Level Designer Allen Vandegrift has posted the first in a promised series of Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising developer blogs at 1UP.
The real heart of the job is to make the level fun. Right now you may be pondering the eternal question, "What is the fun?" That's the tricky part, because fun can't be defined. We've all played levels that sucked and, on the other hand, we can all probably think of some levels that kept us awake all night playing instead of studying for that final exam we had in the morning. It's a fine line between the two, and the essence of my job is to create areas so addictively awesome you refuse to move out of your mom's basement.
