RPGWatch New Logo

Alright guys/gals it's time for a new thread for suggestions for a New Logo. So far we already have two submissions from HiddenX , and are looking for more options.

Option #1

http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/attac…1&d=1424299405

Option #2

http://www.rpgwatch.com/forums/attac…3&d=1424515225

JDR13 February 22nd, 2015 19:41

I like the 2nd logo up top.

A variation…

joxer February 22nd, 2015 20:21

While I'll vote for no change when and if it comes to it, I actuayll like the third pic. First too and the fourth one smell like phonegames, the third one is fancy enough to be unmistakenbly nonphonegame. :D

The banner version of the new Watchtower…

For Jaz:

Couchpotato February 22nd, 2015 21:32

All three look good HiddenX. If anyone else has any ideas please share them.

figment February 22nd, 2015 22:05

I agree with Joxer with prefer no change at the moment over change. I like the 3rd one for the light theme with the rock castle over the watch tower but the Jaz variant is decent. I normally use the Dark theme and none of those go well with the dark theme.

For the dark theme, I would probably ask for something like a starry night. Maybe a moon (or 2 or 3 colored ones if you want subtle emphasis on fantasy/scifi). I would probably pick the color palette from something like NASA's Earth's City Lights as that matches the Dark theme colors well.

One more for today:

Couchpotato February 22nd, 2015 22:22

Well the site has used used the same old logo for over ten years now.

A site redesign was always planned based on old threads in our private forum. It always ended up failing because of the time needed, and no one could decide what to change.

Still your right we will need one for the dark setting also.^^

Nerevarine February 22nd, 2015 22:27

Wow, I really like that last one HiddenX!

Thrasher February 22nd, 2015 22:44

Those are all nice, HiddenX! I think I prefer an ocean overlook. :)

Toff February 23rd, 2015 03:01

They all look good but I do prefer the castle to the watchtower logos.

Morrandir February 23rd, 2015 10:38

I like the one from posting #3 best, but I think we should use a banner where a square logo (for other usage, like Steam group) can easily be derived from by simply cutting off the landscape/sea.

These two are the best in my opinion, but I just feel like the colours are slightly too strong if you were to put it at the top of the site.

The current logo is very visible, but doesn't "take over". These new ones are very pretty and much nicer than the current one, but feel "too much" for me.

Still, if we are going for change, I would go for those two quoted.

DArtagnan February 23rd, 2015 11:31

The top one in Pladio's post above (#15) is my favorite so far.

Myrthos February 23rd, 2015 12:26

You have to keep in mind that the logo needs to fit the color scheme or the color scheme needs to fit the logo design.
We have two color schemes per site, a light and a dark one. Currently the color is blue for RPGWatch, orange/brown for IndieWatch and Green for The Locus Inn.
The right hand side of the log is a filler with a single color. The reason for that is that we place the ads banner there. So the ones in posts 5, 8 and 12 will not work as the text will be obscured by the ads banner (when it will return, that is).

Placing the ads banner somewhere below the logo would also be an option, but we need to go to a wider banner in that case, as the small ads banner looks rather silly at that position.

wiretripped February 23rd, 2015 13:01

Yeah, I like the proposed banners by itself (except for the dark one with the NASA pic), but I think they are way too colorful to actually use as banners. They'd look a little tacky, I think. Personally, I'd prefer a more sleek (and professional looking) design (that would fit both website themes).

So, of the ones proposed I like the two first (in Couch's original post) the best, with #1 having a slight edge over #2.

Nothing wrong with the current graphics, me thinks.

Getting mono-colored versions is 10 seconds in Photoshop:

They can look nice, too.

Or more artificial:

My two cents: Of all the ones so far, my favorite is option #1 way back in the first post.

I like the castle as it gives a medieval feeling, which seems apt for a rpg site. I also like the font and blue sky of that one, but I can see if a darker theme was wanted, the blue sunny sky could be replaced by a stormy day or night.

The others just seem too busy and colorful to me, and I don't get why wilderness scenes such as the desert or sea fit the site's theme.

You can use every weather/sky you like:

For example I used the sky of the river Ruhr picture (that's where I live :))

I think you guys should go with a game of thrones feel

http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Night%27s_Watch

The Rpg Watch is a order dedicated to holding the Wall against decline, defending the realms of men from what lies beyond the Wall…

Corwin February 24th, 2015 00:23

No, that's more what the Codex claims to be all about!! :)

Aubrielle February 24th, 2015 03:56

I definitely dig the second one posted. The first has that weird font you see on dinosaur stuff…

And is there any way we could get the fantasy tower like on the second one? I know our old tower we've used forever is the, like…state forest fire tower thing, but I almost feel like that's too modern? I definitely like HiddenX's coastal tower…it looks more medieval/fantasy rpg-esque, which I feel like is sort of the essence of what we are…:)

That's just my thought. I know good graphics cost money and we have to use what we can, but I'd love to see us have something that captures our essence the best.

I ran into this problem really quickly when I tried to help with the graphics. It made me chicken out, so I have to hand it to Hidden for continuing to make graphics and trying to get things to work…

Drithius February 24th, 2015 04:05

Don't really see anything wrong with the current one either. And, if people are absolutely itching for greener grass, I don't see much relevance in the generic ocean/desert landscapes.

Either way, don't really care much. Just don't make it a purple, flash-based monstrosity out of the 90's por favor.

I think the current one is fine as well. What I like about it is that its more restrained compared to a lot of the alternatives. It has a little bit of splash of color near the tower, then nothing. I dunno, it looks like the new ones all have a lot more going on in them than the old standby. Maybe a hybrid of the new castle replacing the fire watch tower with the older and cleaner design would be cool.

I'll shut up now, lol. I don't know why, but these small and relatively trivial things interest me.

I like that one too, good stuff. I just am not a fan of that font.

Nerevarine February 24th, 2015 06:13

I am certainly guilty of nostalgia and can be resistant to change at times, so I really can't get up on a high horse to preach to those who don't want to see the old logo changed.

That being said, I've always found the logo to be…bland. It certainly has a bit of charm, but I would like to see the logo brightened up a bit. HiddenX's submissions are fittingly understated, and are a vast improvement in that they have a level of expression and life that the old one simply lacks. Just my two cents anyway!

Zerotown February 24th, 2015 09:37

I like the banners with the 'Castle-like' tower. I've always felt the original watchtower a bit off. My preferred banner is the very first one. I quite like the font used.

GothicGothicness February 24th, 2015 10:11

I think it'll be good to keep the same tower for brand recognizance.

Pladio February 24th, 2015 10:59

I actually like the old tower… It's become the brand I think. But rebranding is not always a bad thing.

As for what tower to use, I dunno. On one hand, yes, the medieval tower is a little more fitting for the website IMHO, yet the current one is a nice alternative (as medieval towers are rather cliché, no?). :)
