God Eater

So what are these God Eater games? The reviews are pretty positive on Steam but I'm not at all sure what the game is even about.

Those games give a false message to a hopeless end

The game is a grinder.

I went ahead and got the thing to try and figure out what it really is about. The reviews kept going on about it being a Monster Hunter game but, having been mostly a PC gamer, I've never played Monster Hunter so that didn't help me at all.

The game is pretty simple: mission, story, repeat. You talk to the cute, little girl behind the counter and she gives you a choice of missions. You pick one out, select some AI team members (up to 3), then head into a small area that has a few monsters in it. Kill the monsters and the mission ends. Then, if you picked a 'story' mission, the story advances - otherwise you're just plopped back into your HQ.

The battles are OK so far. The combat is fairly complex - using different elements and hitting different areas does different damage. You get a huge assortment of weapons to craft but you can only bring in one ranged and one melee weapon plus a shield. You don't seem to really advance your character but all the crafting and upgrading of weapons acts very much like character advancement so I think I'll be happy on that front.

No opinion on the story yet - it's still introducing all the characters to me. It's very anime - complete with the biggest weapons I've seen wielded in a video game. Here's a knife.

It sounds kind of like Monster hunter. The Monster hunter games are basically about kililng really big monsters in epic boss battles, then using the monster parts to craft better weapons and armor so you can kill even bigger monsters. The story missions just unlock new areas with even bigger monsters in them and better resources to collect. The story is pretty much irrelevent. Your character never levels up but your gear does. And the game is complex a lot that people often talk about your skill at the game leveling up even if yor character never does.

Thank you for your impressions, Zloth. I was curious about this one too.

The most important question to me is, is the combat twitchy?
