The Division - early reports

This from PC World - doesn't sound too marvelous.

As for the game itself, I’m slowly working my way through missions. So far I’ve done quite a few hours of “Clearing floors in generic office buildings” and “Shooting people wearing bulletproof hoodies” and “Watching dogs poop on the street.” The guns feel as spongy as ever, with headshot after headshot barely making a dent in enemies a few levels higher than you—a choice I still think clashes with the ultra-real aesthetic Ubisoft’s touted since the first E3 reveal. I wasted 400-plus rounds of assault rifle ammo on one sniper boss.

It’s a weird game at first blush. We’ll have more for you once I feel I’ve covered enough ground for a proper review. My first impressions aren’t super positive, but maybe it’ll turn around on me later. The important part is: It’s not a technical disaster, aside from the requisite server hiccups.
Of course, Joxer, it is also a Ubisoft console port. Please proceed.

EDIT: I put this in the wrong subforum, really.

Steam reviews are pretty negative. A lot of the criticisms I see also have nothing to do with bugs or technical issues (or having to be always online), but criticisms that the quests are generic and boring and that there are far two few types of opponents.

I played the beta then got a refund. My biggest complaints were enemies being bullet sponges, if I unload a clip in to a guys head then hit him with a sticky grenade he shouldn't still have a quarter of his health left.

Second was pvp area. The only way to leave the area is to go to an evacuation site and call a helicopter. So what ends up happening is everyone camps the evac site then kills the people trying to leave and takes their loot.

When I first entered the pvp area everyone was just sanding around, no one was fighting and I thought what the heck is going on. Then here comes a helicopter and everyone open fire on the people trying to get to it. I knew at that point I wanted no part of the pvp game.

If they fix those 2 things I might pick it up in a sale otherwise forget it.

On the plus side it's very pretty if you have the hardware to max it out.

ESO sewers entrance and exit has (or had) a similar issue. Too many PvP gankers for my tastes.

I can't be doing with that. That sort of bullet-sponging is pretty fatal to my enjoyment of a shooty game. Headshots should be headshots. Sounds like a very clumsy way of implementing MMO RPG mechanics.

Their won't be a lot of gankers in The Division though, the entire map instance has a max capacity of 24 players.

Thrasher March 9th, 2016 00:11

May help. but all it takes is one ganker to ruin your looting. :)

It's not actually, PC version was made separately, it wasn't taken code from consoles then "adapted".
But okay, we can still call it port and here's the "port" analysis:
http://www.pcgamesn.com/the-division…pc-port-review

- I'm not interested into MMOs at all and that includes this one.
- Skyrim fans will be happy as they can roleplay troll Lydia here.
- This MMO contains scamware with the price of 40 bucks: http://store.steampowered.com/app/437700/

Basically it's a huge nobuy from me, even if it turns out in a masterpiece of a decade. Which it is not. If it was, they'd know it'll sell like a cure and there would be no need for any scam.

Find the errors.

This is the tragedy of Ubisoft. Their modelling of cities is phenomenal, they just don't waste too much energy on the "game" part.

lackblogger March 10th, 2016 00:49

This should be in General RPG.

Ripper March 10th, 2016 00:52

Thank god you got here when you did, Lackblogger. :p

To be fair it is a game. I assume you were using a sidearm for this because unloading a clip into an enemy in this game usually means death for them unless of course they are bosses. But if you throw the grenade too the should really be dead. Were you equipping the new armor you found? Because they can increase offensive power. I dont think you would have foudn a better weapon by the time you quit.

As for pvp those guys will be marked as "rogue" for the rest of the game. Its gonna bite them in the ass later on.

lackblogger March 10th, 2016 01:21

Actually I was mistaken, this should be in General Non-RPG.

joxer March 10th, 2016 02:22

You're all wrong.
This belongs to MMO section.

All Ubisoft games except the ones from Michel Ancel are the same: solid, but generic, repetitive and incredibly boring.

They were the first to embrace the culture of hundred men studios, especially with their huge Montreal office, and it shows on development.

The Guillemot brothers are laser focused with appealing to American tastes and to only target already popular genres. This is even more pathetic with Gameloft, which is a company from another Guillemot brother, which actually makes nothing but direct copies from other successful games with just enough alterations that they don't get sued.

But at least they throw some of their designers a bone every now and them and allow them to do experimental projects. However it's obvious they really don't care about them.

redman5427 March 10th, 2016 03:33

I'm hearing pc version multiplayer stuff is all stored on the client which means hacking. I dont like playing with cheaters.

Thrasher March 10th, 2016 03:35

Me neither. That would be a deal breaker for me.

BoboTheMighty March 10th, 2016 04:26

I'm not sure how they managed to mess up here. Blacklist ( favorite action stealth ) had pretty believable "tank" soldiers, full body armor, with even regular enemies wearing vests and helmets that could be "shot off".
Hell, it's multiplayer was ten times better from what I'm seeing here. One time that Ubisoft "failed" to reiterate the same game play mechanics from a previous game and it was a mistake for not doing it. What a weird company.

azarhal March 10th, 2016 05:04

Oh Ubi…always late to the boat and so full of itself.
