Torment:ToN - Review Roundup

Here is a first batch of reviews for Torment: Tides of Numenera.
And with no score:

More information.

Maylander February 28th, 2017 14:09

Sounds like it's ticking all the right boxes. Good news!

joxer February 28th, 2017 14:15

Right boxes as PC boxes? ;)
On X boxes, erm, PS boxes, not all were thrilled. I guess either the game doesn't contain tons of grindy filler ot just ain't dumb enough for them.

GuybrushWilco February 28th, 2017 14:43

Looks like mostly good to great reviews with a couple of average reviews. This bodes well :)

Nephologist February 28th, 2017 14:43

Any Watchers playing this? I'd trust impressions from regular RPG fans over professional gaming journos any day.

It has technical issues on consoles.

I cannot accept that as a reason because from:

Definitely a niche game, Torment: Tides of Numenera is under no circumstances easy to recommend to an impatient low/med level gamer or anyone that tires easily when confronted with large amounts of text.
Me? I already see a potential reason to adore the game!

booboo February 28th, 2017 15:14

Played about 30 minutes - definitely a lot more polished than when I tried awhile ago. I'm now paying a lot more attention to everything - and enjoying it so far (I did get quite far before, but I was really just messing about). I think this will be a good experience.

sakichop February 28th, 2017 15:16

Reading several reviews it seems to be what I expected. A ton of reading and poor to no combat. Not saying that's bad but it's not my kind of game.

Interestingly I see 20-30 hours play time mentioned across the reviews. I wonder if I'll see the same too short not playing comments I've seen about other games here or if nostalgia will make it a nonissue.

Elwro February 28th, 2017 15:26

As big a fan of PC gaming as I am, I would like to play this one on my PS4… because then I could play it together with my wife, in the living room. Are the technical issues really severe?

-----------------
A quote from that DSOGaming review: "Maybe we should count our blessings and be happy that inXile has at least stayed true to the basics of Planescape: Torment, as most fundamentals remain thankfully unchanged. One has only to visit recent chapters in similarly classic RPG families like Dungeon Siege, Fallout and Sacred to be reminded that things can go really bad when trying to keep up with modern trends in an effort to appeal to a broader target group. " Interesting. Thought review sites adored the new Fallout.

From DSO review:

Quote:

Despite all of the good work done with the game’s characters, lore, gameplay and artwork, it is also a game that’s mired in technical issues on PS4 and in our brief testing on Xbox One. When interacting with an object, the character may walk around randomly a little before actually focusing on it. There are constant frame rate drops and stutters which become increasingly jarring as you play.

Torment’s problems really come to a head during battles, with the game crashing four times at crucial moments during my play through. Twice the game just failed to load the next action, with one not loading up the UI after completing a quest as well as freezing my character in place, and the second in a battle where pressing “End Turn” resulted in nothing happening. Besides these significant problems the game is also beset by numerous other small and deeply annoying bugs, which when taken as a whole serve to destroy all of the hard work that’s been put in elsewhere.

Played the first our, I'm liking the writing style so far. It's understated and tamed but it takes itself serious enough that it's engaging. I'm getting a good vibe from the game :)

Jesus &*%$! Christ, WHY?!

Haven't these devs collectively been working on combat systems for a thousand effing years? What is so hard to get?

Aerth February 28th, 2017 16:10

I am a backer since 2013. I waited that one. I did not play any alpha or beta to not spoil myself. My impressions after few hours of play on PC and 4 years of waiting? I am a happy guy :)

Morrandir February 28th, 2017 16:12

I just fired it up for 30 minutes on my work potato. I just clicked through the intro to browser character building options and see the first actual crisis (apart from the one in the intro).
I'm quite sure I'll play it. However I a bit worried if I can handle the text when playing inbthe evening when I'm tired…

What he means is than fights are quite rare. There is no random trash mobs or guys jumping on you because they suspect than your 'hello' could be confused with an accusation on the morale standing of their mothers.
Without mentioning you can try to avoid them. They are called 'Crisis' and they certainly are.

domein February 28th, 2017 17:56

It is like Tyrany, but with less combat

joxer February 28th, 2017 18:14

How would you describe it for us who still didn't buy Tyranny - because it's supposed to be a very short game?
That you can finish Torment2 in one afternoon… with less combat?

Kordanor February 28th, 2017 18:20

I didn't read the reviews as I didn't want to spoil myself in anyways. But as I am still within Fallout 4 and this game will still take another 50 hours or so I was wondering how long Torment actually is.
So if it's just 50h I'd just focus on torment for a while and then continue with Fallout 4. And if it's longer I'd proably play both game in parallel.

NFLed February 28th, 2017 18:25

Before I purchase this I am interested in seeing comments not only about the game overall but about its length.

If it is only 20-40 hours to complete including side quests, then either that does not include reading the apparently huge amount of text, the game is super-short other than reading the text, or reviewers are super-speedy readers (or skip reading much of it most likely).

luj1 February 28th, 2017 18:28

As predicted, watch this blow Pillars and Tranny clear out of the water. Even though I won't play it before the DC hits the shelves (which could mean up to two years).

I find that hard to believe. Why put that SJW simulator in the same sentence as this?

It have same horrible writing as Tyranny?

bizorker February 28th, 2017 18:56

Based on some of the recent "best of" lists I read in the new year, I started playing Age of Decadence, and I am really loving it. Definitely a missed gem for me, which I'm glad I found. Some of the comments here remind me of Age of Decadence - lots of text, not all about combat, etc. Perhaps Torment is like Age of Decadence but with more polish? If so I'm sure I will love it.

It is way less hardcore than AoD from what I read.

Arkadia7 February 28th, 2017 19:21

I played it for a short time this morning, made a character, and got to the first area screen. My very early impressions are that it has a good interface and atmosphere, and is intriguing. I like the ambience in the game, the science fiction combined with fantasy feeling is very well realized. The interface shows a lot of polish, is well designed, and everything seems clearly labeled and user friendly, with good "information boxes" explaining things to the player. That is very important in a game like this, and it looks like they got the interface right. It also looks very pretty, and has eye pleasing little details and effects.

Regarding game play, it seems to be a "reader" for sure, where there is a lot of text. But in my brief time playing, the writing seems good, and that makes the reading much more bearable. Hopefully the writing will remain at a high level for the whole game. (note, I'm not saying it is Lord of the Rings , lol, just that for computer game writing, it is better than usual)

One thing that is a slight irritation that I noticed, the very first companions/party members have the annoying cliche where they are always arguing…to me, I don't like or want two party members who argue with each other constantly, that is a tiring shtick (its meant to be humorous in the game, I think) Of course that can be fixed by dropping one of them and replacing them with another party member further on in the game.

Overall, I would say my very early impressions are highly favorable, and I'm looking forward to exploring the game!

It is that length (30 hours) to cover everything. Content is frontloaded, story collapses around the middle.

Kordanor February 28th, 2017 21:19

Only played the very first stuff yet (just got my first companions).

For my taste the story is too crazy and abstract. Also the amount of text is…well, insane.
As I am reading out everythig for my videos I basically do nothing but reading and my throat already feels sore after just 2 hours of gameplay aka reading.

That said, I am playing in German. While the translation itself is ok, the amount of errors is very high. Missing letters, missing words, some wrong grammar, some extra words.
I didn't count, but I'd guess that in the 2 hours I played I encountered maybe 15 to 30 errors.

Edit: Played another hour. Maybe another 5 typos (German). But also every interaction is quite fun as you have multiple options.

Thrasher February 28th, 2017 22:30

I like the sound of this from PCGamer: "this is science fantasy done in the psychedelic pastel shades of a 70s paperback."

Carnifex February 28th, 2017 22:36

Got my key this morning and I'll be checking this one out after I finish Shadow of Adam.

Asdraguuhl February 28th, 2017 23:51

Despite my rather large backlog, I haven't been playing too much lately but I was very much awaiting the release of this game and I really want to play this one. I have deliberately not been following its development in order to avoid any spoilers and to maximise my experience. I even want to avoid reading reviews. So I have little idea of what to expect but as long as "weird" and "crazy" stuff is thrown at me I'll be more than happy :).

I have just started downloading it from GOG but I am not sure whether I should stick to my own rule of not playing any game before it is sufficiently patched.

Does anyone know from reviews or from the beta testing phase to what extent it is buggy and whether it is in a playable state?

Thrasher February 28th, 2017 23:58

Well with the Amazon cloud outages this AM, my download was fraught with delays, on Steam, but it's installed and working now. And yes, if the bugs are bad maybe I will wait for at least the first patch. How is it going?

I have played 6 hours without any issue. I am on PC however.

Ok, thanks. Just in case, I think I'll wait a few days and if I see no general complaints then I'll take the plunge :).

wolfgrimdark March 1st, 2017 01:06

Busy downloading it now :)

Archangel March 1st, 2017 01:20

I had it freeze in my first tutorial crisis but it worked well after that.

Couchpotato March 1st, 2017 01:21

Been playing the game for a few hours. As of right now I find the game to be very text heavy with little combat. For now I've taken a short break to play more later.

One thing I do like is the tide mechanic, and how stat points are used in/out of combat.

GuybrushWilco March 1st, 2017 02:21

The complaints I am seeing so far: buggy on consoles, lots and lots of text, and little combat. It has always been advertised as a text heavy and combat light/optional game, so I'm not sure why anyone would expect anything else. This definitely sounds like a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment, which is my favorite RPG of all time :)

Well I as just stating my experience with the game.:)

As I knew what to expect but it's definitely a game you won't be playing for more then a few hours. I'm not kidding as my eyes are sore right now due to excessive text reading.

Zloth March 1st, 2017 02:54

Hmmm, only $45 so a shorter playing time isn't such a big deal. If this were a $60 game for 30 hours… ouch.
