The Witcher - Gone Gold!

No, really - this time it actually has:
Quote:

NEW YORK, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Atari, Inc. , one of the world's most recognized brands and a third-party video game publisher, announced today that The Witcher has gone gold and is scheduled to ship to retailers in North America on October 30. Developed by CD Projekt, The Witcher is a Games for Windows title and will be available exclusively for the PC.
The Witcher transcends traditional fantasy role-playing by throwing players into a unique fantasy world rife with modern social issues such as terrorism, political intrigue and racism where the lines between good and evil are blurred. Based on a fictional world created by best-selling Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, The Witcher casts players as Geralt, a legendary monster slayer and master swordfighter with supernatural abilities and reflexes.
"Not only does The Witcher shine with its stellar action gameplay, its thought provoking storyline riddled with mature social issues is sure to get gamers talking," said Larry Liberty, Senior Producer, Atari, Inc. "We're confident that The Witcher will prove to be one of the most acclaimed RPG titles this Fall."
"Creating The Witcher was a huge challenge, but also an adventure. Our task was to create a game with an incredibly involving story and a credible world -- a role-playing game that we ourselves would like to play," said Michal Kicinski, CD Projekt Joint CEO. "We approached this task with no compromises. Thanks to that The Witcher is not just another RPG. It's a piece of work that in many respects changes and extends the typical canon of such games. It's quite a brave approach, however I believe that thanks to that attitude The Witcher will bring much freshness into the genre and, of course, will give the players all around the world lots of joy and positive emotions. And we couldn't have asked for a better publishing partner than Atari. We're very happy that The Witcher will join Atari's stable of fantastic role-playing games."
The Witcher presents a fresh approach to traditional role-playing, blending an expansive, twisting plotline -- in which the impact of individual decisions can drastically alter the outcome of the game -- and fast-paced combat against a wide variety of foes. With highly detailed graphics, countless motion-capture animations and spectacular visual effects, The Witcher delivers brutal action, deep role-playing options and an intriguing story which will enthrall any player who dares to take on the formidable role of Geralt.

Bring it on!

Acleacius October 19th, 2007 05:36

Execellent, I have never ordered boobies from overseas and I can hardly wait, this is a very exciting time! :)

Oh and GRATZ, to CD PROJEKT! :)

magerette October 19th, 2007 05:37

Alright! Poland is partying tonight. ;)

(And it's pretty happy around my house, too.):party2::party:

Sir Markus October 19th, 2007 06:34

Great news! I've been looking forward to this game for a long time.

mudsling3 October 19th, 2007 06:43

I thought I already quit playing games, maybe after this one :)

JonNik October 19th, 2007 07:06

They cut it pretty close though with a release date on the 30th…

I choose the positive lookout on this: that they made sure they polished
the product to its best before releasing (not that there is still a host of
bugs and they finally run out of time i.e)…

Best wishes ofcourse, that all this time they invested, leaves both the Devs
and us pleased with the result (and that result is good enough to give birth
to many sequels in addition to sparking an increased publishing interest for
the books ;) )

Elwro October 19th, 2007 08:26

The voices in my mind are too loud. I'm finally preordering it today.

I'll never stop playing games I've already requested to be buried with my computer fully loaded with the best CRPG's. The problem is getting a decent power source to my coffin. J/K LOL.

Regarding the Witcher, I'm sure they wanted to get it out for Christmas. They want to make some money for their efforts and their release time couldn't be better. As long as the game is stable and reasonably bug free, they should sell a lot of copies, IMO.

Reyla October 19th, 2007 09:15

I hate to be a party crasher but this marketing blurb is inane:

Quote:

Traditional fantasy is all about terroism, racism, political intrigue and blurred lines. The inventor of Orcs, Elves and Halflings as we know them today himself wrote about this stuff.

Back to the party, I hope this lives up to the hype and builds some respect for PC RPGs.

Crolug October 19th, 2007 09:39

I've just played Hellgate London demo. Man, that game's cheap! Been there, done that. Is the game lame or I'm becoming too old for hack&slash? Bring on The Witcher!!!

zima98 October 19th, 2007 10:45

I hope it'll be reasonbly free of bugs, in that case everything should go fine.

sznurowadlo October 19th, 2007 11:01

CD projekt asked me on Monday to make a money transfer to cover the fee for Witcher.

Furthermore I know that will receive my preorder copy some time next week i.e. October 26th if I recall correctly. Only one week to go.

Rendelius October 19th, 2007 11:02

I am sceptical. Too many disappointments with games lately. I'll wait and see what the crowd has to say…

Thaurin October 19th, 2007 11:26

Yeah, there have been a lot of games lately that looked good on paper, but turned out to be disappointing. Not because of high expectations, but because the PR just didn't match the final product. We'll see…

Badesumofu October 19th, 2007 11:33

EB Australia is displaying the 7th of November as release date :S So I've ordered it from game.co.uk just like with MotB (which STILL isn't available in stores in Aus, not until the 24th). Game.co list the 26th as releas date for The Witcher, say that they dispatch games so that they arrive on the day of release, but the postage time to Aus is 4-6 days (MotB took 7 I think), so hopefully I'll get it sometime around the end of this month.

I suggest my fellow Australians who are looking forward to this game do the same.

MikeZZ October 19th, 2007 12:48

Finally. For those who doubt - read the previews at ign, gamespot and RPGWatch. It won't dissapoint U.

The reviews & users comments will show if the game is good. Despite of this I pre-ordered it.

I hope you're right.

Dez October 19th, 2007 13:39

Finally a game I'm sure to grab at the release day. :)

Dhruin October 19th, 2007 13:55

I think it's sensible for anyone with concerns to wait to see comments. I have it pre-ordered -- which says a lot because I've played it -- but then again, I haven't played the whole thing, so anything is possible. Don't take a preview as a final review.

I would say that if they simply released the July/August version I have, then it would be in as good a condition as many released games. I encountered a handful of crashes and some of the cutscenes and scripted encounters needed polish but it was perfectly playable and free of obvious major issues. The presentation and translation was already miles ahead of Two Worlds, for example. Assuming they have polished it further since then, it should be in pretty good shape.

titus October 19th, 2007 14:16

Dhruin do you know anything about the min specs?

Dhruin October 19th, 2007 14:24

We posted the specs a while back:

Minimum requirements:

Microsoft® Windows® XP Service Pack 2, Vista (Operating System must be up to date with the latest fixes)

Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz or AMD Athlon 64 +2800

1 GB RAM for Microsoft® Windows® XP / 1536 MB for Microsoft® Windows® Vista

128 MB Video RAM or greater with DirectX9 Vertex Shader/ Pixel Shader 2.0 support (NVIDIA GeForce 6600 or ATI Radeon 9800 or better)

8.5 GB available hard drive space

DirectX 9.0c compliant soundcard, plus speakers or headphones

DVD-Rom

Recommended requirements:

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2, Vista (Operating System must be up to date with the latest fixes)

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 GHz or AMD X2 5600+

2 GB RAM

NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX or ATI Radeon X1950 PRO

8.5 GB available hard drive space

DirectX 9.0c compliant soundcard, plus speakers or headphones

DVD-Rom

I have a modest P4 3.2, 6800GT and 2Gb and it ran quite well (1024x768, hi settings but low AA) at 25-30fps, except for the swamp, which was a real pain with mist and rain slowing things down.

Make some news of it.

Badesumofu October 19th, 2007 15:19

Sounds very positive… I'm definitley looking forward to this. Apart from 2 (arguably 3, but ToEE doesn't make my list) Troika Rough Gems, there hasn't been a great RPG this decade until just recently in MotB. Getting 2 within a month would be… amazing. If it has 2 or 3 months worth of polish over what a decent game has, it should be a dream to play.

Dhruin, my system is very similar to yours. I'm running a 3800+ Venice and 6800GS with 2 GB of RAM (DDR1 though, obviously). Good to hear it mostly runns nicely.

:) You can feel free to take this with a grain of salt (damnit, I hate that term) but I'd talked to Atari's producer on the game yesterday and he mentioned that, in his opinion, it actually ends better than it begins… that's pretty awesome to me; I've had enough games lately in which the ending just didn't live up to the rest of the game.

leth October 19th, 2007 16:01

@Dhurin: Besides the nipples, do you know if there are any difference in story or dialog between the US and the UK version of the game? I don't care for the visual differences, but stories and/or dialog changes I DO mind.

thanks.

Jabberwocky October 19th, 2007 16:05

'…said Larry Liberty, Senior Producer, Atari, Inc. "We're confident that The Witcher will prove to be one of the most acclaimed RPG titles this Fall.'"

Uh, setting the bar a bit low aren't we Larry? I mean, it's a pretty safe assumption considering the very limited genre and the fact that you are limiting it further to a single season.

If I were a PR for a game that I really believed in, I would be spouting "possible game of the year" at the very least!

Dez October 19th, 2007 16:26

Jabberwocky I get the feeling that you are overanalysing his words a bit now. Most of those press releases are just bs anyway.. I belive my own eyes and those dozens reports all over the gaming sites. Judging by the videos witcher feels and looks like a game for my taste. I'm going to buy the game at the relase day just to show my support (and ofcourse because I can't wait to play it! :D)

Badesumofu October 19th, 2007 16:45

That's good to hear Tom. Between Bioshock and MotB, I've become frustrated with games that start out amazing, but decay and fail to fulfill my expectations at the end. The last 2 level s of Bioshock were just.. not up to par, and the last act of MotB was quite dissapointing. If The Witcher can deliver an ending that lives up to, or even blows away the beggining and middle, it'll likely be my GOTY.

Crolug October 19th, 2007 17:01

Yes, gimmie The Witcher asap cause I don't have anything worthy to play atm. So I play through n-th time Fallout 2 and Vampire Bloodlines… :)

Squeek October 19th, 2007 18:17

The Witcher may set the bar a lot higher for single-player CRPG with real-time combat. I wonder how the folks at Bethesda and Piranha Bytes feel about it. The competition is looking good!

Dyne October 19th, 2007 19:31

Finally. It's been a long time coming. Is this still on for the 26th in the UK/EU?

MikeZZ October 19th, 2007 19:54

Yeap. 26th - Europe, 30th USA, Australia at the beginning of November - I don't know exactly.

I am clean since July, my spare time and money just found a worthwhile cause. But the Witcher might fill up the void left from my expectation of G3. Anyone know where can I get a CE of the game ship to the US?

NFLed October 20th, 2007 03:08

I'm going to wait until reading the reviews and comments. The Witcher looks good from what I've seen but there's always a chance that things may not be implemented well or some earth-shattering annoyances come up such as infinite and frequent monster respawning or whatever. I won't wait long, though, if the initial review scores from sites I enjoy are good I'll get it.

Yes, I agree I totally overanalysed his statement, but it was in the name of irony, not finding fault with the game. I was trying to say that I have doubts about the words chosen by the representative.

I'm totally stoked about this game. I've said in other threads more than once that this looks like the game I will finally enjoy as much as Gothic!
