Pillars of Eternity and Cities: Skylines Earn $18.5 Million in Three Weeks

Paradox Interactive has announced that Obsidian’s Pillars of Eternity and Colossal Order’s Cities: Skylines have collectively generated $18.5 million in revenue within the past three weeks.

Anyone like to take guess what is the split between Skylines and pillars? 50:50 or more towards Skylines for now (going by steam where skyline is number 2 and pillars number 4)?

I believe the major bugs will kill future sales of Eternity unless they get them fixed extremely fast. Obsidian is infamous for game-breaking bugs and now that the word is out that they've done that yet again…..

Drithius April 1st, 2015 20:14

It's just frustrating all around. You want Obsidian to succeed beyond all measure. But some of these bugs just scream of ineptitude and you begin to wonder what the hell they were doing in the last few months when the 2014 release date got pushed back.

Paradox is very happy either way though.

azarhal April 1st, 2015 20:28

POE is less buggy than Dragon Age Inquisition was at release. The media and some players are really exaggerating the state of the game right now.

Drithius April 1st, 2015 20:42

It's hardly an exaggeration to say I've stopped playing because Eder is a bugged-out god and I refuse to waste my time rolling the dice with subsequent companions.

azarhal April 1st, 2015 20:44

Actually, I doubt that many people stopped playing because of the stat inflation bug. I've seen these things in games before and people exploit the hell out of it, they don't complain about it.

Drithius April 1st, 2015 20:51

Yeah, I don't really know how to respond to that…

Obviously the state of the game is great because exploits are good.

And this is just one of the many reported bugs, the only one I've personally encountered because I really don't care to forge ahead, playing a dumbed-down, inflated stat experience, only to run headlong into something else. Judging by the number of people posting game-altering, game-breaking problems on these forums alone, the game needs to be patched and fast.

DArtagnan April 1st, 2015 21:07

While the game is in much better state than I would have expected from Obsidian, I think calling this kind of game-breaking bug a good thing, because certain people like to exploit broken stuff, is unnecessary reaching.

Just accept that the game isn't perfect and you'll find it much easier to enjoy it, without feeling like you have to defend everything about it.

Game is very good and it's a big hit for Obsidian. Rejoice! But don't be silly about it, please.

I haven't run into any bugs yet in PoE, and maybe that's just pure luck, since I've been playing since Thursday. Only issue I encountered was on day one when my rogue sniper-shot an enemy for over 80 pts in one shot….which to me was an exploit, since no enemy had done anything similar to me. The solution was to sell all my ranged weapons. I also generally only use 3 saves at max.

lostforever April 2nd, 2015 11:50

Since I like to speculate, I will assume a 50:50 split between Skylines and PoE. So that means PoE made $9.25 million on the first 3 weeks. Average price for this game is about $40, so that means it sold about 230k+ copies in the first 3 weeks. I am assuming KS backers are not included in the 3 weeks number since they have already paid so meaning so far PoE has sold around 400k+ copies (230 + 77K). To me 400k is impressive number for game like this :)

Any even if we ignore the number, we are pretty much guaranteed a sequel :)

zahratustra April 2nd, 2015 14:23

So far I haven't had any problems either. The only problem I see is the lack of portraits for skin variety. My character is an Aumaua Cypher with blue skin which is forced to use white skin portrait. Wanted to do a custom companion - dark skinned female human and no joy either!

All I can read from this is Paradox sending a message to the devil:
"look EA, you blew it and now we're getting *your* millions".

As both games are EA Maxis Simcity and EA Bioware Baldur's Gate, won't say clones as they're not, but let's say spiritual successors.

And since Paradox found the herd EA abandoned crying to be milked ASAP, I bet the next game Paradox will publish is Sims "clone" - EA's Sims 4 while not a disaster was a disappointment compared to previous installments. Also in another news thread Jade Empire was mentioned, there is no reason Paradox doesn't produce a similar RPG in similar setting since EA is obviously more interested in pay2win/gambling multiplayer and virtual beggar phonegames.

Competition is good for industry.

I will wait to play POE as I am playing Wasteland 2 right now for the first time. I kickstarted both projects so I am very happy both were made. I did not mind waiting for Wasteland 2 to be patched so I will do the same for POE.

POE does need to get a patch out soon or they are hurting sales. That is a fact.

It's not. There is no sales hurt. There can be sales boost though.
The fact is that a game (any game) needs mod tools soon to boost sales.

I strongly recommend waiting to play Wasteland 2 as they're adding significant gameplay features that will be ready in a few months.

I think they already mentioned that a Sims 'clone' would be a natural next game to publish.

We first talked about taking on the City builder genre 4 years ago.

We, rightly so, came to the insight that it's not something one does in one bold stroke. It's like knocking over a refrigerator - you have to rock it back and forth a few times and then you push it over. It takes time, patience and preparation

Cities In Motion 1 was released in 2011
Cities in Motion 2 was released in 2013.
Cities Skylines was released in 2015.¨

The Life Sim genre is a very, very big fridge. But it's sure one we'd like to knock over. Keep an eye out for our 2016 releases for the first push :)

Just to temper some of the excitement.

It's been no secret that we think the management genre is interesting, we've done a bunch of different cool games that have been inspired by the classics. Sims definitely was an inspiration for parts of Crusader Kings 2. But as always whenever we make a new game we try to do it our way - we're not going to release anything that directly competes with Sims any time soon - of course not. But we think it's a great game and has a bunch of really interesting mechanics.

Many of us are big fans of the series and have played all the games.

But be vocal - we're always listening - As for 2016 - we've got tons of fun games in the pipeline that I think a lot of management/sim game fans would potentially enjoy - in the meanwhile try Crusader Kings 2
So maybe in 2019 they'll do something :)

According to the Swedish television news from 29th of march Paradox had made 160 million sek (approx 18.5 mil $) on the two games 100 from skylines and 60 from Pillars But seems like they would keep earning money on Pillars since it was only just released by the 29th

I doubt Paradox is making lot of money out of PoE since they are more like distributor for PoE than traditional publisher. Most of the money should be going Obsidian in this case. However Paradox must still be happy in that they are getting "free" money in the case of PoE since they are not required to do much work.

I am having such a fun time with Wasteland 2 that I think the feats and graphic upgrade will be my second play thru. I am surprised I held out so long for WL2 because the original was one of my favorites of the 80's.
