MUD / MUSH / Text Based MMORPGs ?
MUD (Multi User Dungeon) used to be the name for MMO until Richard Garriott decided to call it something else. Now it's mostly used to describe an MMORPG that's mainly all text based.
Does anyone here play them? (Or used to?). I used to play some back in the early 90s and would love to get deep into one (or a few) again. Looking for recommendations. I would rather get opinions from people here, rather than those silly reddit users. I also can't seem to find any good text-based single player RPGs (which is why I wrote my own out of desperation, in my sig), which don't fall into the Roguelike category, or the IF category so Nethack and Zork do not count, more like something in-between. Anyone know of any? They're usually REALLY obscure if you can even find one. The closest I could find was: https://archive.org/details/TheForbi…ofFalchon_1020 Which is actually a MUD converted to single player. |
I spent a lot of time playing Legend of the Red Dragon.
Later in life hosted BBS that other people couldbplay but essentially stopped playing it myself early 90s. |

LotRD looks interesting. Close to what i'm looking for, but not enough exploration freedom (much prefer the n,s,e,w,u,d way of movement), and not a fan of the menu /choose your adventure method. It seems quite similar though to: http://www.sryth.com |
You could probably still find some Majormud boards going. I got so hooked on that game! Should be some dedicated fans around.
Seems like the same talk of the games death we've had since the 90s, but I think reddit is a decent place to look. https://www.reddit.com/r/MajorMUD/ It has good clients to help you manage or automate things, can play multiple characters fairly easily. I've been looking for something better than it forever. :) |
There was a Lord2 that had nesw I think

http://www.alteraeon.com/ I'm still trying it out, but it's been the easiest to get up and play so far. I'm gravitating to a MUD called New Moon, which has some of the best writing i've seen in years. Very unique. http://eclipse.cs.pdx.edu/ The problem with all these types of games, is the the amount of time you need to invest just being introduced into the game before you know you even like it (flashbacks of old school Eve Online). So while there's popular ones like Aardwolf, Forgotten Kingdoms, DSLmud, coffeemud, etc, it's such a huge time investment, just to test it. |
