Archetype Entertainment - Wizards of the Coast Formed Studio
@Bluesnews A new studio formed by Wizards of the Coast called Archetype Entertainment, is being headed up by James Ohlen, formerly of Bioware.

Good to see WotC is taking their franchise serious again.
Although, I'm still anxious how BG III will turn out… |

Regarding BGIII I guarantee it won't live up to anyone's expectations. However it will likely be a good game for those that dont have any. It's very difficult to recreate the nostalgic emotions of younger experiences. |
I almost got excited and then I saw “ set in a new science fiction universe “ and all excitement died.
|
Cool. With the decline of Bethesda Game Studios and Bioware, we can use a new AAA studio to step into the fray.
|
Judging by the number of key job openings, they don't seem close to having a release yet. The 'story-driven' preference seems good though as it implies they won't be focused on MMOs. One can hope, anyway.
|
D20 sci-fi RPG? Perhaps turn-based? Sure!
|
I like the focus on single-player story-driven PC RPG.
|
Right now I'll stay optimistic and hopeful that something wonderful will come out of this for all of us to enjoy.
|
Meh we'll see his last game was Anthem at BioWare.
Hope its better then the last announcement of the Drizzt Do'Urden Action game. |
Only time will tell. I also would like more story driven D&D but at this point it just sound like marketing ploy.
|
It looks like this has been going on since August. Ohlen basically took time off then WotC lured him back.
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articl…s-of-the-coast A new IP with new rules is completely abnormal for WotC. It smacks of desperation to me to get a new video game project going - anything - and not something 100% with 5e rules. |

That was my original experience trying to run it at acceptable frames on my excellent Pentium rig. Such a poorly programmed game, but it only made me more desperate to play. :D |
Well, better 30 years late than never.

I'll concede your right but my enthusiasm is meh at best.
Wont say I'm sorry as I played to many disappointing games lately. Also as said its been many years since WotC allowed a traditional RPG. They were content to only license MMO's. Attitude seems to have changed lately. Probably due to all the funded kickstarter RPGs. Especially Divinity: Original Sin. I'm not counting that failed game Sword Coast Legends. At least we have Baldur's Gate III which I hope is good.:fingerscrossed: |
BG3 will be good. It's Larian.
|
Doesn't guarantee anything.

I'm afraid this game will be another real-time hack&slash junk along the lines of another earlier EPIC: Pillars of Eternal Degeneracy.
|
I'll hold off on the excitement until we actually know what they're aiming for. For all I know it could be a phone game with micro transactions, that's apparently where the money is at these days. And even if it's not it's not improbable it's a MP focused game, be it MMO or smaller scale.

An Expanse RPG or an Starfinder RPG would bei nice

need to see a lot more to be excited, these guys have zero experience making games and it will all depend on who they hire. |

Don't forget WotC isn't its own entity. Its owned by Hasbro which is great in one perspective as they have very deep pockets. Given their unwillingness to spend anything significant from that pocket in the last 20 years makes me leery. Fingers crossed whoever they hire makes a quality game, regardless of the setting. |
They should buy Knights of the Chalice II. Get rid of the disks and get that game a proper schedule with deadlines ;)
Not a huge sci fi fan but I enjoyed Elex a good amount. |
Right now I'd prefer other companies leaving the Knights of the Chalice series alone. The first one is so good I'd be concerned about the series being acquired by someone that would squander the potential.
|
Yes, the first thing that comes to my mind when I see the name D&D is all that Science Fiction lore… :D
|
Yes, just seems odd, a pity, and most of all a dumb business move to begin their studio working on a brand new IP when they have access to all the popular D&D properties… Unless there's some convoluted licensing stuff I don't know about where they have to pay some other company but I thought Hasbro / WotC fully owns the rights to all D&D IP. Makes absolutely no sense.

This article talk a little bit about the roles of former bio-ware employee roles in this company:

I'm taking a wait see approach for this game, or in my words before meh. |
Perhaps they're going to do something with Star Frontiers?
https://nerdarchy.com/blast-from-the…tar-frontiers/ One can hope… |
