I don't know if this is popular, but I dislike the character and all around it, so this is a hard pass for me, probably even if the game was pretty good. I just couldn't enjoy playing as that thing.

This is one of the most interesting projects in development IMHO.

Something fresh in a known world. I have hope.

I think the character is very intersting, but playing as him?
It would basically have to be a stealth game, and those aren't really my cup of tea.

What does it have to do with RPGs, anyway?

Lord of the Rings is one of the biggest reasons D&D and RPGs exist. Pretty much any news about it would be of interest to an RPG oriented site imo. Pretty sure you play the role of Gollum in this game. While I also have zero interest in the product, it definitely is role-playing.

The problem is that role-playing games no longer have any definition. Everything is role-playing now, so this site can't be distinguished from any other gaming site. Most of the recent posts are actually about strategy and tactics games. These are battle games for the most part with almost no role-playing at all.

Yeah I'm not sure this is for me (it's probably a stealth or survival game I guess) but it's potentially an interesting spin on things.

I personally love the survival-rpg hybrids but they typically don't get any main page coverage here because Hidden-X nor Silver play these types. I try to cover the ones I play in the forum postings though and I think that's good enough.

I think they're even more niche than the endless jrpg strategy tactics games with horrible graphics and underage girls as party member games. :biggrin:

I'm playing Rimworld at the moment - does that qualify? I'm open to posting news about those games so if you see something interesting let us know.

A new Lotr game? Yes please. My problem is that I just really don't want to play as Golum. He is just repulsive in every way. Sure his tale is major part of LOTR saga and it happens to be a very tragic one indeed, but to pick him as a main character… What were they smoking? Must be that famous longbottom Leaf…

What I still cannot figure out is why we've yet to have a true, deep RPG set in Middle Earth? It's almost 20 years since the movies ushered in a wave of LotR games and we've had RTSs, action games, an MMO and one or two games that have a bit of an RPG angle but certainly don't fall into the kind of game I'd expect many would want to see.

Who wouldn't want to be dropped into Middle Earth with a character of their making and be able to head off and adventure in the world, exploring the next vista ahead, meeting new characters and creating their own small story? I know some people make the point that the story of the ring and lore around it makes this more difficult - but I don't see why. Choose a different time period or make the story a smaller, tangential one to the main events in the books.

Grrr… so frustrated we've still seen no such game.

This is as if someone was trying to do an RPG out of The Pinguin Man …

I'm cool with you guys posting about anything that catches your fancy. Just because "I'm" not interested in a bunch of the news doesn't mean "somebody" isn't. I do think we should stick to PC-only; at least for official news postings.

As far as Rimworld specifically, yep I would read stuff about that game. It is often suggested to me by Steam, but nothing has made me pull the trigger on it yet. I think it has become impossible to stick to RPG news because everything is RPG today. It used to be a genre on its own but that isn't the case now.

In my view this site does a good job with its posts. I would much rather see "too many" posts to include something I'm not interested in than not enough posts bypassing something I might be interested in, because I can always just skip posts of games I'm not interested in. Erring on the side of more content seems like a good approach to me.

My first reaction to seeing the title of this game, playing as Gollum, is similar to others' in that it doesn't seem like something which would interest me. However, as with most games I will wait and see how it is once it's released, and I certainly wouldn't rule it out before then.

Exactly this! This has frustrated me for years. Make it a mashup of Skyrim, The Witcher 3 and Gothic 2 but put it in middle earth. I would play that game to no end…

There are two true deep crpgs based on Lord of the Rings made by Interplay from the early 90s, very pixelated graphics and bad UI but great narrative and good sidequests, I played the first one:
