Console Will Not Display?

I've made the necessary change to the gothic ini from TestMode=false to TestMode=true with no result…when I am in the game, the console will not display; at all. I have been trying to use the tilde (~) key to no avail.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that has had this problem. there has to be a fix out there somewhere, I just haven't found it yet.

Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

Punter X January 28th, 2007 01:13

have you tried the following?

"Marvin Mode console display stat fix (… 1.07, 1.08, 1.09)
Press left control key + s simultaneously to display statistics about memory usage.
If you get graphics corruption, you need to do the following simple thing due to a Gothic 3 engine bug.
Make a new empty directory named _compiledImage inside your Gothic 3 "Data" folder, and a new empty directory named _Intern inside this one.
For instance:

C:\program files\Gothic III\Data\_compiledImage\_Intern

Urban legend: in ancient days people thought that you need to decompress the whole _compiledImage.pak in this folder. It is now proven that this is not needed."

DarbyCrashed January 28th, 2007 01:48

thanks Punter, but unfortunatately it didn't work…I just tried pressing ctrl + s simultaneously and it displayed the statistics clearly, without any graphical corruption.

Any other thoughts on how I should proceed?

I should mention that I am running ver. 1.12.

This seems to be one of the most active Gothic 3 forums around and the members really seem to want to help…so I am still hopeful someone will help me figure this out.

Punter X January 28th, 2007 02:07

did you try creating the _Intern folder anyway?

DarbyCrashed January 28th, 2007 02:19

yes, I did…still nothing.

but the folder _intern folder is now full of .ximg files.

unfortunately, the console still won't display at all.

Punter X January 28th, 2007 03:24

having reread your problem i've just realised that i misunderstood your problem as i thought you were having difficulties seeing what you had typed into the console as opposed to bring the console up at all

with that in mind i was wondering if you have tried alternative keys such as "¬" to bring up the console (unfortunately i don't have G3 installed atm or i would check)

just a thought and sorry for the slow reply

DarbyCrashed January 28th, 2007 03:40

I have tried all the keys. Nothing.

getting very frustrated, but thank you for your help so far.

gaboru93 January 28th, 2007 15:57

umm have you tryed the F2 key?
have you done the following? : in game press the button witch you use to see player statistics, then type "marvin" (without quotes) then press button again… now try opening the console: F2 or… (but i don't think so…) "~"

Punter X January 28th, 2007 16:38

isn't that for G1/G2?

gaboru93 January 28th, 2007 17:09

hm maybe it works for him. he should give it a shot (change to test more=true and do what i said… if it doesn't work… well dunno)

gaboru93 January 28th, 2007 17:15

yea what i said is for G1 and 2… for this one you have to change to tesmode=true and press ~

Gorath January 28th, 2007 19:39

MARVIN should also work in G3.
Set testmode back to false, free the keys needed for Marvin and type
marvin
during the game.

Gorath January 28th, 2007 19:48

Another idea:
TestMode=True

Remove everything except keyboard and mouse from your USB port. Then try again.

DarbyCrashed January 28th, 2007 22:40

I have tried all the suggested changes. So far, none of seem to be doing the trick. I have even tried using multiple keyboards.

I have had one new (useless) result. When I do type in "marvin" it says "marvin mode activated" or deactivated, but when I go back to charactor stats page and press F2 or ~ nothing interesting happens. No console.

Very strange. I'm wondering if anyone would mind haviong a look at my ini file and compare check it to their own to see if they can spot any obvious differences.

gaboru93 January 28th, 2007 22:46

ohh… not like that… you go to character stats… type marvin… then exit stats and press F2 press it while you are in game seeing the char…. not in the stats menu… or try ~

gaboru93 January 28th, 2007 22:49

got it now?

DarbyCrashed January 28th, 2007 22:49

I've done that too. Didn't seem to work.

gaboru93 January 28th, 2007 22:51

grrrr what on earth!!!… i have no idea… ask again maybe some of the buys know the solution…

gaboru93 January 28th, 2007 22:51

hey what do u want to use console for?

DarbyCrashed January 28th, 2007 22:56

broken quests and a few of the tougher battles…that and 'goto' commands.

Gorath January 28th, 2007 23:33

Is the CapsLock deactivated?

DarbyCrashed January 29th, 2007 04:51

Yes, the caps lock is off.

I am totally vexed here.

Have just managed to get a working console in 1.12 by:-

1) changing "testmode" to "true" in g3.ini
2) changing "DisplayOnScreen" to "true" in debug.ini
3) adding " _compiledImage" folder to data folder
4) adding "_Intern" folder inside new "_compiledImage" folder

To enter console mode, I use key on top left of keyboard directly under ESC…..this could differ depending on kb settings.

I gather you have already done steps 1,3 and 4. Maybe step 2 makes all the difference???

DarbyCrashed January 29th, 2007 21:15

I just tried changing the debug.ini "DisplayOnScreen" to true, (in conjunction with steps 1, 3, 4) and it doesn't seem to be having an effect.

It was a good sugestion though. I had high hopes after reading your post and making the change to the debug.ini…oh well.

thanks anyway.

boneshaker January 29th, 2007 21:36

sorry to hear that didn't help! It certainly did for me….all I had seen previously was a black screen - the commands worked - but that didn't help much as I couldn't see what I was typing.

What exactly are you seeing when you call up the console? Are you getting the console display or does it just show an unaltered game screen?

PM on way - or will be soon!!

DarbyCrashed January 30th, 2007 06:07

Nothing is happening when I call up the console. When I hit the tiled key, literally NOTHING happens. Not a studder on screen or a graphical change to be noted…..nothing.

boneshaker January 30th, 2007 13:08

Well, if you aren't even getting the black unreadable mess that many people get when activating the console I suppose a keyboard problem….either through layout, or maybe malfunction, seems a possible culprit.

My keyboard system is a bit of a hybrid..UK board layout but running under XP as US! Hitting `( unshifted~) gets me into console OK.

Re PM. Agree that reinstall + all patches does seem like overkill but I did it. As a result I've ended up with a game that (subjectively) feels smoother and for the first time, a useable console.

Didn't realise that the console was so useful, not only can you correct quest glitches, but using " goto " instead of those damned transporter stones, gives a faster and less crash-prone response.

Hope Aspyr soon comes up with an answer for you.

DarbyCrashed February 1st, 2007 05:03

Well guys, it looks like I've exhausted all avenues trying to resolve this issue and its time to give up on it for now. I'll come back to it if/when I decide to resplay with a fresh game.

Thanks to everyone here that took the time to try and help me, it really is appreciated. I love this site.

thanks again.

gaboru93 February 1st, 2007 12:59

no problem bro' hope you will be able to make the console running one day:(

boneshaker February 1st, 2007 18:28

Hey, Courage mon brave!! Don't give up now!

Did you try the reinstall + all patches solution which somehow worked for me? Your saves will be OK… provided you've kept a copy of your Gothic 3 file from Documents and Settings.

Shame if all the effort you've put into solving the problem goes to waste!!!

DarbyCrashed February 6th, 2007 02:31

Could someone post me a link to site that has all the patches?…thinking about trying again this time with all patches.

Gorath February 6th, 2007 05:59

I remember having same problem with games based on Oblivion's engine so I did the same you have to do with these games (to enable the console) and it worked :D
Open the Device Manager in your Windows Control Panel. Find the list called "Human Interface Devices" and uninstall a CIR Receiver (don't worry, Windows will install it after you reboot your computer).
After I did this, the console worked in marvin-mode.

Ainars May 16th, 2017 13:18

The problem actually is that the console only opens if you press TILDE (~), but for some users if you press the button to left from 1, below ESC you get an apostrophe-like symbol ' but if you press SHIFT + that button you get TILDE (~). Solution is simple. Download Microsoft keyboard layout creator and create a new keyboard setting based on your current one, but only change one button - that the TILDE key actually shows the correct symbol (~) without having to press SHIFT. After this you will be able to open console in Gothic 3 after either editing the ini file to have testmode=true or typing marvin really fast.
