Southern California Fires

Some amazing photos and videos from the fires that started last week (and are still going in some cases). Care of the LA Times.

I hope you're not too close to any of those.

Thrasher December 12th, 2017 07:54

Thanks. The closest is the Skirball fire, but it's 10 miles away and seems to be contained pretty much.

We have to hope that the winds don't return.

Nice pictures. Terrible situation.

The US certainly has it's share of natural catastrophies.

pibbur who hopes the thrasher stays safe.

Oh man, that's too close for comfort. I really hope this ends very soon.

Trump would seem to fit this description as well :)

I'm in Santa Barbara (roughly 10 miles away from the Thomas Fire, as of now), and the air quality here is absolutely terrible. Waking up to the smell of smoke every morning is quite debilitating (thankfully I have an air purifier running where I sleep, but the rest of the house is fumigated). The amount of ash falling is incredible.

I know a fair number of people who have been personally impacted by the fire, losing their homes and such. It's so sad.

Stay safe out there.

Thrasher December 12th, 2017 19:40

Very sad. Keep safe and on your toes.

Alrik Fassbauer December 12th, 2017 21:30

Be careful.

I had friends who house burned down in the Santa Barba fire (er the one around 2009 - not sure if it burned down again this time around). Also friends were pretty close to the San Diego fire couple of years ago. These seem frequent which I guess is not a good thing.

Dilvish December 17th, 2017 02:23

I have family in San Diego, and the fire got pretty close (within eyesight) some years ago.

I think people need to stop building houses near nature IMO.

ilm December 17th, 2017 02:46

I'm passing by Santa Barbara and the Thomas fire on monday on my way to the airport so I'm keeping a close eye on things. Seems the winds have increased again and the fire is getting closer to Santa Barbara, but only until sunday and containment seems to be increasing to 40%.

Highway 101 was closed for a time last week, hoping it will stay open on monday.

Thrasher December 17th, 2017 05:04

My brother’s house burned down in the San Diego Cedar fire of 2003. They were out of town when it happened so they couldn’t save a thing.

Thrasher December 19th, 2017 00:32

LA Times
Quote:

The wildfire had grown to 270,000 acres and spurred 104,607 people to flee their homes, authorities said. More than 8,500 firefighters have battled the blaze, the largest mobilization of fire crews to fight any wildfire in California history. The firefight has cost $130 million.

It’s now the third-largest fire in California history but is likely to become the second within the next day or two.

Between this and the multiple hurricanes and earthquakes, 2017 has certainly not been a good year for a lot of people.

Thrasher December 19th, 2017 01:21

A rather disastrous year for many, except the stock market.

Climate change has increased the fire season by 75 days or so. Some are predicting year round eventually.

Hurricane strength increases with climate changes.

Well as if the fire areas hadn't suffered enough. Areas spared get flooded with mud from a massive rainstorm this week. Some houses were destroyed. People were killed and are still missing since it happened in the middle of the night.

California is getting hammered. Really sorry to see it.

Zloth January 11th, 2018 06:48

ABC's reporter walked in front of a boulder in somebody's yard that had to be over 12ft tall. I was worried as he was walking along a flat, mud-covered area. If he wandered over a basement, he would sink down into it very fast.

I'm afraid that death toll is going to go up a lot. It sounds like it will be months before they can get running water again, too.

Eye January 11th, 2018 15:34

Gosh. Such an enormous damage. I hope you and your lovd ones are allright, Thrasher.
