K2 Network has sent out a press release announcing a new expansion pack for Sword of the New World entitled "The Land of the Dead". Below is the press release in its entirety:

IRVINE, Calif.– March 28, 2008– K2 Network, Inc. (www.k2network.net), a global games publisher, announces K2 Network’s game portal Gamersfirst.com has launched an expansion for its Free2Play epic Age of Exploration MMORPG Sword of the New World: Granado Espada, entitled The Land of the Dead!

This new expansion adds new monsters, new stances, new skills and a slew of new features including: A whole new PvP Enabled map for players to explore, a new level of equipment: 92 Elites, 2 highly anticipated UPCs (Unique Player Characters): Kurt and Eduardo, and a host of Cash Shop additions including Andre’s Dolce and Granado Beachwear, the brand new Polisher system and Devil Wings.

Sword of the New World gives players more options, variety, entertainment and challenges than any other MMORPG can by virtue of its unique design features. With multi-character control (MCC), players are able to command up to three characters simultaneously. No longer limited to playing one character at a time, players can instantly switch between their favorite character classes or control them all at once; the pace of battle is swift and exciting in both player vs. environment (PvE) and player vs. player (PvP) combat. Sword of the New World features a bold, original art direction inspired by the supremacy of Europe’s Baroque period. Striking graphics make this title as thrilling to look at as it is to play, and the game’s brilliant design allows it to run on a variety of systems.

Sword of the New World - Review @ Gameplay Monthly

by Inauro, 20:47

Gameplay Monthly reviews Sword of the New World and concludes:

Though far from perfect, Sword of the New World is a fun and fairly different MMORPG. It probably wouldn't be worth a monthly fee, if only because it's severe lack of polish and poor translation, but for the price (basically free until you hit level 100) it's a bargain.

At the very least, I think it's worth a look. I've found it to be a lot of fun, but then I'm still pretty low level. Since it's free, it's not like you have anything to lose, except the time to download the client (which is something like 3.7 gigs).

There is an upcoming "expansion", and the company behind this promises it will fix a lot of the nagging features people have complained about (translation, bots, lack of high level stuff), though whether or not it actually does will remain to be seen.

Sword of the New World - Review @ GamingExcellence

by Inauro, 21:17

GamingExcellence awards Sword of the New World a score of 8.2 and concludes:

Overall, Sword of the New World was a fantastically fun MMO to play. While not as intricate as some other MMOs, the dynamic of having three characters to control instead of just one is a lot of fun and definitely gives the player a lot of things to do and learn throughout his/her experience.

Sword of the New World - New In-Game Event

by Inauro, 22:56

K2 Network has announced a new in-game event for players of Sword of the New World.

IRVINE, Calif. – (October 11, 2007) – K2 Network, Inc. (www.k2network.net), an online game publisher today announced details of the exciting new experience within its epic Age of Exploration MMORPG Sword of the New World: Granado Espada.

Sword of the New World: Granado Espada, the heroic MMORPG, has more to offer than initially meets the eye. Delve deeper and while you become immersed in its breathtaking graphics, large scale maps, a game full of surprises and mysteries will unfold. Hidden dangers, treasures and fame present themselves to those that seek to become one with the world, and profit and advancement by some unusual means will follow!

As recalled by Ambassador Vartigus, an intriguing and poignant tale tells of Captain Sharffenberger, a smart and wealthy man courted by royalty who wanted him to marry one of their daughters. His heart however belonged to another, a love from his youth who was never forgotten. Adelaide Rosecraft captured his heart and they forged an unrivaled unity but she was sent to a far away land never to meet again. Their last night together they embraced passionately and both vowed never to forget each other…

Roderick Sharffenberger followed in his father’s business and in his thirties he became captain of his very own ship, St. Augustine, left by his father. Throughout all these years he kept the eternal secret close to his heart and never gave up his endless search for his true love. Then unexpectedly he received a letter from Adelaide expressing her desire to meet him at Porto Bello. He hastily sets sail but a dark storm engulfed his vessel and while the sea raged, he made a pact with the darkness, to grant him and his crew life so that he may see Adelaide one last time.

Though his intentions were good, compromising with the dark side of life could reap no real rewards and now Sharffenberger roams the sea, undead! Coming ashore, looking for his lost love, he kills, unmercifully everything that stands in his path.

This sad but poignant event to some, takes place 3 times a day on every world for gamers to become part of. There are different level ranges for the event but all players can log in and participate. When Captain Sharffenberger dies he drops loot and random players who participate are awarded costumes (items that change their character’s appearance) for their efforts.

Sword of the New World - Interview @ MMORPG.com

by Inauro, 23:45

Peter Cesario, the Director of Product Development for K2 Networks, talks to MMORPG.com about the switch to a free-to-play model for Sword of the New World.

They also wanted to make sure that the Item Shop is handled properly, making sure that none of the items in the shop are game-breakers.

"It's not a good idea," he said, "to sell advantages."

With that in mind, I asked him about the way that the game's players have responded to the change. He told me that so far, the player feedback has been fairly positive. That being said though, he also added that it's "hard to please everyone, no matter what you do."

Still, according to Cesario, they didn't run head-long into this decision without discussing it with their players. They ran polls of their player base, and the free-to-play model won "overwhelmingly". Cesario attributes it to K2's previous reputation:

"K2's customers have come to recognize that K2 is Free-to-Play."

Sword of the New World - Review @ Games Extreme

by Inauro, 23:14

Games Extreme reviews Sword of the New World and concludes:

Despite my criticism SOTNW does have a certain elegant charm to it. It is an enjoyable game though it doesn’t capture the feel that game like World of Warcraft and Guild wars do. Eventually the game does start to become a grind fest, even at its high points I never felt completely involved with the game. This is a real shame because some parts of the games work so very well. As the game is free to download and play up to level 20 I would recommend that any MMO fan gives it a try.

Sword of the New World - K2 Changes Business Model

by Inauro, 23:17

K2 Network has announced it is changing the Sword of the New World business model to free-to-play.  The official site has more.

Q: Why did K2 decide to forgo monthly subscriptions?

K2 is committed to building a strong community for Sword of the New World. We believe that making Sword of the New World Free2Play is the best way to achieve that objective.

Sword of the New World - Review @ Ten Ton Hammer

by Inauro, 23:25

Ten Ton Hammer has put together an informative and balanced review of Sword of the New World.

Though the multi-character control system is a terrific evolutionary step in the growth of MMOGs, the combat and questing system in Sword has some significant hurdles for Western players to get over. In general, the combat is very auto-attack oriented in its style; you can choose to do very little actual hotkey work if you choose to. Even with this, the grind in the game is obviously still included, even though K2 has improved it significantly from what it was. Questing is also quite laborious compared to contemporary styles in North American games like World of Warcraft. Quest directions are pretty sparse, and even in some of the earlier quests I found myself completely clueless on what to do next.

Sword of the New World - Review @ YouGamers

by Inauro, 01:41

YouGamers spends some time with Sword of the New World and finds it not to their taste.

So, if you seek another hack & slash game and enjoy grinding endless piles of unimaginative monsters, each killable in one or two hits and have an uncontrollable urge to roll alts, drooling at the prospect of thirty six characters, Sword of the New World: Granado Espada might offer something for you. Those not so enticed by endless grinding are better served by any number of western MMO offerings. The whole game design philosophy is so radically different that you will probably either totally love or utterly hate this game. I hated it, and the odds are most of you will too. On the upside it's free to try out, and it runs on almost any PC, so by all means, give it a go if you've not experienced this style of game before.

Sword of the New World - Review @ Games32.com

by Inauro, 23:28

Games32.com awards Sword of the New World a respectable score of 75/100.

After the characters are created, you can only use three of them at a time, but you can add or exclude them as you see fit. Until now, most on the online games allowed you to control only one character. This way they believed that you will form a bond with your character. The drawback was the need to form groups in order to overcome powerful enemies. With this feature, you team will become a deadly squad.

Sword of the New World - Review @ 2404

by Inauro, 23:14

2404 awards Sword of the New World a very respectable 7.5/10.

The first thing to set this game apart is the location. Breaking free of the criminally overdone “fantasy pseudo-Europe” setting, Sword takes players to the new world, circa the 17th century. Yes, there are many strong fantasy elements, and certainly a European cast to the architecture and social structure, but we’re closer to the Napoleonic Era than the Crusades, and it shows. A player sees this right away when he rolls up characters, in a family home as well decorated as Versailles. While generating a character is little more choosing name, class, and costume, the latter is when the game starts to shine, with rich clothing choices wonderfully representative of an era when beautiful textiles were no longer exclusive to the highest nobility.

Sword of the New World - Review @ Frictionless Insight

by Inauro, 03:00

Frictionless Insight reviews Sword of the New World and concludes:

If the game delivered on its promise of dragging me into its tale of epic war spilling over into the New World, peppered with religious controversy and loyalist predicaments, I'd be thrilled. Instead, the rich setting is eked out in dribbles, sometimes in unintelligible English, so I have to work really hard to figure out what's going on – and work even harder to care. When it comes to tearing into monsters, Sword of the New World is solid, but no more so than plenty of other fantasy-themed games, online and otherwise.

Sword of the New World - Interview @ Ten Ton Hammer

by Inauro, 23:21

Ten Ton Hammer talks to Peter Cesario, Producer of Sword of the New World, about the game's recent launch.

Peter wasn’t surprised by the question regarding the release of Sword of the New World, and he was fairly frank about the whole situation. “It’s gone fairly well,” he said. “One of the things that hurt us concerning release was the fact that we launched the same day as E3. And E3 this year garnered even more interest because it was in a new venue and the focus of the expo had changed. When E3 hits, people shift their focus on to what’s new and what’s upcoming, not so much what’s just released.

Sword of the New World - Reviews @ TrustedReviews & GameSlave

by Inauro, 23:19

GameSlave and TrustedReviews consider imcGames and K2 Networks latest offering, Sword of the New World.

GameSlave

The fighting is fierce - fighter characters will be constantly hacking in elaborate twirls and stabs, gunmen will blaze off thousands of rounds in each dungeon, and magic users will be the centre of a veritable disco inferno of energy beams and fire bolts. The intensity and body count of dungeon raids really puts the crunchy combat goodness back into the MMORPG. As long as the fight is still going to plan, the player will concentrate on inventory and health management, the right timing of specials, and the position of the fighters - with the actual repetitive aiming and slashing done for you. It's a testament to good balancing that this takes out much of the tedium without disconnecting you from the action. Swapping weapons whilst in the field will automatically swap the character to the required style and reassign the hotkeys to the relevant special powers - an example of a simple design feature that can make all the difference to uninterrupted game play and taking the grind out of basic character management.

TrustedReviews

To be honest, my first half-hour in Sword of the New World didn’t give me hope for anything more this time around. Point-and-click controls and a dumb, floating, right-mouse button controlled camera give the game the unfortunate feel of a B-grade offline RPG. The game seems full of pitiful attempts to build atmosphere, not to mention some rotten translations that constantly have you asking “What? Why? How? The game seems disjointed, and it’s unclear where you have to go and what you have to do. As I struggled through the tutorial missions one July morning, I thought K2 Networks would be lucky if I bothered playing past the first hour.

At approximately 1.30am that night the joke was on me. Once you get into it – and it does take a little getting into – Sword of the New World is a refreshingly different fantasy MMO.

Sword of the New World - Review @ Bit-tech.net

by Inauro, 23:12

Bit-tech.net reviews the recently launched Sword of the New World.

So, is Sword of the New World a legitimately decent game or is it simply yet another cutesy MMO to be populated by WoW rejects and RPGing acronym addicts? Is the fact that it’s free to play a clever marketing tool, or a useless and pointless effort to hook otherwise stingy players? These are the questions we want answered, so we set forward to try and find out just how grand this espada really is, or something.

Sword of the New World - First Look @ MMORPG.com

by Inauro, 23:04

With the release of Sword of the New World we can expect a flood of reviews in the coming months.  One of the first out of the gate is MMORPG.com with a first look.

The game is very fast paced and the mobs respawn very quickly, forcing you to be quick on your feet (or rather, your mouse as the game is click to move). If you don't move out of the area quickly after killing mobs, you will probably end up dead yourself. The fast pace is easy to adjust to and in the end makes you feel quite powerful. I was able to blow through most mobs very quickly and easily if I didn't stay in one area too long. My favorite class has been the wizard and musketeer. The wizard seems to just reek of power and can pretty much crumble anything that comes its way, and the musketeer, well I just like the gun animation, and to see the mob go flying across the screen after it has been shot.

Sword of the New World - Preview @ Ten Ton Hammer

by Inauro, 23:09

Also previewing Sword of the New World is Ten Ton Hammer.

In most other MMORPGs, you rely upon your singular character to provide you with a sense of uniqueness in the game. Sword of the New World takes that concept and turns it on its head. Rather than create one character “persona”, you create a “family” where all of your characters are branded with your selected surname. For example, if you select the name “Longrunner”, all of your characters will have the Longrunner surname (Micajah Longrunner, Ethec Longrunner, Boomjack Longrunner, etc.). To a degree, this takes away some of the sting you might feel in any other game. Just change out a character if you’re getting tired of your selected group.

EuroGamer previews Sword of the New World.

When you first load up Sword of the New World (or Granado Espada, as it was known in Korea and is now subtitled in the west), you are presented with your "Barracks" - an opulent room decorated in a 17th century Baroque style, around which the various characters you have created lounge, stand, sit or generally bum about. As you click on the characters you want to bring with you today, they straighten up and walk forwards to wait in front of you; you can pick any three characters you like to join your party, or create a new one if you so desire.

Sword of the New World - Interview @ MPOGD

by Inauro, 23:05

MPOGD chats with Operations Producer Peter Cesario about the upcoming MMO, Sword of the New World.

MPOGD: What was it about Sword of the New World that attracted you as a publisher?

Peter: It has a really unique feel and position in the marketplace, both in terms of the game play and feature sets, and in terms of the consumer model. We can essentially give the consumer some incredible access to the game, to the play, to the overall experience that is quite robust with little barrier for involvement (both in terms of economics and time invested), our goal being to engage them in a way that is much more than just a trial, one that we hope will lead to a greater investment and commitment to the game.

Sword of the New World - Interview @ The Game Musketeers

by Inauro, 23:06

Peter Cesario, Producer for Sword of the New World, speaks to The Game Musketeers about his company's MMO.

How will the Multi Character Control System affect the PvE and PvP?

We feel that MCC will have an extremely positive affect on both PvE and PvP, in that this will be the first time player's wont necessarily have to worry about sitting around in town waiting for a healer for their group since they can bring their own along! On the PvP side, MCC allows for more diversity and strategic elements than ever seen before in an MMO. For instance, when dueling someone, you have to prepare for not only the three individual classes they're using, but how those three work together - Mage, Wizard, Fighter? Three Elementalists? Add in the fact that each class can specialize in any number of stances, and the combinations and strategies are endless!

Sword of the New World - Dev Diary @ Ten Ton Hammer

by Inauro, 23:17

Hak Kyu Kim, Producer of Sword of the New World, sheds some light on the game's multi-control character system.

This week, I’d like to highlight one of the most unique features in Sword of the New World - the Multi-Control Character (MCC) system.  What inspired the development of the MCC system is I wanted to deliver what most MMO’s were lacking, which is the opportunity to party play.

When the user wants to party play in the game, they will have to open several clients to create different characters in one game and play with all of the characters together.  So, the original RPG party play problem is solved because users would be required to form a team with different character roles.  That was the thinking behind my development for the game.

Sword of the New World - The Elementalist

by Inauro, 01:14

K2 Network has released more details about the Elementalist class from Sword of the New World .

The Elementalist

The Elementalist draws from three natural elements: fire, ice and lightning. There are also three tiers of stances, each tier more powerful than the previous one: the first level is possession; the second level is evocation; and the third level is domination. Additionally, there is a Lord stance where all three elements are combined, and this class also offers elemental resistance buffs. As we explored Sword of the New World, we quickly realized the importance of AOE (area of effect) skills. With 10 stances and 36 skills, the elementalist has many AOE attacks, and is one of the best damage dealers in the game.

Possession Fire. First tier fire stance.

  • Fireball. Launches an explosive sphere of flame that blasts and burns up to 5 enemies
  • Burning Hands. All squad members receive a fire attack bonus and a fire resistance increase.
  • Torch. Set the ground aflame and damage up to 10 enemies unlucky enough to be in the scorched area.

Evocation Ice. Second tier ice stance.
  • Freeze. Freeze the ground and damage up to 10 nearby enemies.
  • Glacier. Heavy ice attack that does severe damage to one opponent.
  • Ice Storm. Invoke a storm of ice that damages all enemies in its range.

Domination Lightning. Third (and highest) tier lightning stance. Extremely powerful, but slows movement speed to walking.
  • Volt. Lightning attack that shocks up to 3 enemies.
  • Electric Plasma. Increase lightning resistance at the cost of fire resistance for all squad members.
  • Lightning Blast. Devastate enemies with a massive discharge of lightning that damages up to 6.
  • Thunder Frenzy. A fury of lightning that shocks and burns up to 12 over time.

Elemental Lord. This stance features skills from each element as well as a skill that combines all three for one awesome attack.
  • Hell Breath. Jets of fire shoot from both hands, incinerating up to 6 opponents.
  • Glacier. Heavy ice attack that does severe damage to one opponent.
  • Chain Lightning. Unleashes a series of lightning bolts that leap from one opponent to another, damaging up to 6.
* Elemental Strife. Combines all three elements to burn, freeze, and shock up to 12 enemies.

Sword of the New World - Interview @ MMORPG.com

by Inauro, 23:21

MMORPG.com chats with Phil Maurer, the Operations Team Lead for Sword of the New World.

MMORPG.com: Granado Espada has had tremendous success in the Asian Market. Can you tell us the reaction you have had from players in the U.S.?

Phil Maurer: So far our focus groups have shown incredibly positive response to Sword of the New World. The game play is fast and fun, and the graphics make people want to keep exploring to see what is in the next area. In fact we have had some problems with how much fun the game is. We are currently doing in house testing and more then a few of our support staff was staying up late playing sword and not sleeping, we ended up having to place limits on some accounts.

Sword of the New World - The Musketeer

by Inauro, 23:02

K2 Network has released new information about the Musketeer class from Sword of the New World.

The Musketeer

The Musketeer is one of the most imposing character classes in Sword of the New World. This character class is a top-tier damage dealer, and primarily relies on pistols and rifles; however, this class can also use bare fists, smash enemies with rifle stocks, fire poisonous bullets, slash and stab with a bayonet, and even fire a blinding AOE debuff. With 7 stances and 24 skills, the Musketeer is as deadly as it is diverse. The following details the depth and characteristics of three of its unique stances:

Double Gun Shot – A duel-pistol stance with the fastest shooting speed and the lowest accuracy.

  • Westraid: Greatly increases shooting speed for both guns, but decreases accuracy.
  • Blood Over-Drive: Reckless AOE attack blasts up to 8 random enemies.
  • Quattro Firing: Quickly shoots one opponent four times.
  • R.I.P.: Overwhelming attack fires dozens of shots at one enemy.

Standing Shot – Excellent rifle stance. It grants superior accuracy and quickness.
  • Birdfall: Fires at enemies in the air. Cannot be used to attack enemies on the ground.
  • Blind Flash: Tremendous AOE debuff. Blinds up to 15 opponents by firing ammunition that explodes with a bright flash of light.
  • Headshot: Shoots an opponent in the head. Highly accurate. Devastating damage.
  • Undercovering: AOE skill fires many shots at up to 6 enemies. Chance to inflict Fear.
  • Precision Shot: Fires a high-damage shot that never misses.

Encounter Shot – A close-up shooting stance utilizing the bayonet.
  • Bayonet Assault: Stabs an opponent and then smashes him/her with a rifle butt.
  • Glint: Hits the enemy in the head with the gunstock, and finishes with several rifle shots.
  • Incision: Cuts an enemy twice with the bayonet, and then fires multiple times.
  • Shooting Star: Converges on the enemy while firing a shot, kicks the enemy down, and then stabs with the bayonet. Wicked and brutal, and so fun.

Sword of the New World - Interview @ Ten Ton Hammer

by Inauro, 23:29

Peter Cesario, Producer of Sword of the New World, talks with Ten Ton Hammer about the game's progress.

Micajah: You have approximately three months till the official release date of Sword of the New World. It seems like the importation process for SotNW has been faster than what is typical for an imported game. Was there work being done on SotNW before the official announcement? Or is the development team just not sleeping?

Peter: In a word: Yes!  Before the title was announced we were in pre-production and spent a lot of time working on streamlining the localization process as well as evaluating what other changes would need to be made to better cater to a Western audience.  Of course, Redbull and coffee are also being brought in by the truckload, as we approach the launch date of the title!  Because of this, we are currently on track to meet our targeted ship date.

Sword of the New World - Peek #2 @ RPG Vault

by Inauro, 23:12

RPG Vault takes a closer look at how stances function in Sword of the New World.

As with the first time around, a nice amount of information may be found below. But don't think the following scoop gives everything away. The Fighter has the most stances, skills and weapon options in the game, and the Elementalist also has an impressive repertoire of abilities. In a single piece, we can't possibly tell you everything there is to know about these classes (there is a lot!); however, we can reveal four stances and their respective skills for each character class.
