Here they are. I'm sure the first two don't come as a big surprise.

HiddenX January 31st, 2018 21:55

My favorites are Divinity: Original Sin 2, ELEX and Battle Brothers and I'm happy that a lot of Watchers voted for them, too.

The PC Port of The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is pretty good, too.

Capt. Huggy Face January 31st, 2018 21:59

Yeah, sure would've liked to have seen Battle Brotes squeak in there at 3rd, but nothing to be surprised or upset about.

Mustawd January 31st, 2018 22:02

Prey too huh?

I should submit Madden 2018, as it has a story mode now. Best ARPG of the year.

So, yeah, easiest year to predict for a long time. Eh? What? Wait a minute…

Torment got third?

Nope, you got me there. I thought that'd be down 8 to 10 somewhere. I guess it's because a lot of people played it, what with the kickstarter and all the hype, and many people don't complete many games in a year, so if it was someone's third choice of games they'd played, and they'd only played three, it gets a vote. A case of sheer numbers out-classing quality.

Yeah, yeah, subjective and all that, and, sure, maybe 10% of its players actually liked it and put it as no.1, but I'm still somewhat irritated that it gets a historical medal as a result.

SpoonFULL January 31st, 2018 22:42

Well done and well deserved for all the good crpgs in the top 10.

I am particularly pleased and happy for ELEX to get the recognition that they deserve but did not see in the gaming media.

Drithius January 31st, 2018 22:43

Torment for third kind of confuses me too. It's more of a bad adventure game.

HiddenX January 31st, 2018 22:47

It was a close race for the third place between with the indie game Battle Brothers and Torment: Tides of Numenera:

Divinity: Original Sin II38,1%
ELEX19,2%
Torment: Tides of Numenera7,4%
Battle Brothers6,2%
Prey4,9%
Mass Effect: Andromeda4,8%
Expeditions: Viking3,5%
Planescape: Torment Enhanced Edition2,6%
Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar2,1%
West of Loathing1,4%

Wisdom January 31st, 2018 22:53

Love it. Good choices.

I honestly thought Mass Effect would perform better than Torment here, you can't move for Mass Effect and Bioware fans round these parts, and if not that then Prey would take up the slack, but, what? So confused.

Am I right in thinking it's a sheer number of votes thing? How does the top 10 of 1st to 10th by 1-3 definition of quality compare to the top 10 of sheer number of votes regardless of numerical order?

Myrthos January 31st, 2018 23:09

As every year, your votes are weighed. 1st place gets 4 points, second place gets 2 points and 3rd place gets 1 point. Or in other words there is a factor of 2 difference between the rankings. The percentage is based on points, not votes.

The only thing that surprised me is IMO the spot too high on Prey. :)

Have to agree but there was not fourth spot to vote on and also it seems that not many regulars here played it which is a shame.
Here's hope the upcoming port of the sequel changes it.

Gothic 2 is considered a classic open word RPG

HiddenX January 31st, 2018 23:14

Maybe we should make a GotY vote for ports/remakes for 2018. We are getting more and more of these - which is a good thing.

Thrasher January 31st, 2018 23:20

Thanks Myrthos!

Not surprised by D:OS2 taking first place, it's a lot of fun, and happy to see Elex getting some recognition.

Cacheperl January 31st, 2018 23:32

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!

HOW DARE YOU!

Just kidding. Hurray for the well deserved winners.

Eye January 31st, 2018 23:36

I think Swen will be pleased. Though it is no surprise. :)

Carnifex January 31st, 2018 23:46

I'm happy to see Battle Brothers ranked up pretty high. I might have voted for Elex had I played it earlier than I did.

ChaosTheory February 1st, 2018 00:25

I'm torn on ELEX. Part of me wants to try it, but then I watch "let's play" videos and it looks sooo clunky and ridiculous. It reminds me of Anarchy Online, but that was like 15 years ago…
