Ah, that's entirely different beast indeed.
I failed to read the caption with the listing. Apologies master, I spoke too rashly. ;)

Zloth September 27th, 2014 05:12

Crusader Kings 2, an RPG??

HiddenX September 27th, 2014 08:06

Crusader King games are a Dynasty Simulators - I know.

If I think a game is interesting for RPG-fans then I'm adding games with just a few CRPG elements, too. So we have some RTS games in the list and a few Space Sims, too. Many Watchers like and play these games so I see no harm done :)

(I'm always adding the game genre in the description in such cases)

HiddenX September 27th, 2014 13:19

I need more opinions about the following games:

Krater (should be much better now than at release time)
Drox Operative
Din's Curse
Darkstone (doesn't aged so well IMHO)
Tales of Maj'Eyal
Fate
Titan Quest
Path of Exile
Torchlight

Action CRPGs (Hack&Slay) are not my primary domain…

Are they worth a RPGWatch recommendation?

greywolf00 September 27th, 2014 17:20

IMO, the problem with Krater is it's a RT squad based game where you have to select individual people in order to use their specials. It's very easy for a medic to pull aggro and get killed before a tank can grab it back. I enjoyed it for about 8 hours before the design drove me nuts. Some people will like, others won't. Wasn't buggy for me.

Tales is a great turned based rogue-like with mods. I would recommend it in a heartbeat even though I'm generally not a fan of the genre.

Torchlight 2 is much better than the first imo. My favorite recent addition to the genre and very moddable. I would recommend it.

Most people love TQ, I didn't find it very interesting, but there's enough fans it's probably worth a recommendation (and Grim Dawn is similar so propably worth a look when it releases).

PoE lacks the polish of D3, but is far more fun if you ask me. Character skills can be freely chosen and the skill forest is absurd. They've tweaked the loot options and seem to have decreased the XP penalty on the final 2 difficulties, which were my top complaints about it. Still very easy to make useless builds. The new Forsaken Master's content is a refreshing injection to the game.

Only put 4 hours into Din's Curse. Much more combat heavy but the nonstop options of randomly generated quests is rather unique. Graphics are very dated. Dungeon sizes are pretty small so makes it an easy game to do in bursts. Lots of options to tweak a game to your liking.

HiddenX September 27th, 2014 20:00

So I added:

Crusader Kings II
Starpoint Gemini 2
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
Nethergate: Resurrection
Mount & Blade: Warband
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat
Beyond Good & Evil
Path of Exile
Tales of Maj'Eyal
Gothic 3

113 games

HiddenX September 28th, 2014 11:23

I need information about:
7 Days to die
Endless Legend
Terraria
Life is feudal

To buy or not to buy?
RPGWatch recommendation worthy or not?

GhanBuriGhan September 28th, 2014 11:41

Both Torchlight and Age of Titans are among the few action RPGs I have played for some amount of time, mostly on the recommendation of people here, IIRC. Both are fun for what they are - Torchlight was good streamlined colorful fun, tickles the gear acquisition syndrome nicely. AoT is solid but lives mostly off the Greek Mythology setting, imho.
In my opinion both are worth a cautions recommendation to fans of the ARPG genre, or for someone looking for a "simple" diversion.
No experience with the rest.

HiddenX September 28th, 2014 18:27

Avernum 4,5,6 added
Titan Quest
Titan Quest - Immortal Throne
Metro 2033 redux
Two Worlds II
The Longest Journey

121 games

wolfing September 29th, 2014 06:03

Great list. I know there are some games that are not purely RPGs but have some RPG elements, so I agree with everything in the current list except for one game… The Longest Journey. I don't think there's anything RPG in that game as from what I remember it's a pure adventure game. Not that it's a bad game, but if we add a game that has no RPG elements, then it opens the door to basically every 'good' game ever made. Personally I would remove that one game from the list.

I would also add Dungeons & Dragons Online, it's an MMO RPG and I know there's a RPGWatch group of players that play it (I'll let one of them say what should be the description for that one).

HiddenX September 29th, 2014 19:01

@Wolfing - I have put two adventures in the list: the action adventure Beyond Good and Evil and the point and click adventure The Longest Journey.
It's very interesting, because these two games (among others) have the highest
"+1 like votes".
I'll add adventures from time to time, because I know that many Watchers like them and we speak about them here, too.
But only the creme de la creme worthy for RPG-fans like Grim Fandango, Broken Sword, Gabriel Knight, LA Noir, …

I'll always add that there are NOT CRPGs:

Beyond Good and Evil™
Quote:

"One of the best Action Adventures out there. An underrated masterpiece with a female protagonist. Get out of your genre box and play this one!"

The Longest Journey
Quote:

"April Ryan is one of the most memorable characters in the history of adventure games. Not an RPG, but you RPG fans will like it anyway - for sure :)"
PS:
Nearly all game elements of adventures are game elements of CRPGs, too.
Only two things are missing: Character progression through stats and a full fledged inventory that is not for puzzle items, only.

PSPS:
For a very purist list use the Codex one - not bad, but a little boring for my taste:

Do we get paid if they buy games from the list ?

mogwins September 30th, 2014 09:11

Sadly not. There was talk of referral payments earlier in the year, but Valve have decided against it. At least for now.

ilm September 30th, 2014 09:13

We could add a clicky link in the description ? To GOG :p

Lord of the Rings: War in the North
http://store.steampowered.com/app/32800/

More a light RPG/Action game. It had an excellent story and theres a few of us on here that enjoyed it quite a bit.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
http://store.steampowered.com/app/245280/

Ok, this is an adventure game but damn it had a good story. I really enjoyed playing it. I understand if you don't add it.
