Ah yes Bethsoft they can design a good sandbox but cant do story or writing. Just imagining the two studios teaming up to develop an original game makes me giddy.
CD Projekt's Witcher III also beat Bethesda's Fallout 4 for various GOTY awards. |

But it all depends on your preferences. I have a strong aversion to being told what to think and how to feel. Which is probably why I have a much easier time connecting with that kind of style. I like writing my own story and I like experiencing the story in my own way - and at my own pace. I love System Shock, Prey, Bioshock Infinite and so forth for the same reasons. I like being the one instigating the exposition - and I like player agency. I'm just not a big fan of hand-holding at all. |
I'm a fan of both Dart but I prefer Narrative driven games over sandboxes that's all. So yes it all comes down to preference, and I don't think one is better then the other.
All I know is Bethesda games become boring eventually to me at least.:) |

As I said, they're aiming for the masses - and some people seem to think that's the same as being great. I can't really argue against it in an objective fashion. I just know what I like and what I like somewhat less :) |

I can't imagine how anyone could enjoy the gameplay in ME:A much more than TW3, but it just goes to show how tastes can differ.
I put well over 100 hours into ME:A, though looking back I can't really say why except that it was probably just out of stubbornness. I got every planet to 100% viability and even completed most of the randomized quests. I kept thinking it was going to get better or that the endgame would make it all worthwhile. I felt a little foolish afterwards. While the combat was enjoyable (minus the repetitiveness of the enemies), that's really the only aspect of the gameplay that wasn't a letdown to me. I thought maybe the story, which started out well enough, was possibly going to be strong enough on its own to make it a good game. It wasn't. I'm already struggling to remember parts of it despite finishing the game this past summer. Still, I don't think it's a "bad" game. It just fell far short of what it could have been. I don't think it holds a candle to TW3 in terms of the overall experience, but to each his own and all that. :) |
I don't think I would have enjoyed Andromeda as much if I had exhausted everything to that extent :)
I lasted around 60 hours and eventually I was distracted by other things. I greatly enjoyed the atmosphere, the exploration and the progression of my character. The story was "ok" - nothing more. Witcher 3 is a harder thing to evaluate, because I had to force myself through it. I played it half a dozen times before I managed that, so it's a strange thing. After a few tries and years of looking back - things change. If I absolutely had to estimate both "complete" experiences - I'd probably have to actually finish Andromeda to be entirely fair. But - I have to say in all honesty that I enjoyed the gameplay of Andromeda quite a bit more - but since I also liked the story in Witcher 3 a LOT - it's a very hard thing to compare these games. They're so different, really. I shed tears in W3 - which definitely didn't happen in Andromeda. How to measure that? I don't know. But, compared to my favorite Bioware game KotOR? Witcher 3 doesn't even begin to compare. So…. Who knows. And who cares? :) We all like different things. I truly - honestly - hope that Cyberpunk will live up to expectations. I consider myself fortunate in not getting caught up in that hype. I have hype of my own for other games. |
Interesting. I don't think KotOR would even make my top 5 for Bioware games, and I'm a big Star Wars fan. I wouldn't put anything by Bioware, except perhaps Baldur's Gate 1&2, over any of The Witcher games.
I'll say I learned a valuable lesson from Andromeda at least. In the future, I'll be skipping the majority of sidequests in Bioware's games. They're simply not worth the time anymore. :) |
Ever since DA:O - it seems half of the side-quests in Bioware games have been about delivering crap to random NPCs halfway across the world or the galaxy.
Truly formulaic blueprint design in that way. Still, their games have their moments. Well, so far. Anthem does look decidedly uninspired - even within that context - so far. |
As for your KotOR opinion: SURPRISE! ;)
|
Shouldn't be. I thought I've mentioned once or twice before how overrated the game is. ;)
|
I felt KotOR is (rightfully) targeted for SW fan base - as someone who doesn't know a thing about SW, I found KotOR extremely shallow and boring, and much preferred ME.
I didn't quite enjoy TW3 (loved the story telling but the rest were meh) but eager to see how Cyberpunk will turn out. |
purple and JDR agreeing.
I'm in the Twilight Zone! |
We disagree on TW3 though :p ;)

@purple
You're not mainstream enough for Geralt ;) |

That's all I'm gonna say. |

Someone must have been blue-balled. I trust we all feel better now? ;)

Well the KotOR games may not be the best RPG's to play, but they are the only Star Wars RPG's available to play. As no other developer has made a Star Wars RPG in years.
Blame Disney for owning the IP, and EA for buying the rights to exclusively make games for that IP. Nowadays they focus more on games like Star Wars Battlefront. |
