System Shock 2 '2k7 Update'

Interesting site has a collection of all of the various modernizations for System Shock 2. Check it out here:

System Shock 2 is better than Deus EX, more elaborate than any of the Thief games, scarier then Resident Evil and quite frankly more engrossing than the whole porn DVD collection of planet Earth. In short, it's a fantastic game. A brilliant one too.
… the only realistic solution for the horror-RPG-FPS fan is to drag System Shock 2 kicking and screaming into 2007. Give it a face lift. And an aspirin. How? By injecting it with the proper mods, add-ons and fixes obviously.

Dhruin has posted a newsbit here about this.

Great stuff! Of course I have to vehemently protest that it is more elaborate than Thief *wink*.

If it was SS1 or any of the Thief games, I'd probably give it a try :).

That's a shame, because you have no idea how good SS2 is. Easily as good as any of the Thief games and better than SS1 in some ways.

Corwin March 18th, 2007 04:32

Having played both, I disagree. I found SS1 much more enjoyable, though I did like the second. Guess it comes down to personal preference!!

JDR13 March 18th, 2007 05:22

You must have played it back in the day. I didn't get to play it until just last year, that's why the different view. They're both great games, I'm just saying that if someone doesn't play it because it's not SS1, then they're missing out on a lot of fun.

Jaz March 18th, 2007 10:32

Oh, I did play SS2 twice (as a sneaker and a fighter) and I liked it, but I didn't like it as much as SS1 and Metal Age - so personally I see no need to replay a modded version. The organic level was not to my taste; it somehow killed immersion for me, but I enjoyed the SS1 remembrance level near the end. I like these trips down memory lane :).

Corwin March 18th, 2007 12:14

Yep, I echo Jaz's comments. I didn't like that level either, but loved the 'flashback' near the end!!

I haven't played the Psi Ops(sneaker) or the Marine yet. I played as the Navy(hacker) guy because it seemed to be the most natural fit for a SS game. I plan on replaying soon as either Psi Ops or Navy again.

Corwin March 21st, 2007 07:06

I played Psi; closest to mage I could find!! :)

curious March 21st, 2007 07:32

@JDR13- you've only played it once?!?!?

@Corwin-if only they had that option in the first one eh;)

Jaz March 21st, 2007 07:33

The hacker/sneaker was my favorite. The SS2 solution to cyberspace reminded me of that of the Shadowrun RPG for SNES.

JDR13 March 21st, 2007 07:49

@ curious Yeah, I've only played SS2 one time so far. No matter how much I enjoy a game, I find it hard to do replays due to time constraints. It's hard enough to keep up with all the new games I want to play.

@Jaz Which military branch did you choose? I consider the Psi Ops to be a sneaker and Navy to be the hacker. They pretty much lable them that way in the manual.

Jaz March 21st, 2007 08:47

I chose the Navy hacker on my first way through. Since storming into battle with guns blazing wasn't an option and I found myself peeking around corners quite often, I dubbed him 'sneaker'. But of course you're right, the Psi guy was supposed to be the sneaker. Never considered that one as an option, however… I'm not a fan of psionics in SF settings.
