A new SNES RPG: Romancing SaGa 2
Well, holy crap.
Back at the end of the nineties, when I had burned through the JRPG catalog then available in the west and was weeping because there were no more slimes to conquer, I used to follow a fan translation project for Romancing SaGa 2, at first eagerly and then with increasing resignation as updates became fewer and fewer.
As far as I know, that translation was never finished. But now SqEnix has done their own version for phones. Over at Kotaku, Jason Schreier writes:
Quote:
Even if you’re not familiar with Square’s off-beat SaGa series, you’ve probably heard the name. It’s best described as “alt-JRPG,” a series of games that reject conventional design choices in favor of complex mechanics and weird systems. Most of them eschew traditional leveling in favor of stats and skills that improve based on combat

If I remember right, this entry in the series was also multi-generational like Dragon Quest V and Phantasy Star II -- your characters have kids who inherit their abilities and take over as protagonists.
No release date yet, but there's a trailer. Who knows if it'll hold up, but I'm willing to shell out $14.99 for nostalgia's sake.
