A From software gem that you probably never heard of, Lost Kingdoms 2
This game got harsh reviews on metacritic from mainstream reviewer but it really is an excellent game.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/gamec…st-kingdoms-ii Normally i get put off by having to play a female character in a game but not this one because the game is so good that it transcended those normal barriers for me. I played the original too but it isnt as good as this one. The game successfully melds card games like Magic the Gathering and RPG's. Unlike the first one that had random battle all the enemies were on the same screen as you fight them aswell as going from place to place. Its also a "realtime" game There are cards you attack with, cards that morphs you, cards that you summon and instant cards. On top of that you can combine up to 4 cards to do a combination. Cards and the character level up as you go through the game. Card then morph into stronger ones once you get a high enough level with them i believe(its been a while since i played this). It also has 2 endings i think. The main downside is that it isnt very long, about 10 hours to beat. Hopefully well see this gem on the steam store or on the Nintendo switch virtual console, fingers crossed. |

If giving the choice do you pick a male or female character? I don't support Trump but given the choice I play a male character always. Please add me to your ignore list as well if I am not already on it. |

I think one of the reasons why the female gamer population dwindled in the SNES to PS2 eras was the the fact that there were very little amount of games with female leads, because females couldnt relate to the characters. In the NES era, characters were just a block of pixels so it didnt matter too much. But if that makes me a bad person so be it, I guess. |

If all it takes to get added to your ignore list is not wanting to play a female character in a game … then guess you need to add me to it as well. |

I think also i would play a non pretty female lead aswell. I think the reverse is true for women, they dont like playing ugly women and even less ugly men. For example less than 10% of dark souls players are female in any age bracket of reddit users. https://i.imgur.com/PCsfr1M.jpg While no definitive because it is just from reddit users, it still a difference of a factor of more than 3 at the time this survey was done(though reddit claims split of 53M/47F i dont believe that). I think the best bet for a game is to have a "pretty boy" as the lead in the west(i have no idea about the east and i am not going to try at this point). Which is why the Final Fantasy franchise has been so successful among women and for the most part men too: FF6: Female Lead FF7: pretty boy FF8: pretty boy FF9: cute rat male lead FFX: pretty boy FFX2: All female party FF11: MMO FF12: pretty boy FF13: Female lead FF13-2: pretty boy FF13LR: Female lead FF14: MMO FF15: pretty boys Would be interesting to see among other RPGs. |
Don't feel bad guys. I've been on Elel's ignore list ever since I said one of the female characters on Game of Thrones was hot or something like that. Not sure what her issue is…
Regarding From Software, they actually have quite a few gems from back in the PS1-PS2 days. The King's Field series, Shadow Tower, and Eternal Ring were all pretty good imo. King's Field 1&2 were especially great for their time. They were the first true 3D open-world RPGs I played. |

I can play male or female no problem whatsoever, but I do draw a line on mascot-type characters. I try to imagine some semblance of belieavability but Japanese fixation with adding mascot/talking animals as party members irks me to no end (and I do love JRPGs).

I was going to write a sarcastic 'you sexist pig' comment, but elel ruined it for me :( I just like how this thread quickly turned into a discussion that hqs nothing to do with the original post…

While I don't have anything against consoles (I have a PS3), I just hate the concept of games or gems from From Software being tied to specific hardware and gets lost in time - very sad. (I can't find them on UK playstation store).

I am hoping the game gets on on the Nintendo switch on virtual console and is successful enough so that From gets the idea to release it on steam, possibly even make a sequel. |

The newest one is Hand of Fate, it has very positive reviews. Another excellent one is Etherlords 1&2, while technically a strategy game is has cards and RPG elements, combat is like playing a magic the gathering battle pretty much.
