[Mod] Vurt's Gothic II Texture Pack

Vurt's Gothic II Graphics Overhaul

Current features (v0.7):

* Works for Gothic 2 NotR and "vanilla" Gothic 2. I recommend using NotR since i've added many graphical improvements to the addon.

* New meshes to improvements the look of the natural environment. Plants, trees / tree stumps, grasses, mushrooms etc. Old World has been given extra care since many of the meshes there were extremely blocky.

* The default version has very few different trees and other plants, this mod ups the amount of different pines, conifers and plants.

* Improved herbs. In vanilla Gothic 2 the herbs are often stuck too deep into the ground, it looks ugly and sometimes the mesh is almost completely hidden. This mod brings them up a bit further and most has been given a slight graphical update.

* New textures for landscape, architecture, monsters, blood… Some of the clothes, armors and weapons are also enhanced or changed completely.

* New water. 80 frames of animation (original is 10 frames).

* Resculpted rocks and cliffs that are much larger, clouds and sometimes trees are added to the tops.

* New rain, sun, skies (sun is still experimental).

* Only aesthetics, no gameplay changes.

* 600+ new textures, 60+ New or improved models

Installation

Drag/drop the .vdf into /data (example: C:\Steam\steamapps\common\gothic ii\Data)
Copy the Gothic.ini if you want my fog, sky colors and tweaked settings. If your water is flashing you might need to use this file (take a backup of your old Gothic.ini file first!). This files goes into C:\Steam\steamapps\common\gothic ii\system

Download

http://www.worldofgothic.de/dl/download_491.htm

My Gothic.ini (use if you get flickering water):
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/69293119/Gothic.ini

You should either start a new game OR reload the first map (by going to any other map and then coming back to it) to avoid missing trees and edits i've done to the map.

My recommended Nvidia settings.
<- click
Supersampling is important for leaves and other textures that uses an alpha channel to look good, just turning on Anti-Aliasing doesnt help these kinds of of textures. This goes for any game out there, not just Gothic2.

My other mods

If you liked this mod you might want to check out my other work.

Fallout is one of the classic RPG series for the PC, please check out my Fallout New Vegas Flora Overhaul and if you're Bethesda / TES fan you also might want to check out my extensive list of Morrowind flora mods. For Bethesdas latest game Skyrim I have created yet another flora overhaul, check it out here. One of the absolutely best and most atmospheric PC games ever created, imo, is System Shock 2, here are my mods on SystemShock.org.

Here are my mods for Knights of the Old Republic 2:

Hey.

Will this texture pack affect the gameplay in any way?

How do we install it?

Thank you for all the work you put into this.

PS : Now we demand one for Gothic I right now! ;)

bemushroomed November 1st, 2010 18:46

No, its just textures and a few meshes, so it doesnt change gameplay in any way. It should be complatible with any mod too.

Drop the the file where all other .vdf files are (..\Gothic II\Data) and it should work.

The Wanderer November 1st, 2010 21:17

Great.

I remember using a 32Gb texture pack done by Postal.
File hosted on Rpgdot back in the days.
It was a great file.
By what I've seen from the pictures that you showed us here, I can't wait to use yours.

I might try it soon.

Thanks again.

Kostas November 1st, 2010 22:16

Thanks,I won't get to try it for a while but I'll seed the torrent.

32 Gigabytes of textures for Gothic? Can anyone confirm this?

The Wanderer November 1st, 2010 22:57

LOL.

Sorry.

Meant 32Mb.

bemushroomed November 2nd, 2010 15:06

Rapidshare alternative download for those who don't use torrents.

* A few new meshes such as thicker grass and rye

This mod was created in a period of 2 weeks so don't expect a complete overhaul and don't expect every texture be perfect.

It was meant to be a small replacer for my personal use for some of the textures i didn't like, but the mod grew into this "partial overhaul".

Have fun and i hope you enjoy the mod.

JDR13 November 6th, 2010 15:10

One of the greatest crpgs ever made just got better.

Nemesis November 8th, 2010 19:49

Glorious

Vurt, you are a golden god. I haven't tried your texture pack yet (as I'm at work and I just found this thread), but I just started playing Gothic 2 again recently (for like the 20th time) and I might just start over just to try this mod! It looks great and I appreciate that you took the time to create something like this when it's been such a long time since this game has been released. Still trying to get co-workers to try Gothic 2: NOTR; depending on how I like the textures, this mod may be canon for me from now on…

Again, thank you SO MUCH!

bemushroomed November 8th, 2010 22:43

Glad you like it :)

Might continue working with this at some point..

Nemesis November 9th, 2010 00:57

That would be awesome - also, Gothic 1 retexturing would be amazing as well, of course. By the way, I've found 7-zip to be an amazing tool for compression. It does almost every compression filetype (with the exception of .ace, I think). Makes it easy for splitting files as well as modifying the compression complexity (storage vs super-compression). Keep up the good work!

bemushroomed November 9th, 2010 01:44

For G1 these guys have done a pretty awesome job so far;

http://www.gothic-reloaded-mod.de

Not sure if its ever going to be relased though. They've worked with it for 3 years i believe, and in that time the team havent created nearly as many textures that i did for this mod (which took me approx. 2 weeks). Their standards are a bit out of proportion.

Neo November 9th, 2010 12:23

I'm really anxious to try this mod out. From the screenshots I've seen it looks incredible. It's hopefully gonna make the best game ever a bit better! One thing, though. The Rapidshare link seems broken. Could you maybe check into that?

bemushroomed November 9th, 2010 13:30

Fixed the Rapidshare link, 10 more downloads are available.

The torrent should be very fast though - 6 seeders + i'm on a 100Mbit fiber LAN connection :)

Nemesis November 9th, 2010 22:03

Yes, the .torrent is probably the ideal way. I forgot to seed that on my media PC before I left for work, but I will when I get back. I got around 250kb/s down or so…

DPB November 14th, 2010 01:12

You're vurt? Heh, I never realised, I'd even replied to before you on the Bethesda forums (my username there is dbankier) regarding your Morrowind mods, which are some of the best graphical upgrades. Small world!

bemushroomed November 16th, 2010 23:28

nice to see some MW community people here :)

Thanks heaps for this vurt, a very noticeable improvement.

Re-installed and started another play through last night, such great gameplay and already I've found whole areas that I'd missed previously. Love it.

UK_John July 6th, 2011 08:09

Thank you thank you thank you - for this great re-texture!

RivianWitch July 11th, 2011 16:44

Ah, when I saw this thread, I pounced on it, because the mods Vurt did for Morrowind are absolutely brilliant!
Will have to try this.

Warmark December 22nd, 2011 05:34

I just bought Gothic II on the GOG sale, so it was great to find this mod right away.
I've played Gothic 3 but this is the first time for G2, good to start out in style :)

Gorath December 27th, 2011 23:16

Have fun. G2 Gold isn't easy to get into, but it's one of the most rewarding games out there. :)

vurt May 7th, 2012 22:44

I will be releasing an update to this mod soon :)

It's amazing how good that engine can still look.

stealth May 7th, 2012 23:38

Looks good. The other day I was thinking about G&G2 and regretting that I never was able to finish them. This might help me push for another try :)

Best of all: no irritating LOD that changes in the distance or pops up just before your eyes. The game has quite large view distance when using ZFOGZONE in the console.

Kostas May 7th, 2012 23:56

Gog should incorporate this in their distributed version. Looks fantastic.

On another note I think I remember you posting something about helping on Gothic RELOADED, has there been any progress on that front?

And while I'm at it  Which of the Risen MDS mods is your Dark Risen TexturePack incompatible with?

vurt May 8th, 2012 00:13

I decided against working with them, for various reasons.

Any graphical mod that changes the flora textures is incompatible with my Risen mod, or rather one will override the other..

So that would be LowPolyTexturmod and possibly LowPolyVegetationTexture-Mod?

vurt May 8th, 2012 00:32

Yes you dont need those if you have my mod installed.

Ahhh, Khorinis. Home sweet home. :)
Looks splendid.

Some of the new features in the update:

* New tree meshes. Pines now comes in 3 variations instead of 1. Conifers comes in 5 variations. The only difference with PB's different versions were sizes, the models were exactly the same.

* New Plant models, reeds, grasses etc.

Suggestions are welcome.

JonNik May 13th, 2012 10:19

Dirtier looking sheep texture ;)

Other than that it looks great! (Must. Resist. Replay. So soon)

badmofo May 14th, 2012 05:59

The flora is looking great, nice work. The thing that's always brought me down is the lack of contrast b/w the ground / terrain textures, and everything else. It's a fantastic landscape with all that verticality, but it ends up looking like a wall of olive green most of the time.

I have no idea what could be done about that, but I'd be interested to see what the world would like if that moss texture that covers most of the place was replaced with something else - fallen autumn leaves?

vurt May 14th, 2012 22:41

That's not done by me, it's in the original game too, but just at one place in the whole game.. Later on, if i edited the level meshes themselves, i'm going to add more things like that.

I think i've just found the most horrible looking mesh in the game thus far:

http://piclair.com/data/sl7qm.jpg

It seriously needs an overhaul hehe

edit, my overhaul: http://piclair.com/data/799hk.jpg

Thrasher May 15th, 2012 00:03

Very cool, Vurt!

vurt May 15th, 2012 04:10

Happy you like it :D

In-game shot of the new tree stump, some retextured mushrooms, grass and a new mesh for that ugly tropical plant in the old world.
http://piclair.com/data/t6wwj.jpg

..oh and new trees in the background.

Yeah, people will complain if it looks too colorful though, but i think it's better than everything turning into a big blur. I'm trying to keep it true to the original, but without being too anal about it (the reason i can't work with the Gothic Reloaded team lol).
