The White Raven - Announced

by Hiddenx, 19:17

The White Raven is a Shamanic Tactical RPG - seems a Kickstarter is planned:

The White Raven - Official Teaser Trailer

loading...

Awaken from your slumber young shaman, there is much work to be done.

Take control of Jin, a young wayward spirit whisperer in this mystical open world Tactical RPG.

Bewilder your enemies in cerebral tactical combat, explore disenchanted hellscapes that blur the boundaries between the underworld and real life, and lead an unlikely team of bandits, partisans and outcasts as you uncover the harrowing truth of the Aurorean Steppes.

Wage Tactical War: Outsmart your enemies by taking advantage of every tactical opportunity afforded to you - whether it be setting the terrain on fire, shoving them onto an ally for a follow up attack or monopolizing the high ground, give them no quarter, for none shall be shown to you as well.

Weave Your Own Tale: You decide how your story plays out. Fancy being a smooth talking charlatan that exploits others’ weaknesses for your own ends? How about an unflinching truth seeker that protects the weak? Choose your own backstory, but know that the future is yet unwritten.

Confront Spiritual Hellscapes: The dangerous world of Greater Balhaea is free for you to explore. Uncover ruins of a lost civilization - as well as its hidden treasures, descend into the underworld to solve otherworldly mysteries, or stumble upon seemingly idyllic locations housing dark secrets. Have your fill of misadventures in the open world design of The White Raven.

Build And Grow Your Tribe: All great tribes have humble beginnings. Gather resources from all corners of Greater Balhaea to build and upgrade your sanctuary. Invite and recruit highly skilled specialists to take advantage of those upgrades to increase your chances of survival.

Spark Beautiful Love, Or Bitter Rivalries: Build relationships with your allies. Explore their complexities and struggles with character specific missions and determine their outcomes. Will you lead them on a path to destruction? Or will you help them to overcome their fears and weaknesses - and perhaps spark a little romance on the side?

King Arthur: Knight's Tale - Review @ IGN

by Hiddenx, 08:46

IGN reviewed King Arthur: Knight's Tale:

King Arthur: Knight's Tale Review

A whole lot of Camelot.

King Arthur is dead and you, Mordred, died killing him. Now Arthur has cursed the afterlife. In order to bring peace to the island of Avalon, you must do what you do best: Kill Arthur – or rather, the variety of vile villains his soul has been twisted into. For those who were fans of Neocore Games' previous turn-based dark fantasy, King Arthur: A Role-Playing Wargame, the idea behind King Arthur: Knight’s Tale is very welcome indeed. Don't expect a retelling of the classical romances like Malory or cinematic depictions, but do expect your favorite Arthurian characters to appear in some twisted afterlife form, and for them to take part in battles between a handful of powerful knights and hordes of enemies using a rich combat system. It's a heck of a lot of game for what it is – a sprawling adventure that's perhaps too repetitive for its own good.

[...]

Verdict
King Arthur: Knight's Tale takes the classic ideas of the legend and remixes them into a familiar form. It's ambitious and lengthy with detailed tactical mechanics that emphasize smart positioning and facing in order for your small squad of heavily armored knights to overcome many times their number, but is undermined by a shallow story and repetitive mission design. There's fun to be found in its grim, scowling characters and knightly fantasy milieu, but if you're like me you'll get bored long before you see the ending of its dark retelling.

VTM - Swansong - Review @ Gamespot

by Hiddenx, 08:42

Gamespot reviewed Vampire The Masquerade: Swansong:

Vampire The Masquerade: Swansong Review - That Sinking Feeling

Vampire The Masquerade: Swansong is a dialogue-driven RPG that stakes everything on writing that isn't up to the task.

Swansong is a role-playing game that delivers the entirety of its drama through dialogue–there is no combat to speak of. Critical scenes between characters are resolved within conversational set-pieces called "confrontations." RPGs can exist without traditional battles--just look at Disco Elysium, for example--but the dialogue now thrust center-stage needs to sing, or at least harmonize with a deep skill system. Swansong, sadly, delivers neither. Its writing is pedestrian, often incoherent, and its supporting systems are underutilized, adding little flavor to distinguish the three playable characters.

[...]

In moderation these types of puzzles are enjoyable. Skulking around someone's apartment or office, riffling through their files, digging through their secrets; Swansong has these moments that find the right balance between the suspense of espionage and the rigors of a good procedural. But it becomes overly reliant on locking things behind doors and forcing you to find the key. And, worse, much of what you uncover in those emails and post-its and documents you've dug out of filing cabinets is trivial, adding little--if anything at all--to your understanding of the world or the mission at hand.

Swansong ultimately has little to recommend it. Its writing is stilted, its storytelling muddled, and its puzzle design is mostly unimaginative. Sadly, there isn't even any kind of worthwhile payoff if you do manage to see it through to its conclusion. I reached a point where I was thinking I'd hit the close of the second act, and then the game ended. Just like this.

The Dragoness: Command of the Flame - Enemy Encounters and Combat Guide

by Hiddenx, 07:34

Learn more about the combat in The Dragoness: Command of the Flame:

Enemy Encounters and Combat Guide

Welcome back Commanders!

In our last post, we talked a lot about the world of The Dragoness: Command of the Flame, how quests work, and the basics of map exploration and resource management.
Today, we'll be taking a detailed look at the combat system and teaching you how to effectively utilise its associated mechanics!

Choosing Your Opponent
As the Commander of the Dragoness' army, you are charged with ridding the Peninsula of her enemies and fighting the battles she cannot. During your travels, you will face many powerful foes that will stand between you and your goal. During a quest, these encounters are signposted on the map by a monster unit, who will typically be blocking a crucial path forwards or guarding a precious resource cache.

Right-clicking
a monster unit on the map will reveal the composition of its associated army. Use this tool to help you decide whether your current units are strong enough to defeat them or and if you should instead retreat and build up a bigger force. Once you feel sufficiently powerful enough to take on an enemy army, simply move onto the monster unit’s space to initiate an attack.

To Battle!
Now that you've engaged an enemy army in combat you'll be brought to a 12x12 battle grid with your commander and units arrayed on the left, and the combined enemy forces on the right. The starting positions of your units are determined by how they are organised in the army management window which you can customise when roaming the map, with the first unit deployed in the top left.
Almost all battle grids contain terrain which will block certain spaces and limit movement. Types of terrain include rubble or raised woodland depending on the environment you're fighting in.

Your Move
With the stage set, it is now time for battle to commence! Below the battle grid you will see the turn order track which shows the order in which units will act. This order is determined by the individual initiative stat of each unit, the higher the initiative, the sooner they can make their move! A unit can perform one of the following actions on its turn:

The Hand of Merlin - Release Date: June 14

by Hiddenx, 05:55

The tactical RPG The Hand of Merlin will be released on June 14:

Dev blog 119 - Release date!

Hey folks!

Since we’re still in playtesting and bug fixing mode, there aren’t a lot of juicy design topics to ramble about. We’re steadily ironing out the kinks from the game, and every report we’ve received on both Steam or Discord has already been fixed.

The only temporary setback to get those fixes out is a planned power outage that will affect our builder infrastructure. We were planning a patch for today, but due to this we’ve decided to push the patch for next week. We don’t want to risk releasing a patch today without a way to react to any unexpected crashes or critical issues it could have. Note that when I say unexpected, I really mean unexpected - the expected ones would have been fixed before the patch went out!

So in short, expect a patch next week with fixes to everything that has been reported on Steam so far, and likely anything that gets reported from today until then.

As for the title of the blog post….
*drum roll*
June 14th!

In less than a month, the game will receive the final Early Access update, Update 8: Endless Mode, and leave Early Access to become the full 1.0 version!

It’s been a long, bumpy and fun ride since we started Early Access. I’m sure we couldn’t have made the game as good as it is now without the support of the people who gave us feedback. Whether that feedback was some tiny annoyance or some larger concern (like character uniqueness), we tried to improve the game with all of those in mind, and even if we didn’t end up resolving every suggestion, I can assure you that each one was at least discussed.

That said, we’re still open to feedback and are ready to improve the game the best we can with our limited capacity all the way until release! Just note that, after all, we are just 3 programmers out of 8 people in total, so there’s a natural limit to what we can pull off.
So if you have the game and would like to suggest improvements for before or after 1.0, report bugs or give us some constructive criticism, come talk to us directly on our Discord server, or post here on Steam and I’ll reply as soon as I see the message!

Thanks for the support!

King Arthur: Knight's Tale - Patch v1.1.0

by Hiddenx, 14:34

With patch v1.1.0 a lot of balance issues of King Arthur: Knight's Tale got fixed:

Content Update for Knight's Tale - Patch v1.1.0 | May 18

Patch v1.1.0

New

  • Sorting: A sort button has been added to the inventory with which players can sort all their items based on rarity
  • Filtering: A filter button has been added to the inventory with which players can filter out all the class-only items

Balance

  • The Knight's Tournament will be cancellable now in the Training Grounds but the cost won't be provided back
  • Sir Tristan's starting equipment has been improved a bit, his starting level is 4 now and received the Jump Vanguard skill when we encounter him for the first time in the Whispering Cove mission
  • Sir Tegyr's starting level has been increased to 7 from 6
  • Sprint is tagged as a Movement skill now
  • Leap Attack, Earth Shaker, Poison Bomb and Rain of Arrows received an Area tag
  • Enemy units which occupy more than 1 grid cannot be put into a Bone Cage any longer
  • Lowered the requirement of the Parry Master Challenge from 5000 to 3000
  • Changed the It's a Trap! achievement's unlock criteria: Kill 5 enemies in their own round by traps in a single encounter
  • Changed the Fire Walk With Me achievement's unlock criteria: every Arcanist spell will count from now on
  • Decreased the Vitality and the damage output of the villagers in The Return of Morgana le Fay mission
  • Various Endgame missions have been reviewed and improved
  • Reviewed and slightly rebalanced several thematic enchants (Blood Magic, Wild Magic etc.)
  • Rebalanced the AP/kill enchant which will grant AP once per turn from now on
  •  Developer comment: The combination of stacking AP per kill from various sources and the ease at which certain heroes can close the gap with enemies, combined with other, stacking on kill effects made this enchant far too powerful. We hope this change reduces the possibility to abuse this mechanic, without taking away from other builds that use it.
  • Increased the cooldown of the Vanguard's Jump skill a little bit. 3 turns needed for it to be used again but with its mastery this number can be lowered to 2
  •  Developer comment: The Vanguard had the ability to deal massive damage, and did that without any repercussions. Jump combined with Hide was a complete safeguard for the class, no matter how aggressive or risky one played. With the changes, mistakes can be punished by the AI, and the Vanguard can't close distance so easily - thus making it harder to clear the whole backline of enemy teams with only one Hero

Fallout: London is a DLC-sized mod for Bethesda’s Fallout 4. As a continuation of the base game, the mod will allow the player to visit the previously unexplored post-apocalyptic environment of London.

As a divergence from previous official titles in the series, Fallout: London is not set in America. Visiting a totally new setting allows for us to explore totally new cultures which have not homogenized with their American counterparts. Fabled Lands - Full Release on May 26

by Hiddenx, 10:34

Fabled Lands will leave Early Access next week:

FABLED LANDS IS LEAVING EARLY ACCESS MAY 26!

I'm incredibly excited to announce that Fabled Lands will be leaving Early Access on May 26th, 2022!

It’s taken 3 years to get to this point, with 1 of those years in Early Access. Players who’ve been exploring their way through the Steam Early Access version of Fabled Lands will automatically gain access to the full game. The game will release simultaneously on Windows and MacOS.

Not only that, but the base game launches with a BIG content update
, chapter 5, The Court of Hidden Faces
, bringing new quests, achievements, encounters, enemies, items and more! It is a huge balance update so fresh heroes are recommended, although older saves will continue to function.

The game’s final release wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible contributions of our dedicated Early Access community. We’ve put our hearts into this adventure and it’s been awesome getting so much support from players throughout this last critical year of development. We’ve made many changes during Fabled Land's journey in Early Access, and done our best to meaningfully integrate players’ feedback and requests as we march toward the version 1.0 launch.

I can’t wait to welcome you all to the epic adventures of the world of Fabled Lands next week! See you at the launch party!

Wartales - Update #3

by Hiddenx, 22:29

Shiro Games have released a major update to Wartales:

Community Update #3 Out Now!

Hello mercenaries!

We’re very excited and proud to present the third community update for Wartales! This update focuses on some of the more popular community requests, bringing character relationships, customisation, balancing passes, economic improvements and more to Wartales!

In addition, the much requested Chinese localisation is nearly complete. And we plan to run a beta with our Chinese players in June with a view to release fully shortly afterwards. We'll share more news with you all about this soon.

Finally, for our non-English speaking players, please note that due to some issues with localisation, some text may not be translated correctly/at all. We are aware of this issue and will have it fixed when the final translations are provided to us early next week.

With all that out of the way, let's take a look at what's new!

Changelist:

NEW SYSTEM Confessions!
In Wartales, many things happen every day. The loss of a companion, a particularly poorly negotiated battle or, on the contrary, the heroic fight led by your captain can leave a mark on your companions' minds.

To represent this, we have devised a system in which your companions react, according to their own personality, to these events in the form of a speech punctuated by decisions to be made.

Will you make your companion drink after the death of his boar friend? Or will he help himself to the common fund to compensate for his grief? The choices you will make will deeply affect your companion for the rest of their life, leading them to strengthen up or, on the contrary, to leave the troop.

NEW SYSTEM Relations!
In addition to the confession system, we have developed a system of relationships between your companions. Wartales is first and foremost a story about a group of mercenaries who live from day to day and who fight, grow rich or die together.

To represent this, your companions can form friendships or enmities with others. The consequences are numerous: they generate Happiness together, fight better side by side and can even fall in love. On the other hand, they may hate each other, in which case it would not be a good idea to have them sleep together, unless you risk finding one of your protégés with his throat slit during the night.

Different actions have a chance to increase or decrease the relationships.

REWORK Prisoners
Do not let them escape! Prisoners now have a chance to escape. To represent this, they have an 'escape ability' stat. To prevent a prisoner from escaping, you can place companions close to them during a Rest. Obviously, some companions will be more effective than others in this exercise.
Recruit your prisoners! Prisoners who spend time with you and are treated well may one day ask to join your troop. Yes, it is possible to reconstitute a real Inquisition troop!

A new piece of camp equipment is introduced: the whip. Assign a foreman to whip your companions and make them work more efficiently. Indeed, a whipped companion produces twice as fast when assigned to a production camp equipment! Be careful not to overuse it or it may succumb to the blows.

Salt and Sacrifice - Review @ Inverse

by Hiddenx, 15:24

Inverse checked out Salt and Sacrifice:

Salt and Sacrifice is a grotesquely gorgeous RPG held back by clunky design

I finally stumble upon the malevolent wretch in a filthy, drab ruin.

I’d been searching high and low for Ghor Lorhotha, one of Salt and Sacrifice’s many Mages — dark, massive creatures that roam the map. The journey was full of deadly ghouls and traps, and left me with few resources remaining. I begin the battle hopeful, but within seconds know that I do not stand a chance. Lorhotha slices at me with its colossal cleaver, then hurls a flurry of disgusting flies at me. With my movement slowed, I am helpless as the blade comes crashing down into my helpless body. Over a half an hour of work for nothing. Woof.

This happens time and time again in Salt and Sacrifice, one of the most frustrating and disappointing gaming experiences in recent years.

[...]

Soulslikes are appealing because of the sense of accomplishment they evoke, offering tremendously difficult battles that — with practice — can be overcome. Every death feels fair, and the design philosophy is fine-tuned in such a way that feels intentional and deliberate. Salt and Sacrifice, on the other hand, achieves difficulty with clunky design, which completely misses the point of what makes a good challenge worth the time. Instead, the sacrifice of wasted time here is more than enough to make you salty.

Dolmen - Review @ Screenrant

by Hiddenx, 15:19

Screenrant has reviewed the action RPG Dolmen, which will be released tomorrow:

Dolmen Review: Intense Combat, Unsettling Atmosphere

Dolmen offers a thrilling action RPG experience with horrific Lovecraftian creatures and bosses that present increasingly difficult challenges.

Developed by Massive Work Studio, and published by Massive Work Studio, Koch Media, and Prime Matter, Dolmen is a Soulslike action RPG set in a futuristic world where humanity has advanced to the point of colonizing planets. On Revion Prime, an accident causes the Zoan Corporation to hire a worthy combatant that can collect valuable resources for them and clear the infestation of monsters that plague the planet. As the story progresses, more challenging enemies and bosses threaten to erase the timeline and send the Corporation away from Revion Prime.

[...]

One of the most thrilling parts of Dolmen is the horror element that grows exponentially as the monsters become more difficult and much better at hiding. At first, most enemies can be seen from a distance, but they quickly begin to hide around corners, on the ceiling, or within the environment. A few jumpscares will lead to cautiously approaching every turn and inspecting all of the walls. Horror mixed with features like an intricate upgrade system, daunting combat encounters, and the ability to take on difficult bosses alongside some friends makes Dolmen an exciting title that delivers constant action and intense challenges.

RPGWatch - The End has been Delayed

by Myrthos, 10:21

The 'End is Nigh' announcement for RPGWatch turned out to be somewhat premature. It was the plan when I posted it two weeks ago, but in the meantime I had several discussions with a third party and the RPGWatch team on the future of RPGWatch.

It has been decided that in July, RPGWatch will move to Sorcerer's Place. This means that the site as you know it, will still be available after July, but hosted by Sorcerer's Place and it's owner, Taluntain, will become the new owner of RPGWatch.

Most of the RPGWatch team will remain, but I will no longer be a part of that team and have no involvement in the operational side of RPGWatch. In case you are wondering, there has been no exchange of money to make this happen. This only happens, because I learned how much RPGWatch will be missed and after discussion with the team, this was deemed the most viable option for you to still be able to visit RPGWatch with its current functionality.

There will be some changes, like ads being introduced again to pay for the servers (which you can donate money for to not see them). And there will be a move to Xenforo for our forums. I will work with Taluntain to get this done before the end of July, or shortly after that.
Whatever happens after that to RPGWatch is to be decided by the new owner, together with the RPGWatch team.

This means that for the foreseeable future the RPGWatch team will still be able to provide you with the latest RPG news.
If you have any interest in helping the RPGWatch team in this new chapter, as news poster or moderator, there are opportunities to do so.

I hope this is good news!

Mars Tactics - Announced for 2023

by Hiddenx, 21:06

The turn-based Strategy RPG Mars Tactics will be released in 2023:

Mars Tactics - Announcement Trailer | Turn-Based Tactical Game

loading...

Mars Tactics combines turn-based tactical gameplay with large-scale strategy across a detailed map of Mars. Choose one of two asymmetric factions – Capital or Labor – and lead soldiers that grow and learn dynamically from what happens to them in each battle. Vehicles, air strikes, and artillery all allow you to reshape the destructible buildings and environment of each battlefield.

In the battle of Capital vs Labor, who will you choose? The Mellon Corporation – Capital – monopolizes the mining of a new rare element with the potential to solve all of Earth’s energy needs. But the workers on Mars – Labor – are exposed to deadly mining conditions and cut off from all regulatory protection they might have enjoyed while on Earth. Will you lead Labor in the rise from a small band of desperate workers scrounging for ammunition and supplies, or accept charge of the vast resources and powerful starting position of Capital (but be forever beholden to the relentless demands of your shareholders on Earth)?

The best of turn-based tactical gameplay, with battlefields designed for destruction.

  • Classic Turn-Based Tactical Combat: Suppression, flanking, cover, line of sight, fog of war, friendly fire, and everything you've come to expect from the genre.
  • 360 Aim System: Your troops can shoot at anything in their line of sight – not just enemies. Shoot the ceiling and throw a grenade through the hole. Unlock your tactical creativity.
  • Advanced Suppression Mechanics: Taking fire can reduce a unit's AP and ability to act. Focus fire on a single target to keep them pinned and vulnerable to flanking.
  • Ballistics and Destruction: Bullets behave like real physical objects and missed shots can hit other enemies, allies, or civilians. Most objects can be destroyed to remove cover and create new attack lines. Can't out-flank 'em? Blow a hole in the wall!

Today's rookies scavenging for weapons and ammo, turn into tomorrow's veterans riding armored vehicles and calling in air strikes.

  • Unique Personalities: Your troops develop traits and abilities dynamically based on what happens in battle. If a rookie keeps hitting lucky distant shots, he might grow into a sniper. Adapt to how your troops develop to build unique squads in every playthrough.
  • Dynamic Battlefields: Equipment is scarce on Mars. Look for stuff to scavenge around the battlefield. If your sniper runs out of ammo, loot an SMG from a dead combatant to stay in the fight.
  • Grand Warfare: Faced with a fortified enemy position? Call in an airstrike or make use of that artillery you stashed nearby. Want to make the enemy tremble? Arrive at the battlefield in armored personnel carriers, rolling right over the barricades in your path.
  • Emergent Economics: You're just one agent in a dynamic and interlinked economy stretching across Mars and Earth. Wreck an ice mine during a battle and the drop in water supplies could send prices surging. (Maybe that was your goal!)

You aren't just fighting individual battles, you are conquering a map of Mars.

  • Better Strategy Layer: Battles take place in a big, interconnected world. Squads near a battle site will eventually enter combat as reinforcements. Create or block escape routes by capturing surrounding terrain. Carefully hide squads and set up ambushes.
  • Squad Management: You will fight across multiple battle fronts, and your soldiers can get tired or injured. Troops will be sent on special assignments to boost support for your cause or recruit rookies. Growing a deep, diverse bench of soldiers will be crucial to victory.
  • Goal Oriented Action Planning (GOAP AI): Enemy soldiers and commanders think ahead and look for creative ways to accomplish their goals. Sometimes that means retreating to fight you another day, sometimes that means luring your troops into an ambush.
  • Design Your Economy: Embrace the free market to buy your way to victory, or setup communes to create ultra-loyal workers? Rule Mars with an iron red fist, or listen to the concerns of your people?
