Bevontule - Try the Demo

Game Jolt suggests that you check out the the demo for the upcoming turn based RPG Bevontule:

Quote:

Drawing inspiration from a wide variety of different types of role-playing games, Bevontule is an upcoming computer RPG with a large emphasis on plot, lore and character development, as well as combat, customization and progression.

Featuring a deep, challenging and innovative turn-based tactical combat system, Bevontule's primary emphasis is on the many ways in which characters can master the nuances of their available skills and equipment setups to best dispatch the varied and highly intelligent enemies they will encounter.

At the same time, progression is driven by a very tightly-written and mythology-deep storyline that has been decades in the making and is codified in many short stories, maps, sketches and even its own wiki. Not only is the main storyline arc of the game solidified, but so too is the extensive history and setting in which the game occurs.

This looks interesting. Let's see…

Turn Based - Check
Exploration - Check
So-So graphics - Doesn't matter

And as a bonus, the devs are from Columbus Ohio.

Apparently you have to pay for the demo… I am unable to download it without payment information. Am I missing something or the devs are gone mad?

There's no need to pay anything. Just click on the "No thanks, take to me to the download." below the donation form.

Hi guys, one of the devs here! I just wanted to point out that the demo linked to by the youtube video is actually three months old and that the current one on GameJolt is superior to the one shown in the video in about every conceivable way :)

Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them!

Did anyone here try the demo out? Is the game any good ?

Video makes it look pretty decent.

When I looked at it there was nothing to do but fight. No trading, crafting, very little dialog, extremely bare-bones exploration, etc. It looked like a mildly ugly combat game with circles. The combat was pretty good though; but that's the least important aspect of a crpg for me. The devs seemed pretty cool and were active on the Codex. If exploration, loot, lore and stats eventually catch up to combat, it might be worth a looksee.

To me, a combat demo is like going to a dinner and the host tries to entice you by showing you a plate. :D

Well, at least they let you into their home.

The game looks intriguing. If the rest of the gameplay can catch up to the combat, could be good.

This is my thought as well. Bevontule doesn't have the graphics to be just a combat game. You have to look like Dark Souls to pull that off. Therefore, they really need to nail something else: exploration, loot acquisition, c&c, dialog, trading, crafting, etc.
They haven't shown anything like that yet.

Does it include ranged attacks, such as bow weapons?

It didn't when I played it. You basically had tank, dps, healer. This was fine for pre-alpha but 3 months have passed, so hopefully they have done something in that amount of time.

Several characters and enemies do have ranged skills and did in the previous demo as well. As of now, however, there are still only three playable characters and neither of them are dedicated ranged attackers, so to speak, and all of their basic attacks (IE not skills) are melee range. There will definitely be an archer character added in a future update, however.

We've spent most of the past few months revamping all of the graphics of Bevontule (and a million other things as well). Have a look at this updated video (by the same youtuber as the original link) if you'd like to see the improvements made in this regard.

crpgnut November 29th, 2016 18:48

I played back in July, so 4 months ago. The game has improved graphically. If anyone decides to try the new demo, please post your thoughts; especially about non-combat things.
