Dragon Age - Darkspawn Chronicles Details

BioWare has kicked up a page for the Darkspawn Chronicles DLC that was revealed yesterday. This $5 standalone adventure will see you playing as a darkspawn; from the official blurb:
Quote:

You now fight as the Darkspawn! The city of Denerim, jewel of Ferelden, girds itself for war. As a hurlock vanguard, you alone hold the power to make thralls of your fellow darkspawn and drive them into the heat of battle. Heed the archdemon's call--Denerim must burn!
* A look at an alternate history: what if your character had died in the Joining ceremony, and the Grey Wardens marched under Alistair's command instead?
* A standalone adventure in which you command genlocks, hurlocks, shrieks, and even the mighty ogres.
* Complete the module and unlock an epic Darkspawn item in DA:O and Awakening.
More information.

You have got to be kidding me.

Polyester May 6th, 2010 00:33

Indeed. Sounds a 100 % ridiculous.

Dhruin May 6th, 2010 00:38

Yep, sounds like the sort of thing you'd see from a fan mod.

Korplem May 6th, 2010 00:50

If they had allowed you to use the events from your regular campaign and see them take place from a different angle it would be interesting. But, to just re-write the game history and take your character out of the picture seems a little lazy.

Although, for 5 bucks they probably aren't too worried about making a masterpiece.

Trelow May 6th, 2010 03:03

Sounds awesome to me!

pox67 May 6th, 2010 05:10

Huh, my first response to this news was that actually sounds interesting.
I played the main campaign and that was enough for me. I didn't go back for Awakening as it sounded more of the same.

This might be the thing to have me fire up DA again after finishing the main campaign.

Strange the range of responses you get to DLC announcements. Just like the old adage: you can't please all of the people all of the time.

Phonix May 6th, 2010 05:14

I like the idea to, it sound like David Gaider's The Calling :)

pox67 May 6th, 2010 05:16

I read that book as well, maybe that makes this DLC more interesting.

Rills May 6th, 2010 06:09

I smell EA.

Phonix May 6th, 2010 07:31

Btw, how do I get that "RPGWatch Donor" sig, I did donate but used my real name.? :)

stealth May 6th, 2010 08:09

I'm not too sure about this one either. It might be fun but I would rather see DLC like Wardens Keep.

Aditya May 6th, 2010 08:43

It sounds interesting..not sure why there are negative reactions. I, for one, was tired of battling Darkspawn AGAIN, after Origins and (little bit of) Awakening. This DLC with role reversal might be fun when you are pitted against Grey Wardens and (possibly) battle Alistair.

DArtagnan May 6th, 2010 11:58

Well, I'm guessing a few hundred thousand fans will gladly pay 5$ for this.

Once again, DLC/free money demonstrates how the limited resources of this world should be divided.

Sigh.

Send a PM to Myrthos with the details (eg real name + nick) and he'll fix it up.

Maylander May 6th, 2010 12:23

Sounds interesting, but not interesting enough for me to start playing DA again just yet. I'll probably buy this the next time I decide to give the game a whirl though.

Tragos May 6th, 2010 12:33

Can i command hordes of minions against 4 pathetic characters who don't know how to fight and got a dragon vs a loser and some pregnant women at the end?

If yes then i am so getting it .

It's probably just one Warden (Alistair). All the others are dead… Oh, and Riordan (if I remember the name correctly).

Lemonhead May 6th, 2010 15:49

Darkyawn… I hope they do away with them in DA2. My least favorite part of DA:O was the darkspawn. It's hard to find a more one dimensional enemy in gaming. "We are evil!!!, because we are really really evil and… and.. well evil."

In this DLC though, do you get to pick a class? Mage/theif/fighter for your darkspawn?

xSamhainx May 6th, 2010 17:08

Sounds like an interesting little change of pace for a sunday afternoon gaming session. Might be fun

Barghest May 6th, 2010 18:48

They ought to fix the bugs in DA:O and Awakening before doing more DLC

WorstUsernameEver May 6th, 2010 19:03

Bugfixing teams and DLC teams are usually separate though, so they could be doing both things.

Alrik Fassbauer May 6th, 2010 19:58

I see this LC as the perfect opportunity for those who want to play "really evull !!!".

Umm..I meant ARMY of Grey Wardens..all those who were recruited. Assuming there are werewolves, golems and such, it should be an interesting fight if not exactly 'strategic'.

I suppose there will be a wheel with four options to choose which type of horde you want to send in battlefield: genlocks, hurlocks, shrieks or ogres, depending upon the enemy type..

Roland May 6th, 2010 20:38

I think it sounds interesting to me as well.

Will be DL when available :)

JDR13 May 7th, 2010 00:55

Sounds like it could be interesting, but I'd much rather play DA: Awakenings… if they ever get around to patching it. :-/

Thrasher May 7th, 2010 02:02

You and me both. By that time, I may have forgotten about this game. ;)

There are bugs? I stopped playing awhile ago - but maybe I wasn't far enough in to encounter anything. Are they serious/game breaking?

TBH I've encountered only crashing so far. Annoying but definitely not game-breaking.
I may be just lucky though, considering that my experience with NWN2 (!!) as far as 1.06 was positive.

Maylander May 7th, 2010 13:40

Oh yes, quite a few bugs. Example: One bug will rob your main character of all gear at a certain point in the game (I've encountered it once, out of three playthroughs).

Acleacius May 7th, 2010 13:56

Just goes to show what a bad idea dlc is, since it causes them to break up teams instead of actually finishing the game and doing a good job of fixing major bugs.

One day you'll look back and laugh…

that sounds horrible, but strangely amusing. Now it'll probably happen to me ='.'=

Some of the verified bugs in Awakenings….

Pretty embarrassing imo….

wow, wasn't aware the extent of the issues…

Have to agree, they need to releasing a patch asap!

Dasale May 7th, 2010 23:19

Verified is quickly written:
  • The first PC bug about summons and tactics was here before Awakening and 1.03, I'm 100% sure of that.
  • It's like bugs with switching weapons and visual I had that sort of bugs before Awakening and 1.03.
  • Or unlimited approval I quoted at least one with 1.02 and Sten.

There's also quite many that are DLC related, sure it's bug anyway but easy to avoid by disabling those DLC when you play it, anyway those are useless with Awakening.

And the list is rather short, I will not quote list of bugs like in The Witcher, Gothic 3 and DAO that was all a lot longer. For me if this list is right that shows the weird anti hype build around Awakening. Another crowd behavior phenomena, humans can be strange sometimes.

The list is not rather short, and what does it matter if some of those bugs were present in DA:O? That only make you wonder even more why they haven't been fixed yet.

Yeah, I'm sure a list created to make people aware of the bugs in DA: Awakenings was done for the purpose of "anti hype".

Dasale May 8th, 2010 15:38

Purpose? Did I wrote this? No.

People don't control their crowd reactions and crowds are hardly controlled, so there's no "purpose" or manipulation here. I just quote a point, that DAO had much more bugs and it didn't generate such reaction.

That said the first main error with DAA is to not have release at same time the source so mod makers could check if their coding would be still be compatible. The second is just the DLC system.

And this list has nothing of a "verified" quality unlike you wrote.

JDR13 May 8th, 2010 20:51

Dasale, I'm sorry that you're too blinded by your love of DA to be able to admit that Awakenings has more bugs than the average Bioware game, but please don't try to blame mods and DLC for all the glitches in the game.

Dasale May 10th, 2010 00:09

I played it and you didn't. Many bugs in this list have unclear cause and people don't seem able to reproduce them clearly with no mod and no DLC. Some bugs in this list are purely DLC related. Few are quoted as possibly not a bug and few as linked to a mod.

First time I played it I had some mods and all DLC. After some crashes and some problems related to DLC, I uninstalled all mods, sold all DLC items and disabled all DLC but SP and RtO. Then I played it fully and didn't crash anymore, got a bug and discovered after it was because of a file in override folder I forgot. Then I noticed two bugs related to approval, but yes there's possibly some I didn't quote but at least I didn't got the lost items in mines and other worse.

Here a list of DAO glitches on the wiki you quoted:
http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Drag…_Bugs/Glitches

It seems to me as long and is after 2 patches and I quote it is far to have all bugs, for example I got weapon drawing glitches or infinite loop in dialog with Sten allowing me infinite approval, both with 1.02.
