Pathfinder: Kingmaker News Roundup

Pax West Previews

OnRPG
Quote:

Overall, Pathfinder: Kingmaker ticks all of the boxes of an old-school RPG experience. There’s a vibrant world, colorful characters, intrigue, suspense, and drama galore. There’s even an encyclopedia option for players who may not know the lore of the land, and simply hovering over anything highlighted in the text will give you a quick blurb about it. The game offers a wonderful blend of accessibility and challenge in one package, and it’s sure to appeal to a wide audience, even beyond people who craved more Baldur’s Gate stories they never received.

The gameplay we got to watch though… takes a lot more time than you think. This is a series where you’ll be doing a lot of role-playing, which isn’t a bad thing, but it does feel like it takes about as long as your standard game of Pathfinder. We didn’t get too much into the combat, as we basically grazed by it in the session, but it looks alright for what it was worth. Pathfinder: Kingmaker looks impressive, but we need more hands-on time to make a final decision about it. Thankfully, we’ll get a shot later this month when it comes out on September 25th.

Admittedly there was a lot of information to take in during my short demo with Pathfinder: Kingmaker, but all the same, I walked away impressed. It’s a game made for die-hard tabletop enthusiasts and CRPG faithful but there’s enough care put into it that newcomers won’t be totally scared off. For me at least, there was enough to entice me and want to learn the various systems once the game comes out proper on September 25th.
Interview with Chris Avellone on RPGSite
Quote:

Pathfinder: Kingmaker is set to release next week for PC - the first CRPG within the Pathfinder tabletop lore. We had a chance to ask a few questions with Narrative Designer Chris Avellone - known for his work on several Black Isle Studios and Obsidian Entertainment RPGs such as Icewind Dale and Pillars of Eternity. Here he discusses the game's storyline, writing, and characters.

Check out the interview with Chris below, and be sure to hit up our hands-on impressions of the game from PAX West last month.
Also don't forget the Reddit AMA where they answered questions.

Copper Coin September 22nd, 2018 22:21

It's funny. They've done several AMAs on that subreddit and post every update there, but there are still people asking whether it's turn-based or not.

TheRealFluent September 22nd, 2018 23:21

Avellone's interview sounds promising. Can't wait!

purpleblob September 23rd, 2018 02:04

It's a long weekend in Australia (at least for NSW), and I took an extra day off to enjoy Kingmaker :D

Hope I will get my key soon!!

Hyperion September 23rd, 2018 03:24

I would say the likelihood of me buying this on release day is about 99.98%. Is it just me, or does this game bear an uncanny resemblance to POE 2? I hope it's not nearly as goofy with horrid narration.

Copper Coin September 23rd, 2018 03:32

They're both inspired by Baldurs Gate, but beyond that I don't see the resemblance.

Both Kingmaker and PoE2 uses unity engine, so outwardly there are some similarities. I haven't played PoE2 so I don't know how bad the narrations were but I found Kingmaker pretty decent (storytelling wise, it was very engaging, although companion dialogues aren't great).

Arkadia7 September 23rd, 2018 05:58

I am in wait and see mode with this one. Not sure if it will end up being for me (drawbacks to me are kinda cartoony graphics, and the whole kingdom management thing can go take a hike as far as I'm concerned, bring on more rpg goodness instead!)
but regardless, will pay attention to what rpg watchers who play it say and think. ;)

Couchpotato September 23rd, 2018 06:31

Another Q&A video was released.

I hope this is a big success. I would love for this game to become a series.

Hastar September 23rd, 2018 14:11

I would love it to be a huge success also. Maybe than, Wizards of the Coast would get off their ass and make a new 5th edition D&D crpg.

Pre-load won't do me any good. What they should do is to let me start character creation now. It always takes me at least two days to create a character in a D&D game; too many choices. :S

We're more likely to see a 6th edition CRPG before that happens

Couchpotato September 23rd, 2018 23:30

The game will unlock in 1 day and 19 hours.:boogie::celebrate:

Why Pathfinder: Kingmaker Turned To Veteran A Storyteller
Quote:

Pathfinder is a household name for those familiar with world of role-playing games, but the uninitiated should know that the franchise has been a marvel in the tabletop space. With Pathfinder: Kingmaker, the series makes its video game debut--it's based on the Kingmaker module using Dungeons and Dragons rulesets from its tabletop counterpart. But since this is a single-player RPG, Pathfinder would need a robust narrative to bring its world to life, which is why developer Owlcat Games teamed up with one of gaming's great storytellers, Chris Avellone.

I had a blast with the CC. I went through the first chapter of the game 5 times with all kinds of characters. I still ended up with my favorite, a Ranger, but enjoyed Sorcerer, Barbarian, Druid, and Rogue.

I already own the game from KS and Beta playing. Very happy with it but for me personally I found parts of it generic. This does not mean bad but it was one con I noticed - if only for me and my own likes/dislikes on game.

By generic I mean the dialogue was a little bland IMO. There wasn't anything about the dialogue or characters that really jumped out at me … and I tend to be very forgiving when it comes to companions and dialogue. I didn't dislike it but it also didn't grab me like say MacCready in FO or Alistair in DAO did. That being said I do have a few characters I like and will bring with me.

Art theme is also a bit general to me - nice but didn't feel unique in any real way. Story I have very much enjoyed so far. It seems a fairly solid game to me even if parts felt a little plain and vanilla. But that is me - just some quick thoughts from playing it off and on since I got into the beta.

Total plus to the CC though - really love how in depth it is.

EDIT: MY first full play will be with a Ranger and wolf companion. For followers it will be Regongar, Linzi, Amari, Octavia, and either Tristiam or Harrim. That might change as I get deeper in but I know I want the first three based on playing with them so far.

purpleblob September 24th, 2018 01:05

I think my companions will be:

Linzi, Amiri, Valerie, Tristian, Octavia/Ekundayo.

Copper Coin September 24th, 2018 01:06

Do companions gain experience outside your party? I like to switch them around

I doubt anyone here is surprised by your choice wolfgrimdark. ;)

I'm thinking of making an Inquisitor, I'm not sure for which god though. I'm not that well versed in Pathfinder lore.

There is a setting for it, I saw it in the overview video Couchpotato posted above.

TheRealFluent September 24th, 2018 03:08

Are we all ready for this behemoth? I feel like this will be far and away the closest we get to Baldur's Gate. It's going to be deep.

Copper Coin September 24th, 2018 03:24

Honestly I'm only enthused because everyone else seems to be.

Pathfinder is a generic and inferior D&D clone, and this looks about the same. My fear is that since the game is 120 hours long, it will also end up being very repetitive.

I'm happy to eat crow if it's a great game, but it wont be because of either the combat (it should be turn-based) or the setting (Golarion is boring and uninspired).

Not everyone has memory bad as yours. We get it

TomRon September 24th, 2018 07:31

Damn. How am I supposed to fit this in between BT4, PoE2 and Star Control? And Insomnia is releasing too, since I backed it it woul be weird to at least not try it. Can someone send me more time?

akarthis September 24th, 2018 10:27

I hope it will be a great rp experience. I'm losing hope the last few years.

mercy September 24th, 2018 12:21

Yay! Medieval Codex resembling UI!! I thought about the same thing to spice up our game story telling windows! But ours will be a little bit more like a codex from a Dark Fantasy / Dark Medieval / Demon infested world, and this shows on the clerics how they have painted the codex = the story. :)

Well said! I have seen great monsters in the Pathfinder compendiums, but I had to skim through a lot of monster descriptions to find that few and there was a surprising number of mediocrity. Still if they ever decide to create a turn-based Pathfinder game, I'm in! :D

Preload - soon

It seems the preload will open at 5:30PM CET - so very soon. I have already obtained my key from the owlcat site (no email was sent - yet) - and it's sitting in my Steam list waiting for the grand opening ;-)

I'm off to a conference on Wed so won't really have time to play this week…

Hm. Seems that something went wrong with the preload (not yet up) - and valve have shifted the release date later on the 25th :-S

purpleblob September 24th, 2018 22:12

Got my keys too!!! :D I usually prefer GoG but I chose Steam for Kingmaker since beta testing was done on latter platform.
