Finished Nehrim mod for Oblivion and it sucked…

…up more of my time than any game in years. And it continues to suck up my time as I started a new character in a new game of it. Bravo!

It was a little rough in places but overall it was fantastic. It really shows how much Bethesda could have done with the original Oblivion plot.

GhanBuriGhan October 18th, 2010 17:09

Nice flamebait there. Sigh, I was one of the early adopters here, and I am still only a few hours in. I want more free time…

I didn't MEAN to spend so much time on it but then 50-ish hours were gone over the course of a couple weeks and I finished the main plot.

HiddenX October 18th, 2010 18:46

Yes, Nehrim is one of the best Oblivion total conversions yet.

Has anybody tried their Morrowind mod ?

human_male October 19th, 2010 01:13

What's the translation like? Does it sound like it's writen by a native English speaker?

And how long does it take to get used to the German voices?

Many thanks.

BillSeurer October 19th, 2010 01:32

The German voice acting is excellent although with my rusty German I only understood a fraction of it. The text translations (including captions) are superb with almost no odd phrasing or typos.

Couchpotato October 19th, 2010 05:04

I would love to try this mod out but unfortunately I will not install oblivion again after finding the game boring and with bad game mechanics.I rather play DragonAge And BaldursGate games than that game.

You're only cheating yourself with that attitude. Don't underestimate what the right mods can do for a game.

I have some mods work others crashed my game it was a huge hassle. Not everyone loves oblivion believe me I tried.I can never get into the game.As I said i wont reinstall the game again. Some recent news looks like the next one will be a online mmo So it will be another game I wont try.

GhanBuriGhan October 19th, 2010 08:28

You would "love to try the mod", but don't because you won't install Oblivion. I'm sure there is a logic to that somewhere…
Well, if your problem with Oblivion is the technology, or the combat system itself, then indeed you shouldn't . Regarding most other aspects, Nehrim is a different game, with its own strengths and weaknesses. Peoples mileage regarding crashes seems to vary.

Yes my problem with Oblivion is the technology, or the combat system itself.Including the weak quest system.Every Bethesda game suffers from these problems.Fallout 3 was easy to install the mods required to make it better.Bethesda even mentioned it was there own fault because the engine they used to make the game and because of poor technical skills.

They know how to make graphics look good but not much else. Hence why I said I would love to try the mod, but don't because I will not install or try to play Oblivion.Im looking forward to fallout nv though because of obsidian they know how to make rpgs and implement quests quests better then Bethesda.

I have to say, I disagree with that statement… Bethesda makes better RPGs than Obsidian…

Although, I agree with constant Oblivion crashes.

Alrik Fassbauer October 19th, 2010 11:58

I wrote them an e-mail offering my help in translating, but I never got an answer.

I just don't want to register in yet another forum …

OK then, the combat feels the same, and the art is unchanged (and indeed performance is poorer due to many more objects and scripts in the world).
The quests and story are very different in Nehrim though. Generally linear, but very involved and spiced up by smart scripting and really well designed locations. Well, I won't try to convince you any further.

Lurking Grue October 24th, 2010 09:36

Are any of you getting a strange quirk with Nehrim (English version) and Win7 (32-bit), namely it completely freezing your computer once you quit the game? Sometimes it manages to unfreeze on its own after a few minutes, sometimes I need to end the program with the program manager, etc. It's happening to me everytime I quit Nehrim and it's pretty tiresome. I cannot find a fix to this problem. Any hints? (Yes, I've tried XP compatibility modes and running as admin.)

fragonard October 24th, 2010 19:40

I get the same thing with Win7/64. I've learned to live with it but I understand that there is a quick exit mod for Oblivion that can be used to mostly cure this.

Gutted November 16th, 2010 06:31

I have tried Oblivion several times since it's release. I always go through a 2-day process of collating all the appropriate mods and configurations and invariably am still let down. Has this total conversion mod finally made Oblivion worthwile? Or would I need further mods to have the proper experience?

I wouldn't mind giving it another go but I don't think I have the fortitude to try and figure out all the mods again,…

fragonard November 16th, 2010 07:02

You don't need any mods for Nehrim, it's complete in itself. Whether or not you'll like it is another question. It's better than Oblivion IMHO but if you could never get into OB it may not be enough. I think it's worth a try though. I enjoyed it very much but I also liked OB for a year or so.

Depends.

If you don't like Oblivion because of purely gameplay reasons, Nehrim might be just the thing.

If you don't like Oblivion due to technical/engine/animation quirks - Nehrim will do nothing for you.

wolfing November 16th, 2010 15:03

What if I consider the original Oblivion with no mods (except reducing the font size) a really really really good game?

Then you should probably travel back to the planet you came from, and enjoy the alien mushrooms you used to eat ;)

crpgnut November 16th, 2010 16:50

I must eat those mushrooms too :) I didn't finish Nehrim but I got over 100 hours of enjoyment out of it. In the end, I didn't care for where the story was going. I played it as a pure exploration game though, and it is huge and way more interesting than Oblivion.

You'll probably like it.

Look, it is free. Just try it! You'll probably know whether you like it within an hour or so.

ToddMcF2002 January 15th, 2011 08:06

I started playing it tonight and I have to say I'm pretty impressed. While there are lingering Oblivion art assets and interface Nehrim is what Oblivion should have been.
- no quest markers
- 3 hours into it and I've got a lousy dagger (had to buy the bow)
- no huge drops or looting every fallen guard etc.
- quests have a twist and there is never a super obvious solution
- combat is fairly challenging
- No level scaling

At first I was a bit worried about the confined and linear area but it opens up in short order. The German is fantastic and the subtitles stay on the screen more than long enough for me to read. I had to laugh at the preverbial rat quest when the NPC said "I know what your thinking don't look at me like that!"

So far so good.

purpleblob March 31st, 2011 11:25

Ok, I'm running out of games to play… and I just looked at trailer of this game and it perked my interest. Now… questions..

I haven't got Oblivion installed atm. Do I need to patch it before installing Nehrim? (I hope not). Also, how long is the game length?

Jaz April 2nd, 2011 06:29

I don't remember if Oblivion had to be patched to be able to run Nehrim piggyback (used the GOTY edition as a base so I don't think so), but I remember all too well that Nehrim had to be patched.
Nehrim took me about 60+ hours to finish the main quest, and I hardly did any side quests. So I'd say that's a decent cost:game time ratio ;).

crpgnut April 2nd, 2011 07:12

It requires the latest version of Oblivion. If you have a GoTY version, you're good to go. If you're like me, you'll get to repatch Oblivion if you don't have the exe somewhere on your pc.

Pessimeister April 5th, 2011 18:01

Man, I said to myself that I'd never reinstall Oblivion again after finishing up my last Knights of the Nine+Shivering Isles playthrough and sampling what I thought was the majority of the game's quest content plus some mods. I felt I'd done it all, seen it all…y'know?

But reading this thread makes me doubt the strength of that resolve. :D

If the Nehrim mod has some quest content that rivals Knights of the Nine for enjoyment and some solid dungeon design and a new sense of exploration of a world, I may have to give it a look sometime.

Roi Danton April 5th, 2011 18:07

Just out of interest: Did anyone use any mods in addition to Nehrim or just Oblivion + Nehrim Mod?

crpgnut April 5th, 2011 18:47

I used several, Roi. There are a bunch of mods that work seamlessly with Nehrim. Someone rewrote OBMM to work with new masters and that allowed many folks to port their mods over.

Roi Danton April 5th, 2011 20:12

What did you use if I may ask? I'm not really into the TES Mod-Scene.

Btw, I just installed Oblivion and Nehrim and it's quite good so far. The voice acting is better than in some AAA games. What I didn't like though was the close combat (Bethesdas fault) and the fact that you start in a sodding dungeon AND that it takes about an hour to get clear. I hate starting dungeons. This is nearly as bad as the BG2 dungeon or that good forsaken thing in Divinity 2.

GhanBuriGhan April 5th, 2011 20:20

I absolutely adore that starting dungeon!

crpgnut April 5th, 2011 21:06

Don't remember exactly, because it's been quite a while. Here is a list of mods that work well with the game:

http://www.sureai.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=86&t=2894

I've used the harvesting one, the interface mod, tried the stealth overhaul, etc.

CountChocula September 24th, 2011 13:11

I remember watching a YouTube vid about the Andoran mod some time ago. It looked pretty cool, but it was entirely in Russian. Have they done an English translation?

azarhal September 24th, 2011 14:36

They were supposed to translate it from what I remember, but I don't think it have been released yet. They have an english page on their website, most of the stuff is on the russian version though.

lostforever September 25th, 2011 11:09

I am looking out for this as well. Its not released yet but they did say they will release it before Skyrim….

This^

I am now at level 10, and i would have to say this is far better than Oblivion OR Morrowind, and probably the best modern RPG I have ever played. The only weak point in the entire game is the combat, but it is bearable. Every other facet of the game is a rock solid A++. Anyone with any affinity for RPGs, particularly TES style play, needs to mount this game and thrust vigorously. Anyone disappointed by Oblivion will find this mod to be the sole justification for Oblivion's existence. I will continue playing this until I have finished it, even if that means dividing time between it and Skyrim. It is that good.

RivianWitch November 2nd, 2011 20:59

I haven't been here for a while, and I must say, that's it's good to see a TES subforum up!

I played a bit of Nehrim, and the graphics seemed better than vanilla Ob to me; though I might still have had some of the pluginless (?) mods (that I can't remember what it was anymore) installed into the version of Ob I used. I didn't make a clean re-install, since Nehrim offers to use a copy of Ob, so you can still play your Ob seperately with whatever plugins you prefer.

I must say it looked quite well-polished, and I liked the touch of originality they seemed to insert in many of the quests, though sadly I haven't had time to play it much.

I would recommend it to anyone who's running out of games to play - it's free, so what is it going to cost you to try it out? A small amount of time, that's all.

The only slight downer is lack of English voices if your German totally sucks, like mine; but I just put voices off (nice soundtrack, btw) and read the subtitles.

Does the Morrowind conversion now come with English subtitles as well? I've made my Morrowind look very pretty, so it would be nice if that conversion is compatible with the MGE and other graphics-enhancing mods.

ToddMcF2002 December 2nd, 2011 00:04

Nehrim runs the same shader extensions you get in the Oblivion graphics extender. Pretty much the same thing as the Morrowind Graphics Extender. The texture packs are a different matter.

I never get tired of godrays.
