Hey all.

So, I picked this game up on Android. Apparently, it's the same as the Steam version (I think).

Played it for a few hours thus far. Really cool game. The graphics are beautiful and old-school and the music and sound are excellent. Really enjoying playing it.

Only thing, the combat system is a bit strange to say the least. To attack enemies, you run into them! Only don't hit them head to head or you will take damage. Instead, you need to attack from angles and move around them. Pretty fun actually but definitely different than any RPG I've ever played, pretty much.

So yeah, anyone here played the game before? I paid $4.99 on Google Play Store and it was well worth it.

I'm playing the Ys Chronicles II at the moment. The first YS was great and difficult, it took me an hour to kill the final boss. Second part is also pretty good. You should definitely play it after you finish the first one.

It didn't take me an hour but it take me some tries to kill the first boss in the game, hah. I think the unique combat system really makes for some interesting combat scenarios and situations.

What I like the most in Ys, it's the boss fights mechanics. No potion, no switching weapons, just your reaction and skill. And awesome music. I especially like the music theme in YS I, when you fighting in the tower. This music is just making you fight through your enemies:)

I respect your dexterity :thumbsup: for being able to play this game on a touchscreen. I mean, on keyboard or gamepad it would be "difficult, but doable" but on a touchscreen I would probably quit on the first boss of I.

As for the game itself, yes it is very good action-RPG, the bump combat system is simplistic, but very good and satisfying and has a nice sound effect when you hit the enemy. Too bad they dropped it on later games, which I still enjoyed but really miss the bump system of I & II.

That makes the exploration of the mine memorable.

Dam there's currently a humble sale with the full pc stuff and humble includes a free DRM version so I'll probably be able play them on Mac with a wrapper.

But "reaction and skills" will certainly disqualify me, I never played much with a gamepad and never been comfortable with them, and keyboard with too many keys and chains of keys hit always been out of my reach.

Perhaps get them to play them at lowest difficulty, but then will probably lost too much of its spice if I cannot enjoy the combats. But probably wiser is just ignore the sale. :-)

I have yet to play an Ys game I didn't like, but *nods to Fluent* I really enjoyed Ys I + II for the reason you said, Fluent…it feels really old school and nostalgic, somehow. I've played a couple hours into Ys I, and it's really really hard, but…it really took me back. It helps that I played it in the golden sunlight of late afternoon way out in the country, too. Call me silly, but…I dunno. It really amped the nostalgia.

Great music and the whole series is brimming with early 90's RPG vibes. They're good games.

And Fluent, Ys Celceta is also excellent (a bigger RPG than any other Ys), if you ever get a Vita. But if you get a Vita and don't play Persona 4 Golden first, imma drive up there and play the worst country music I can find right outside your window. I know where you live! ;)

I played 3 Ys games using keyboard, and only one(Ys origins) using controller. Origins and Ys III have similar mechanics, and gamepad is better choice in this game, but not necessary. But Ys Chronicles I+II has completely different mechanics and you can easily finish it on keyboard. Well, not easily to be honest, but only because of boss fights.

I already hear enough country music coming from the room next door (my dad's Winamp playlist). I've heard enough songs about drinking beer in pick-up trucks down by the river at the honky tonk to last me a lifetime, thank you. :)

Thanks for answers, I progressed a little, the gamepad could be a requirement but eventually not for 1&2.

I still wonder if their action won't be too much for me. I read multiple comments and saw too many clues it could be a problem. I'm tempted try 1&2 (it's a pack) and Origin and take my chance with a high probability of a fail.

EDIT: Ok the plan, choose between Origin and Oath, first seems logical but second could the best. Try play it some hours and then decide.

EDIT2: Ok thanks all, I should have checked a bit some let's play first. It looks like Origin and Oath are more in a pure Hack&Slash category, I could enjoy but what I seen is for me too maze like and too repetitive dungeons, moreover the gamepad controls are certainly too much for me.

Eventually I won't adapt to bump gameplay of Ys 1&2 but if I have one to try in my current mood it's this one.

My only Ys game I attempted to play seriously was one of the the remakes for PC with nicer graphics. I found it very fun in a jRPG sort of way…until I encountered some vampire lord boss mid-way through, that would turn into a swarm of bats every time I hit him and did damage, then reintegrate back into his humanoid form to deal 10X more damage to me. I was able to calculate from his damage status bar that it would take me about 3 hours (real-world hours, not game time) to defeat him, so I just said, "fuck it" and ragequit. There must have been a trick or something to defeating him in a reasonable time. Intriguing series though.
