The Witcher - Sword of the Witcher Music Video

The Witcher's official website has posted news that a music video clip from the band VADER which combines some trailer footage with performance video and music composed by the band has been released, along with a link to a streaming video at Wirtualna Polska
Quote:

This is how VADER’s frontman – Peter – recalls work done on the clip: “A couple of months ago, CD Projekt RED approached us and asked whether we’d be interested in recording a music track relating to the RPG game “The Witcher”. The game itself, its “feel” and atmosphere, as well as the rather atypical challenge were enough to give it a go. We recorded the “Sword of the Witcher” track in May, and on the 10th of July, with the help of Inbornmedia from Wrocław, shot some videos in the castle in Bolków. To help us in the undertaking we received some music samples from the game’s soundtrack.
More information.

Nice song, and it really fits great with the dark atmosphere of the game. Have to remember that band's name.
Great job guys of Vader

vidder September 6th, 2007 10:12

yes, excellent. not too brutal/deathish. maybe it will be on the witcher ost - cd?

Guest September 6th, 2007 13:30

Whoa! Vader is a great Death Metal band. I especially recommend
"The Art of War" EP…
http://www.metalreviews.com/reviews/detail.php3?id=3115

This is cool :D I'll have to check out that song.

Guest September 6th, 2007 13:43

You can watch that thing on youtube too. Just put "the witcher vader" in the search box.

Well… yeahh… the song was nice enough but nothing compared to the stuff vader did on "the art of war" for example. the riff was pretty weak - could've been much more technical & in-your-face. Also a few blast-beats here and there would've not hurt :D

txa1265 September 6th, 2007 14:02

I think that is pretty cool stuff, like the mix of themes in there … that sort of thing works really well here as it did with Bloodlines …

Prime Junta September 6th, 2007 17:32

Weird. I had Witcher filed under "Mmm, interesting," but after seeing this video…

… I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

Guest September 6th, 2007 18:14

Yeah, this one sure seems like a very interesting game.

Elwro September 6th, 2007 21:05

CDP's head Michal Kicinski says here that Nightwish is also involved in some way.

Prime Junta September 6th, 2007 21:29

Marketing cooperation. Their music video "Amaranth" will be included with the game. It's all over the German web. (Google nightwish witcher and see for yourself.)

xSamhainx September 6th, 2007 21:46

That was actually really tame for Vader. I'm actually more of a Nightwish fan myself, but i'm kinda bummed when it comes to the choice of their new singer. Kinda weak, she's got nuttin on classical powerhouse Tarja imho. Cool tho, I'm glad this project is metal-infused regardless, now i know it's gonna be awesome!

Agreed, but I've been listening to Amaranth a couple times now (more than a dozen actually) and I must say she's growing on me. Different from Tarja of course, but everything still sounds very "Nightwishish" and Annette's voice actually fits quite well.

Pre-loading the Vader video now (slow Internet connection atm :( )

Tom Ohle September 7th, 2007 00:20

Too bad this stuff won't be included with the North American release, huh? :( I'll try to get some more content from the CD out there.

Melvil September 7th, 2007 01:03

ehem…cheesy as hell?

Very bad news-:(-I don't mind missing out on the naughty postcard game, of course, but I'd really enjoy this music content. Is it supposed to be "too mature" for us over here? ;)

The new one is not bad, but for me Tarja was the main attraction, and pretty
much defined their sound. Sad to see her go…

Jabberwocky September 10th, 2007 22:59

Wow.. I'm a Nightwish fan and I didn't even know that Tarja left the group! (Hey, I just listen to the music, I don't follow all the latest news on everyone..) Well I watched the Amaranth video and I must say that the new lead singer is cool, but she doesn't have that haunting voice that Tarja had. Their background choir music is going to sound a lot more generic from now on I'm afraid. Still, that song is awesome and I can't wait for the new album!

@ Melvil: Okay, I'll bite… yes, maybe metal music and videos look "cheesy as hell" to some, but face it… 99% of all video game scenarios would BE 'cheesy as hell' if they became real life. If it's metal music in general you think is cheesy… well… there is a lot of that out there, but there are some groups that have the most intelligent lyrics in all music. Opeth reigns supreme!!

So what's with the girl at the very end of the Vader video?.. And I love how the first thing Geralt does is check her teeth… Ah, what a romantic he is! lol

xSamhainx September 10th, 2007 23:50

I got Blackwater Park recently by Opeth, and it just isnt sinking in. It's my first Opeth cd, and I wanted to see what all the hubbub was about since I know quite a few rabidly devout Opeth fans. It's not bad, I just dont particularly like it.

I do like the vocalist, Mike Akerfeldt. He did some vocals for Katatonia, I really enjoy his work on Brave Murder Day. I'm going to give BWP another spin right now and see if I feel any different, it's been on ice for a couple weeks

Geist September 11th, 2007 09:22

I've never been able to get into Opeth either - great lyrics, but musically it's not really my thing. The Vader video wasn't bad, but I think I would have preferred Nightwish for the actual soundtrack, perhaps with Finntroll or Amon Amarth doing the battle music.:)
As for Tarja, yes she has an amazing voice and it's sad that she's gone, but if even 1/2 of what Tuomas says in his open letter to her is true, I can't say I blame the band for firing her.

xSamhainx September 11th, 2007 16:19

Battlelore would have been good too, except that theyre exclusively Tolkien-metal

Jabberwocky September 11th, 2007 16:20

Blackwater Park was my second Opeth album. The first one I bought was Damnation. If anyone knows anything about that particular album, you know that it doesn't have a single growled lyric, and is actually very subdued. I bought it completely blind, not even knowing that Opeth was a metal band… Anyway, I fell in love with Damnation, and immediately bought Blackwater Park. I was completely shocked when I heard the darker side of Akerfeldt's voice. It took a while for the growling to grow on me, but I was drawn instantly to the melodies.

Everyone has their own opinion, and yours is just as valid as mine. Personally, I appreciate the way Akerfeldt moves from destructive fervor to sublime mellowness. It makes me think of someone exploding with the emotion of deep angst, being completely spent from such, and then pausing in a moment of lucidity and reflection.

@ Sammy: Pay special attention to "The Drapery Falls" - The crystal clear words "Spiralling into the ground again, like autumn leaves left in the wake to fade…" with an explosion of drums on the last word.
Also listen to the haunting echoes and pensive guitar riffs near the beginning of the last track "Blackwater Park," and see how it builds into one of the most amazing finales of all time.

Anyway, not sure exactly what you don't like about the album, but if it's too harsh for you I would recommend "Damnation" - it's totally mellow and as a result shows off the diversity and sheer talent for songwriting the band has. If you find any redeeming quality in the aforementioned albums at all, then I would wholeheardtedly recommend their latest - "The Grand Conjuration." Not quite as memorable as "Blackwater Park" imho, but awfull darn close.

xSamhainx September 11th, 2007 19:55

I'm warming a little more to it. I dont have a problem with growls, in fact I prefer that style of vocals most times. Some cds just dont click with me at the time I buy them, so they get shelved. I bust them out again in a few months, and sometimes it's the best thing Ive ever heard. It all has to do with my particular personal situation at the time. Do the lyrics click with my mindset, am I into extreme heaviness or am I mellow at the time, fast crunch or slow doom, am I looking for male and female alternating vocals or something different? Whats my stress level? LOL

Happened with My Dying Bride's "Turn Loose the Swans". Hated it the first couple weeks I owned it. Picked it up 6 months later, now it's in my top 10 of all time. I'm strange like that!

Werent we talking about some game or something/???

Jabberwocky September 11th, 2007 22:57

Lol. Yeah, so um…. That Witcher game looks cool. I'll probably get that.

Now back on topic j/k!: When I mentioned Opeth's latest album I was talking about "Ghost Reveries," "The Grand Conjuration" is just one track on that album. My bad..
When you mentioned male/female alternating vocals my first thought was of Lacuna Coil. They are probably already in your collection but if not, drop everything right now and go buy one of their albums!!

magerette September 11th, 2007 22:59

Games? There was a game in this thread? I've been using it to make notes on possible heavy deathy metal groups I might need to know about for that CD I plan to play during my cremation. :)

zakhal September 12th, 2007 02:04

Imho the new nightwish isnt so bad i.e "bye bye beautiful" and "the poet and the pendulum" are quite good. Anette looks like a teenager in the amaranth allthough shes 36(!). I thought it was an error when I read it from the bio. I was sure she was like early 20s.

Tarja is releasing his own single "I walk alone" just right now and album "My winter storm" later this fall:

Quote:

is currently working on her first recordings as a solo artist, with a studio deep in the Irish countryside the initial home for these sessions – a studio that has already played host to the likes of R.E.M., Michael Jackson and the Manic Street Preachers.

Tarja’s debut single, ‘I Walk Alone’, is being lined up for a mid of October release, with the full album, ‘My Winter Storm’, due to follow on November 9th. Both the single and the album are being produced by Daniel Presley (Faith No More, Jewel, The Breeders), who has been joined in the studio by a truly stellar line-up of musicians: Doug Wimbish on bass (Living Colour, Annie Lennox, Joe Satriani, Jeff Beck, Madonna, Rolling Stones), Alex Scholpp on electric guitars (Farmer Boys) and Earl Harvin on drums (Seal, Pet Shop Boys, Air), a player personally selected by Tarja after she saw him stealing the show at a Seal concert. Keyboards & programming, meanwhile, are being provided by Torsten Stenzel, whose previous credits include Nelly Furtado, Moby, Tina Turner, Vanessa Mae and more.
Apparently the single was on TV last week but I havent seen it yet.

EDIT: Heres it in the you tube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCuqT2H_-w0

The songs are a bit cheezy. Nightwish has new songs like "Bye bye beautiful" to tarja and now tarja is doing "I walk alone". And som say that only computer games are cheezy so…(hahaa managed to go back to topic)

Certainly there are games that have non-cheezy proportions i.e silent hill 2 comes to mind instantly. I did a lot of thinking while playing and after finishing it. It had pretty heavy themes like child abuse.

xSamhainx September 12th, 2007 05:31

Vibeke Stene left Tristania as well, what's it with these classical metal dames breaking our hearts! And people thought that she was going to be the new NW singer too, what a doublecross that would have been. Oh the Drama!!!

Arhu September 12th, 2007 16:30

Okay folks, what Jabberwocky wrote about Opeth a couple posts back made me think of Ambeon again. I don't know Opeth, I don't even know if it's possible to compare them, and it's not really metal either (some kind of darkish, progressive folk metal), but I dare you all to listen to Ashes by Ambeon. More samples and info on the official homepage.

The time I've spent listening to that beautiful voice must be an eternity.

Aside from that, it would probably be a good idea to move some posts of this thread to a new "Metal" thread or so. Then again, the topic is a music video, so maybe all is fine. ;)

magerette September 12th, 2007 16:48

Not only fine, an education. :) Nice, almost eerie vocals.

Jabberwocky September 13th, 2007 16:15

@ Arhu. The first two notes from her voice and I was hooked. Where can I get the whole album? The website says that it is out of print!! Maybe I'll search eBay later on.
Anyway, that pretty much sums up my favorite genre: "some kind of darkish, progressive folk metal." ;) It's weird because I'm about the most normal looking person there is… no piercings, no tattoos, short hair, and I'm a positive upbeat person… but I really get into Goth music and metal rock. (Although my musical tastes run the gamut of just about everything, except for country.)
This thread got me listnening to Opeth again - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Still_L…Opeth_album%29 . The album "Still Life" is medieval story of a man who is opposed to the (I assume) Catholic Church and is therefore branded a heretic. He returns years later to the town where his lover resides and finds that she has become a nun. The album follows the course of his trying to persuade her to come away with him. The church, however, learns of his return and forms a witch hunt to end his life once and for all….

As for that cheesy notion… there's some in every genre of music… depending on your point of view, some can be cheesier than others. For instance, imho, a story of gothic romance and poetic lyrics are much less cheesy than a country song that sings "She thinks my tractor's sexy!" There's a whole lot of cheesyness going on in R&B too when they start throwing in all kind of jargon describing people shaking their backsides… but again that's just mho ;)

It probably bears mentioning that the singer was 14 when she provided her voice and lyrics to the project, which I find kind of amazing.

Yes, the album is out of print, which is very unfortunate. You could write to Arjen directly and persuade him to bring it back into print. ;) Otherwise I guess you do have to look elsewhere like eBay…

Ashes is my second favorite from the album, my number 1 is the first track.. pure bliss. One of those rare songs, which when first heard makes you stop doing what you are doing and just listen - usually I let my music play in the background. The sample from the site isn't too good unfortunately.

On topic: The Witcher looks interesting indeed! ^^

She was that monster (Shtriga) before, her body was almost transformed back but not the mind - so he checked if she still has teeth, but she attacked Geralt with claws ( if you look at every clip you will se that one of her hands is still Shtrigish (you can do it in Windows Movie Maker). It was described in A.Sapkowski's book ,,The Last Wish" - It is first book about the Witcher.

Ok, thanks. I just watched the whole trailer (not the music video) and saw how the story played out so now I understand.

Sweet! I would have taken it for myself but Darth Potatohead doesn't exactly fit with the whole "Jabberwocky" motif.

"The Witcher" and Vader … two things (out of few) that make me proud of being a Pole :] By the way, the funny thing is that "The Witcher" is probably going to be the first good game that comes out of Poland and it will be based on the best fantasy book ever written in Poland ;]
