Expeditions: Viking Announced - Sequel to Historical RPG Expeditions: Conquistador

Copenhagen, Denmark -- May 20th, 2015 -- Danish indie developer Logic Artists today announced they have begun development on the second installment in their historical RPG Expeditions series, Expeditions: Viking. Set in the late 700’s A.D., Expeditions: Viking is a tactical RPG where players inherit the leadership of their clan and are charged with elevating their clan’s status by adventuring in far away lands and defending their home from their enemies both foreign and domestic.

With the announcement, Logic Artists has also revealed some details about the game. Building from the original designs of their first game Expeditions: Conquistador the Logic Artists team have also taken player suggestions to heart. Announcing that the Expeditions Sequel will have an upgradable player village which they must return to between expeditionary raids to build and protect. Over-land travel and combat will now exist as part of the same layer. Transitioning from unrestricted exploratory movement to turn-based combat smoothly. Additionally players will see their player character manifested in the game world not just as a Role-playing character for conversations and decision making (As was in the first of the Expeditions Series), but also visibly represented in travel and combat as a custom character.

“We are very excited to return to our roots in the RPG genre, and as developers from the Nordic region, to make a game in a setting that is a lot closer to home than anything we've done before”, said Jonas Wæver, Creative Director for Logic Artists.“We're improving on the Conquistador formula with deeper and more dynamic systems for character progression, combat abilities, role-playing, choice and consequence, and expanding on our favorite part of Conquistador: camping and wilderness survival”.

Expeditions: Viking is a Historically-themed RPG set in the Viking Age. As the new leader of a humble clan of farmers and fighters players must adventure into the unknown lands to the west to raid and/or trade their way to wealth, fame and glory. Will you rewrite history as a peaceful and benevolent trader? Or pave your road to Valhalla with the treasures and bones of your fallen enemies? Experience choice and consequence as never before in the much awaited addition to the Expeditions Series, Expeditions: Viking.

We have some artwork of the game in our gallery.

Well here it is. The sequel is all about Vikings. Aries100 will go to the Nordic Game Convention for us next week and talk to Logic Artists about it.

muhabor May 20th, 2015 10:10

VIKINGS yes yes yes

Archangel May 20th, 2015 10:11

That trailer was well done. I enjoyed it. Vikings are a good choice with Vikings series hyping up that part of human history in the minds of potential players.

Is there going to be a KS for this?

Pladio May 20th, 2015 10:13

Yay ! :D

ikbenrichard May 20th, 2015 10:27

Great news . An instant buy for me.

Morrandir May 20th, 2015 10:31

Nice. :)

I hope this time the player character participates in combat.

aries100 May 20th, 2015 11:20

Yes, i will be going to the Nordic Game Conference this months. It is from 20-22th of May of this year. In more concrete terms, I will be going tomorrow. And meet up with the team from this game around 1:30 PM. If you have questions you'd like me to ask the developers, please feel free to ask them in this thread. And I'll ask them to the developers tomorrow.

As a Dane, I'm proud, of course, that we - finally - get an RPG which has Vikings in it.

DArtagnan May 20th, 2015 11:21

The first game was one of those rare games that I always wanted to check out, but I never actually played it. Well, in fact, I don't even remember if I played it.

Age or amount of games? :(

One day…..

wiretripped May 20th, 2015 11:26

Sounds good. Who doesn't like Vikings? :D

I am wondering the same thing.

You forgot the Banner Saga :-o

Questions :

1. How will combat be treated this time around ? Will there be more variety in troop types (it got a bit bland in the end, even though combat had tons of potential) ?

2. Will it be purely historical or will it have some mythological elements to it ? Light magic touches of the Vikings such as magical berserker axes or something ?

My question: Will the player character participate in combat?

Mine are subquestions for these:
1a. Will we get a variety of beasts to fight vs as well?
2a. Will Nordic Gods directly influence the gameplay in some ways?

Well it makes more sense in a Viking themed game. Viking leaders were not your Tywin Lannister commanding armies/troops from a hill or a tent.

Lemonhead May 20th, 2015 16:11

I'll definitely back this if it's a KS.

Carnifex May 20th, 2015 17:03

Rollo will reconquer in my game. I will certainly be getting this one!!

Kordanor May 20th, 2015 17:37

Really happy that it's vikings. Will instabuy/back this one for sure!

I didn't play it until well after release and was surprised how enjoyable the game was, and how little buzz it got compared to that goodness.

darklord May 20th, 2015 18:30

Looks great, I loved the first game. :)

Daniel.

HiddenX May 20th, 2015 18:48

I watched all 3 seasons of the TV-series Vikings - cool stuff.
In games the Viking setting is underused.

crpgnut May 20th, 2015 19:17

cool, am hyped, add flavor text

forgottenlor May 20th, 2015 21:00

A very intelligent choice in the economic sense. I hope this game will be really successful for them.

Feist May 21st, 2015 09:40

Super!

While there were many interesting possibilities this one was surely one of the most promising. Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that there'll be a linux version like there was for the first conquistador. (but not Clandestine… :'( )

JDR13 May 21st, 2015 10:08

It sounds interesting, but I don't understand why they're calling it a "sequel" to Expeditions: Conquistador. It doesn't sound like they're connected at all.

Myrthos May 21st, 2015 11:34

I think they do that because it is the game that comes after the other game in the Expeditions series.

mbuddha May 21st, 2015 13:37

Found the gameplay in the first one to be too tedious. Characters getting sick, and other random events nerfing my party and making the game a grind. Good tactical combat, just too difficult making progress in the overland map.

That was the part of the challenge. I guess not for everyone.

aries100 May 21st, 2015 19:24

I've met the team behind this game. You can Expect an interview article in the near future. As well as an answers to your questions and more….

Ralph put your head down and go to sleep. OH BOY that's when I'm a Viking. :)

No plans for a KS at the moment. Glad you enjoyed the trailer and happy to have your support!

Damian May 27th, 2015 12:54

I loved the first expeditions conquistador, however i hope they tone down the miss chance in combat.

Pladio May 27th, 2015 13:55

I thought the combat was very good. The main thing for me to improve would be to have more varied types of units and enemies.

What kinds of miss chances are we talking about here: melee, ranged, both?

I thought the ranged miss chance was a little too much. For example the starting round I once didnt hit anything. Tweak that and the combat would be impeccable.

Carnifex May 27th, 2015 16:14

I'm glad to see this has its own forums, totally deserving of such. As great as the first game was, I'm really looking forward to the Viking take on this.

Ah, yea we have been thinking about that a lot actually, basically in Conquistador there was a dramatic fall off rate after 6 or so hexes practically parabolic in nature for the hit %, we are gonna revamp that so that, among other things, it has a more gradual depreciation curve for Viking.

Damian May 28th, 2015 01:47

:) This makes me happy.
