Killing Slag isn't hard.

Killing him AND saving Jake Finch is another story. :)

Yah. I have saved Jake and talked to his father about his story.

I saved him with the help of a glitch.

I kept running out of the room as soon as they turned hostile, and everyone would follow me outside where Jake would still end up getting killed. Then I had one reload where Slag and his henchmen inexplicably went back inside but Jake stayed outside, and I was eventually able to kill everyone without losing Jake.

Fun battle, but it was a real bitch.

I've already mentioned that one:

Note that it can't protect you against specific bosses, for example the one where a kid brought some sword to a boss and you're sent to rescue the sword and if possible the kid too. But in such cases either return to the scene later when you're beefed up, or jump into power armor (any will do).

To save both settler and kid, the "trick" is to enter with power armor and take the tank role. You don't have to go melee, some high damage shotgun will suffice (I used wounding shotgun), just make sure you're taking all the fire.

Once the chatty is over and you persuade the kid not to kill the settler, shoot immediately so all 4 mobs go aggro on you. I had the minuteman sidekick with me there dunno if that helped anyhow.

I play on normal. JDR plays on superhard so that's probably the reason the kid is not easy to save in his game.

Also to note, the settler you save (if) is bugged.
He says he's going away, but if you return there in a month, a year or any time, he'll still be there repeating that he's going away - but never does. And for whatever reason you can't recruit him to your settlements.
