Baldur's Gate 3 - Preview @RockPaperShotgun

Baldur's Gate 3 has been previewed by RockPaperShotgun.

Quote:

They call it Ceremorphosis. The excruciating seven day process by which a humanoid might transform into a Mind Flayer. Stick one illithid tadpole in the brain and one week later you've got an octopus for a head and a craving for more grey matter. And what better visual metaphor for the return of Baldur's Gate: the adventure that lodged in the hearts and minds of every RPG fan of a certain age, until it could find a host capable of doing it justice. The search took 20 years. That body belongs to Larian Studios. The game is Baldur's Gate 3.

And all this is true of Baldur's Gate 3? "Yeah. The party's going to be big, exploration's going to be big, player agency is going to be big, decisions are going to be big, multiplayer is going to be big - and single player, obviously. The originals were also tough games, so challenges are going to be big."

If you've played Larian's Divinity: Original Sin you'll know all this can be said of those games, too. Baldur's Gate was based on a modified version of the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rulebook, and Larian is a studio partially born from a passion for D&D. Several campaigns run continuously in the office, and Vincke has long turned to the player handbooks and monster manuals for inspiration. "The thing Wizards Of The Coast is incredibly good at is making idea generators," he says. "When you read a campaign, you get plenty of ideas that you roll with and create your own adventures."

Thanks Farflame!

More information.

Holy sh-t, its official then. If any one can, Larian can.

Maylander June 6th, 2019 21:29

This is one risky project, because the bar is not only incredibly high, but also heavily affected by nostalgia. I wish them the best of luck!

Oh yes, I'll obviously pre-order. That goes without saying. Playing it on day 1.

Giovanni1983 June 6th, 2019 21:31

I just did not believe the rumors were true.

I am more than excited….i cannot believe it's true. And Larian is making it which is probably one of the best developers when it comes to this style (in my opinion).

I am pre-ordering the shit out of this one. Cannot wait!!!

Dez June 6th, 2019 21:33

Whoa! You can call me excited officially.

johnnysd June 6th, 2019 21:34

bleh…..they get farther and farther away from what made them great every game of late

TheRealFluent June 6th, 2019 21:35

So many huge RPGs coming. Baldur's Gate 3, Bloodlines 2, Outer Worlds, lots of great stuff coming. I'm hyped!

Hastar June 6th, 2019 21:43

The Mind Flayer, one of the greatest creatures ever created. Can't go wrong by focusing on that.

purpleblob June 6th, 2019 22:05

All the news lately been what I don't want to hear. Sigh.

Strafe June 6th, 2019 22:07

I hope Larian can do it, but my problem with this is that they make their games "collorfull" and even when bad things happen there is humor and hope and stupid COLOR.
And I for one remember Baldur's Gate as dark and gritty…

At least it is a new story and not continuing the old. I think it will be a good game with plenty of depth in the systems department. That always impressed me greatly with bg2 and I expect Larian are focusing on it likewise.

I want to see how they do the magic battles and I am hoping for a 6 member party.

Stingray June 6th, 2019 22:13

I hope "the party’s going to be big" means we get a 6-man party instead of the smaller ones in recent games. Beyond that, and confirmation of 5th edition, all seems like a non-story so far. We still know pretty much nothing.

Nereida June 6th, 2019 22:18

I'll go into this game with a fresh and open mind, and a hunger for fun and adventure. I could be one of the nostalgic naysayers preaching about the olden times that will pile up in these boards faster than Chiktikka Fastpaws because I played the first two games when they were released, but I hate that kind of person, and I won't become one.

I hope this game triumphs, and I'll give it every opportunity to amaze me without clinging to self-induced nostalgia and rosy retrospection.

Good luck Larian, here's hoping you make us proud.

I need everything that is not dark and gritty aka anything that is not dark souls.
If that's BG3, I'm in.

As 99 % of ALL games are right now.

We live in the (Heavy) Metal Age of gaming right now.

You don't trust Larian, Purple?

BG had its lighthearted moments, but it wasn't the focus. IMO a balance between the two would be the best. I don't want it to be too dark.

DarkELVES June 6th, 2019 22:31

Holy schmoly! Go Larian! Proud to be Belgian! lol

Stefan99 June 6th, 2019 22:33

Can't wait. Hope Larion does justice to the BG legacy.

Ursusdraconis June 6th, 2019 22:37

The dutch are proud at our neighbours!
Go Larian!!!

booboo June 6th, 2019 22:39

At least we won't be subjected to Imoen or Aerie's whining about her wings in a new setting ;-)

Morrandir June 6th, 2019 22:53

So it actually happens. Wow.

As I've expected Swen seems to know exactly what made Baldur's Gate the game it was. I hope they can stay true to the core.

The only thing that worries me a bit is the announcement that multiplayer will be big.

That's just scratching the surface.

usgamer interviewed Swen
Quote:

Vincke is also excited by the possibilities afforded by physics-based synchronization, which he calls a "very big thing."

"In the past that was a big problem that we had, because we couldn't just send our entire physics simulation and have it synched. It didn't work," Vincke says. "Now it can work. You can have lots of gameplay."

No, I don't think D:OS games are that great. And think their style don't really match BG series.

rjshae June 6th, 2019 23:21

Yes, it's hard to say how well Larian's approach will work with the Forgotten Realms setting. It's sure to be creative; I just hope it isn't too goofy. Although BG had its goofy moments.

Kordanor June 6th, 2019 23:29

No word yet regarding RTwP yet, was there?
Considering it's BG3 I'd assume RTwP, but considering Larian had biggest success with TB, well…I still hope for TB or a system which makes both possible.

Silver June 6th, 2019 23:30

Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie who was previously a writer at InXile has been working on bg3.

If it's server-side online only, then fuck 'em.

I hope they'll show gameplay at E3. It does make sense to show how it works rather then just talk about it.

Ephiron June 7th, 2019 00:23

Interesting interview here: https://www.pcgamesn.com/baldurs-gat…oper-interview

I don't think I've seen this bit mentioned in others.

it takes over 100 hours to finish a campaign, roughly.

Particularly psyched for Stygian, personally.

sakichop June 7th, 2019 01:31

Add me to the excited list.

I’m not worried about larian’s “style” or them making the game too humorous or colorful. I think they know the source material and will respect it. BG did have humor after all. Also there was nothing funny, cheerful or colorful about that trailer. :)

I wasn’t a big fan of there over use of the elements in there combat system but i think still to D&D rules should remedy that.

Now i’m Just waiting to hear if its TB or RTWP. Either is fine with me.

TheMadGamer June 7th, 2019 02:03

So happy to hear that a major fantasy setting rpg is in the works… I never tire of wizards and elves and forests.

Carnifex June 7th, 2019 02:15

Well, I'll say this for Larian and friends, they went big-dog on this. May the wind be beneath their wings!

redman5427 June 7th, 2019 02:43

I think the are also the perfect studio to do this and hope they take their time.
Just not too much time. I miss Viconia.

FizzyShellfish June 7th, 2019 02:49

Very excellent news!

BG games were full of silly stuff "Butt kicking—For Goodness!" giant miniature space hamsters, etc.

I'm a little tired of the forgotten realms. And I felt like the BG games went through a checklist of D&D nostalgia, which was fun, but I'd like to not revisit all that stuff again.

Overall, I'm thrilled. I'll have my jar of Keoghtum's Ointment ready.

You do realize this is going to take place in the same setting and location as the older games, right?

Confirmed appearance at E3 PC Gaming Show.

rjshae June 7th, 2019 02:58

I was thinking: is this another indication that the computer RPG leadership is passing to Europe? EA (and Bioware) is being destroyed from within by bean counters, while Obsidian and inXile are being assimilated by the Borg. Bethesda may end up the only prominent American RPG company left.
