Prime Madness!

Apologies for the delayed update, it’s been an incredibly busy time for us this entire month. Grimm Bros just wrapped up presenting Dragon Fin Soup at the debut IndieMEGABOOTH at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, and now we are back in the United States hustling to get our booth ready in time to present at PAX Prime!

Gamescom Report

Gamescom is one of the largest gaming conventions in the entire world. This 2014 convention hosted over 400,000 attendees (holy crap)! The Grimm Bros team had over 40+ meetings with European press featuring hands-on demos and interviews, including 2 video interviews! We were booked non-stop for five days from 10am-8pm with not only press, but fellow backers, devs, and our amazing gaming community.

Our time at Gamescom was a mix between a collaborative and inspiring experience presenting amongst cool indie devs who share a common love of games. We were able to exchange ideas, talk shop, hang out, and have a bit of fun as well. There was a great feeling of all of us being a part of the indie collective and helping one another out.
