Song of Ice & Fire 5th book: A Dance with Dragons out Today… finally

Well it took 6 years, but G.R.R. Martin's A Dance with Dragons is finally out. Fairly large at over 1,000 pages.

Got it today …

About time now excuse me while I read other authors who I enjoy better. For example Chris Bunch/Angus Wells/ and David Gemmell.

Whoot!

Good thing there's the Tower of the Hand for chapter resumes. Had to refresh my memory a bit in regard to books 2-4.

Now excuse me while I lay everything else aside and start reading ADwD. ;)

It's really good so far. I'm about 2/3rds of the way through. A little too much "exoticism" in the eastern world, and I really wish it was wrapping up more… though it does feel like it's finally wrapping up at least a little, versus adding more characters. Some of the Tyrion adventures are getting way over the top however.

Much stronger than the last book.

I am about 1/4 of the way, its good so far but I don't see wrapping yet though. He added one major new character in Tyrion arc. This is will throw off many theories out there…

Finished it about a week ago.

Fun to read, but ultimately disappointing. It's like the whole story is running in place. Tyrion flies around from place to place, but ultimately very little happens. Too many big, big coincidences with characters meeting up out of nowhere… the world is enormously huge, but central characters manage to bump into each other time after time.

Interesting turn of events at the Wall. Interesting plot development with new (young) character. Danerys is supposed to be growing as a person and a leader, but ultimately her story was a long extended treadmill that put her back where she was a couple books ago. Older and wiser, yes, but a bit of a yawn as an overall story arc.

Again, fun to read, but he really should have made this series four books long at the most. I'll read the rest of them if he ever manages to crank 'em out, but I have lost enthusiasm.

I finished it last night and I sort of agree with you. Like you say not a lot happens. I was also disappointed by Tyrion story arc. Only 2 more books to go and I don't see him wrapping up at this pace.

I know Jon Snow is a fan favourite but I never really liked him that much before as a character before this book, so that was welcome change.

Ovenall August 4th, 2011 22:25

I don't believe Jon Snow is done yet. I'm guessing Melisandre will have something to… uh, do to him…

I'm not familar with the books, but I see they're developing a PC game called 'A Game of Thrones: Genesis'. I believe it's actually due out next month.

If you like "well written" fantasy then this is a must read! However you may not like what you read :)
