So: About All These Side Quests.

I bought this game over two years ago (The Dragon Knight Saga) but never got out of chapter 1 for several reasons (life demands, time, and all these quests). I just now decided to fire it up again and start fresh.

I know that to a degree there is a certain amount of freedom but I also know that if one is not careful the amount of quests can overwhelm you to the point of getting lost in all the details.

I want to avoid the quagmire that I created for myself and enjoy the game. So, how did you handle all these quests without getting bogged down?

Thanks.

crpgnut March 12th, 2014 01:05

Nearly every quest will solve itself if you just wander around long enough. You can basically ignore them and just make sure to talk to the various townspeople every time you're back at their location.

Often mindreading folks will give more quests and more rewards and some folks can be mindread more than once. If a character changes location or is involved in multiple quests, it might be good to give a 2nd mindread. Saving and then mindreading will save you a lot of coin. If the mindread doesn't benefit you, reload. I kept a save that I just called mindread, for these occasions.

Maylander March 12th, 2014 11:21

You might want to do the side quests before you do too much of the main quest. The side quests might just become unavailable at some point..

Thanks for the replies. Now I have one other question that is probably simple in nature but I forget how to do it and even with searching i have not found the answer.

It is this: How do you transfer either a skill or an item to be used in the slots provided that uses keys 1-8? Noobish I know but thanks.

JonNik March 12th, 2014 19:25

Open the menu (either on the inventory or skills screen, doesn't matter) click on the slot, click on the skill tab, select skill, done.

Rills March 18th, 2014 00:10

Worked JonNik, thanks. ;)

I have just defeated Amdusias is Maxos' Temple and the only thing left to do before moving on to Sentinel Island is either return Lovis' Soul Stone or destroying it. Was wondering what other players decided to do; would love to hear your reasoning. Seems Lovis has tons to answer for but so do some of the ghosts and yet some the ghosts were/are innocent.

JonNik March 18th, 2014 06:50

He was a wantonly cruel, murderous, deviant bastard/Tyrant, as you get by digging into the history and talk with the ghosts . A lot of the Ghosts were fine examples of the casual stupid evil you find in mankind but Lovis was a true monster and I'd rather have a couple of dumb mean bastards get a break (after all they did serve their time ;) ) if it gets a few innocents (stupidity or misplaced loyalty was the worst of their crimes) one too.

I let him rot in both my play-throughs ;)

Rills March 18th, 2014 07:10

This game will certainly challenge your moral compass from time to time. I am now on Sentinel Island and doing The Prophecy which causes an ethical dilemma. :)

JonNik March 18th, 2014 07:40

Yeah, for all the levity you can usually find in their games Larian does try to put its finger on more "serious" or relevant themes than your average run of the mill hack and slasher.

That they do so without taking their selves too seriously (while still keeping in character and doing it in a tasteful way, generally speaking) is only a good thing in my book.

Their games are a wonderful change of pace from the usual miserablist Gothic fantasies (games ranging from PST to Dark Souls I guess) or grim apocalyptic tales of defeat (Lately the Banner Saga) that I am usually taken with. :) I believe the only one that does it better imo, is PB (the kind of gritty dry humor they interject in their games is a bit more suited to my temperament than the somewhat wacky Larian one).

Ooops got myself rambling a bit. Apologies. You just reminded me that I need to get down to finishing my 2nd play-through one of these days, so I can finally play DKS :)

Maylander March 18th, 2014 10:57

I freed the ghosts, as they were innocent. Besides, the reward from Lovis wasn't all that if I recall correctly.

crpgnut March 18th, 2014 15:02

I freed Lovis, as he's a ghost after my own heart :D

Rills March 18th, 2014 23:47

Well I went with Lovis but if I had to do it all over I believe I would side with the ghosts. And Maylander is right the reward isn't all that great. :P

Anyway, finally was able to defeat Laiken and now I am a dragon defending my tower but -- ugh -- I am never good at FPS and those enemy towers shred me. Is there a way to heal the Dragon aspect? Any tactics I should employ? Thanks.

JonNik March 18th, 2014 23:49

Open the inventory and use a healing potion ?

Later you will get a relevant power too…

P.S. I used to get near the towers and burn them up with the dragon breath. Use space for a short burst in flight (i.e to move close to burn and them back or to dodge sideways)

Rills March 19th, 2014 01:13

Well I figured it out by checking my skills and dropping the Dragon Heal that was there into slot 2 (duh me). What is weird is that even though it says I have a skill point in the Dragons Breath the game would not allow me to drop it into a skill slot.

Anyway, I am now exploring the Throne Room. Btw, how does one store gems, ore, rocks, and herbs/plants whereby they can be transferred to your workers? I need the space before exploring further.

Sorry for all the questions but this game is not clear on a number of game mechanics. Thanks.

Update: Never mind, got the answer from another source.

JonNik March 19th, 2014 23:43

No problem about the questions. Keep them coming. Just so long as I remember to check back here or my eye falls on the thread personally speaking ;)

Rills March 20th, 2014 04:45

Okay here is one for you (or anyone): How do I get pass the anti-dragon barriers to move along this game? As a Dragon you can't fly high enough over the mountain ranges.

In human form I have tried walking and swimming to no avail.

JonNik March 20th, 2014 06:19

Through the various teleporting platforms.

They are linked in pairs. You use one and teleport to the next, then turn a knob on the next to change the next hop. Your final target is to teleport within the port.

The correct sequence/path escapes me right now but I Imagine that this is something you want to discover yourself (expect a couple of tough battles in human form on the first few hops). If not let me know and I'll see If I have time to fire the game up to check (no promises ;) ).

Or someone else remembers the exact sequence ?

Rills March 20th, 2014 06:29

The only teleporting platforms I can access at the moment is the one next to Simeon the Blind Philosopher and it tells me that it is inactive and I can't activate it.

I have decided to attack the ballistas and nests even as they are behind the barrier. Got one ballista down and a nest but then I died so I called it a night. :P

JonNik March 20th, 2014 06:43

No I am pretty certain that there is one that will get you within the first Bunker.

Ofcourse you also have stuff that you can do before that too. Met the Patriarch yet i.e. ?

JonNik March 20th, 2014 07:53

As I doubt I will have time to actually fire it up today I googled this (sounds accurate re. the teleporter's location) Copy pasting it here:

Spoiler – Bunker

You should probably do the Patriarch first though.
Spoiler – For the location look for a favorite game staple in regards to hiding entrances

Rills March 21st, 2014 22:18

Thanks that helped a great deal. Now I am trying to deal with Zagan. This has got to be the worst quest in this entire game due to this poorly poorly planned and executed design. Sooooo many people have had issues with this one even with the game set on Casual Mode.

It is cramped, poorly lit due to color scheme, and chaotic. Dungeon and Dragons players have a name for it: Party Killer.

JonNik March 22nd, 2014 00:08

You are welcome :)

Zagan  The name doesn't ring any bells….

Spoiler Alert:

It is the demon in the well at High Hill. You get this quest from Beatrice after you take care of the troll issue. The village offers 2 malachite gems as payment but if you read her mind as she gives the request/quest it jumps to 4.

Seriously though it is a real pain and as I said a ton of players have had issues with it.

JonNik March 22nd, 2014 00:40

Right I remember!

Yeah that is a tough one, and a bit unexpected at that point.

I am trying to remember how I beat him… I recall upgrading Dragon spirit and shield to 4 hitting shield immediately, rushing him and taking him close with firebreath. Was still tough…

There is also a place high up in the cave where you can take human form (not sure if that helps any though i.e. will he regain full HP when switching to heal ?)…

P.S. I also had a lot of pieces of Dragon armor by then and that certainly helped I believe.

Hmm, memory hazy. I might have dealt with the nest first to eliminate distractions…

P.S. And while trying every trick in the book throw in a friend to draw some of the fire (after clearing the nest) in there too ;) It took me a fair few tries to pull off I recall (Only Dark Souls does that to me usually ;) )

Rills March 25th, 2014 06:26

Putting Zagan on hold for a bit.

So far so good except I am not sure if I got a game bug. I have been collecting the Zepplen Parts for one of the quests. I handed in the parts as I found them and in my last play I turned over my most recent finds and the guy declared we can now get in the air (or some such thing). I then reminded him that Crabbe needed to be picked up and he said he would send a ship right away. I went back to Crabbe and he said he would wait. I then went back to the Zepp guy and it was as if nothing has happened. Went back to Crabbe and nothing; he is still waiting.

Also, does the skill that increases your effectiveness with fighting with one sword negate the skill with sword and shield? In other words do they cancel each other out if you put points in both or do they scale together?

Thanks.

I do not think you will see Crabbe leave or anything. If the quest is cleared from your log and you got your reward thats it iirc.

No I do not believe so, that would make no sense.
(would you unlearn a skill if you learned another one i.e. ?)

JDR13 March 25th, 2014 18:45

Afaik, none of the skills in DKS negatively affect other skills in any way.

@Rills- I also had a bitch of a time with Zagan. Take out the demon generators asap so you can eventually just concentrate on him alone. Also use that area above like JonNik suggested.

crpgnut March 25th, 2014 22:19

I remember my zombie mage helping with Zagan. The zombie would absorb some hits from the flying creatures while I recuperated iirc. It's been awhile. It seems like there was a safe place below that you could drop the zombie, but I can't remember.

Rills March 26th, 2014 08:51

I am looking forward to Larian's next installment but I pray they don't have Zagan type fiascoes, that and jumping squares in mid air.

As for Crabbe it seems there is a time delay and he eventually shows up in the Harbor town.

Almost done all the Broken Valley quests, etc. Just need to get to Aleroth plus a few minor things… like Zagan :P

JonNik March 26th, 2014 09:03

Well you are fast approaching the point I ran out of steam in my last play-through (early last summer. Done Aleroth and most of the Flying fortresses).

I really need to pick this up again, give up on the optional Flying Fortresses and go ahead on the very enticing DKS expansion :-/ (OT: When Dark souls lets me that is! I was almost ready to pick this up again spurred by your thread but then started a third DS replay in a moment of weakness ) I am definitely going to give it another shot this summer…

Rills March 27th, 2014 06:00

Hey guys. What do you think about armor and armor sets? Did you find it was advantageous to try and wear as many of the pieces of one set or was mix and match a better way to go? So far I have held off using charms or enhancing weapons and armor in order not to "waste" my charms and malachite gems (though I have enchanted my earrings).

Also, does your battle tower and items transfer from the Ego Draconis section of this game over to Flames of Vengeance?

@JonNik, I started this game two summers ago but laid it aside for a long time. Tried restarting afresh but I soon just picked up after my last save from my previous play. Glad I did.

I believe sets are worth it generally speaking, iirc I went quite a while with the Orobas set i.e. had some very significant set bonuses.

Considering that all other resources other than malachite gems are readily available and you can disenchant and re-enchant an item I see absolutely no reason to hold back (just keep the malachite gems until you get the 10th level enchantments). You could say it is part of the fun (*) but it also helps in the game. I often updated my enchantments and the peripheral items (rings, amulets, belts etc) as I found new ones or changed the enchantments to the old.

Actually a big factor of choosing gear is not only the base enchantments value but how many slots it has available…

Remember to update the armor and weapons of your servants before sending them out to hunt for ingredients. Also heal them if they get themselves wounded after a run.

(* although too much variety and having to change your gear too often is not something I enjoy but Div2's balance is not bad)

P.S. Have you done the sidequests to upgrade the workshops/trainer ? Also worth it imo…

Yes, each character type (melee, ranged, magic) has one set each from what I recall, and that's basically the best armor you can get in the game. You get most of the items from doing flying fortresses near the end.

Rills March 31st, 2014 22:15

Well success guys. Finished the original game and now I am about done Flames of Vengeance. Thanks to everyone for all your help and input.
