I also don't consider Battletech to be a RPG. It has about as much story as new Xcom games and even less character customization.

What role do you play in VC??

The two games look like the same genre to me. Both give you many people in your squad. Both give you no way to customize how those people look. BattleTech lets you customize each character's skills, though there aren't a whole lot of choices. If I remember VC, you don't ever upgrade individual characters. Instead, you upgrade everyone that's in the same class as a group. BattleTech has actual travel in it, too, while VC just lets you pick the battle. VC does have some costume options.

I'm fine calling them both tactical RPGs or calling them both strategy games. Calling them different things, though, makes no sense to me at all unless you just go by the marketing blurb for each game.

The first of the new XCom's won second place in RPG of the Year here on the Watch! (It was a rather lean year.)

Whatever floats you boat man as this debate will just go in a circle anyway.

Tactical RPGs - are a genre of video games which incorporates elements of traditional role-playing video games with that of tactical games, emphasizing tactics rather than high-level strategy. In Japan, these games are known as "Simulation RPGs"
*Also please re-read this HBS does not market BattleTech as an RPG never has. Also for the record X-Com is not an RPG game either it's a pure strategy game at best.

Actually each VC4 recruit has their own set of traits you can unlock by using recruits during missions or skirmishes (missions use unlocks new traits faster than skirmishes). While "training" (level up) improves all recruits of a certain class, it's not possible to unlock recruits' traits through it.

These traits benefit different stats. Some negative traits that a recruit has by default can be transformed into positive ones if you don't ignore sidemissions.

VC4 is a hybrid, partially RPG. How much of RPG is inside it, well, it's not my place to answer. But one thing is sure - unless scripted, trashmobs during a mission never respawn endlessly. If killed, they're dead. Permanently. That's probably the reason people have a hard time to accept it's jRPG.

Never said it wasn't a bloody fun game.

Now back on topic it seems PoE 2 had a few leaks the week.

If they implement turn based combat I will need to play PoE 2 afterall :D

Carnifex December 21st, 2018 15:58

Yeah, going to a pure turn based combat system would make me want to play this sequel even more than I already do.

Darth Tagnan December 23rd, 2018 19:34

I would have picked Kingdom Come - but PoE2 is great.

joxer December 26th, 2018 10:27

Seems PCG went with RPGs everywhere possible this year. Beside Eternity2 for best RPG, they've chosen AC:Odyssey as the best openworld and Yakuza 0 as the best setting.

Couchpotato December 26th, 2018 10:32

Knew Assassin Creed:Odyssey would win but didn't expect Yakuza 0. Hopefully Sega releases the other Yakuza gmaes, and yes that includes all the spin-offs on Steam.
