You know your game is a mess when seven years later bugs still aren't fixed.

Dude that seems like most games now. Either bugs are still getting fixed seven years later or the devs just stop caring about the bugs. :D

I can semi-agree but the fixed bug lists in these patches is atrocious. They even admit some are still not fixed and there might even be new bugs because of the patch.

Only comparable examples are open world Bethesda games. Heck what's even more hilarious is it's a remaster of a twenty+ old game with even more bugs.

NWN EE another Beamdog remaster is the same.

Thank god these guys didn't make Baldur's Gate III.

largh January 14th, 2021 08:24

…and here I thought Baldur's Gate had no bugs. A bit the same way than women never stink or fart.

Couchpotato January 14th, 2021 08:36

I had no bugs stopping me from finishing quests in the classic versions.

Anyway thanks for that sick analogy. I'm going to go throw up now.:puke:

JDR13 January 14th, 2021 10:36

It's fantastic that Beamdog is still supporting BG: EE this strongly so many years after release. Say what you want about them, but they take care of their games a lot better than many other developers.

Now we just need to find the source code for Icewind Dale II. :)

It's not seven years, it's 23 ;)

Weren't a lot of those bugs or other ones in the original games? Bioware wasn't very good at QA, in both BG and BG2 they poured more and more until the last day, only to find out the game had thousands of bugs - the Bioware book mentions 15000 bugs in BG2, that had to be fixed during the last 3 months before release. Jaheira was apparently still full of bugs on release, for example, not sure how much was fixed after that.

The code was very badly written, "spaghetti code" as one of the devs put it. Beamdog had to deal with that and adapt it to new hardware, and fix what they could which sometimes broke something else, I don't envy their task. At least they persisted and from what I've seen, it's not bad at all.

I'm not sure Beamdog would have been as "colourful" as Larian if they had made BG3, but you can hardly compare what they had to go through with their Enhance Editions to making a new game from scratch.

---

For information, it's not just Baldur's Gate which benefits from the update:
- Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition
- Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear
- Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition
- Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition

This question regularly comes back in their forums

It's gone poof as BioWare/Interplay lost the floppy's/cd's. Beamdog mentioned there was another way but they don't have the resources, or time required to make the remaster.

Which is typical of the developer and the reason why you don't see any original RPGs from them either. I had high hopes for those unannounced RPGs but they were cancelled.

I don't think it's the amount of bugs so much as Beamdog simply being anal about hunting them. For example, Bethesda's games probably have a comparable amount of bugs, but they're content to let the fans deal with them on their own.

It's apparently a tradition with them, they also lost the source code of Neverwinter Nights for the Mac. The dev responsible for that version moved his G4 tower because it was taking a lot of space on his desk, and put it with other computers elsewhere, only to discover the IT got rid of the lot and shredded the hard drives. This was the only copy of the last source code :anxious:

kazga January 14th, 2021 12:36

The whole "lost source code" thing could just be folks not willing to share it due to not being sure of its legal ramifications.

Mosaic January 14th, 2021 23:07

I'm in the middle of a full Trilogy playthrough right now, hope this doesn't cause any problems.

Just don’t cross the streams.

rjshae January 15th, 2021 04:40

Might be worth another go just to see if they really did improve the pathfinding.

Carnifex January 15th, 2021 05:39

Weird, I got through the game with no issues roughly five years ago. And yes, speaking as someone that lived four blocks away from their offices, and showed up unannounced more than once, that team rocks!! Consider mine Beamdog forever, excelsior!!

FYI spaghetti code is a common term in developer language.

I know, but I didn't know the "ravioli" and "lasagna" ones, they're funny

I'm more sceptical about their translation in French though, I never heard them anyway, we have other colourful names for that. It's probably a regional thing.

Yep, they're new for me as well.
Perhaps I can finally shine by combining my mediocre (but actually existing) knowledge of both italian pasta and software development and invent some new code descriptions.

vanedor January 15th, 2021 17:08

Just reading this make me want to start a new game of BG.

Carnifex January 15th, 2021 17:28

You'll not regret it, Vanedor, it's a fine game! I recommend getting it from either great old games or Beamdog themselves, unless you already own it, in which case I say, game on and enjoy!

Hastar January 15th, 2021 17:52

I have just started a new game. You always forget how evil level 1 was in AD&D. Can't even go to -10 hps at 0 you are dead. Getting to lvl 2 actually takes some time. In modern games you would be lvl 5 in that time. I enjoy the difficulty at core rules but think death at 0 Hps is pretty harsh since that is one or two hits for most classes.

Carnifex January 15th, 2021 17:57

You really just have to play smart at the beginning, and not charge straight into fights without planning first. It gets much easier once you get a few more hit points for your folks. =)

No worry, I have it already :-) (on evil Steam, however :P ) . Last time I did play it was in 2014.

It's so one of the best game ever.

Steam is good in this case because it has the branch road_to_2.6, which should already be better than the previous version, for all the reasons in the article. I haven't encountered any issue, anyway.

Unfortunately they wouldn't put the beta on GOG, no idea why.

Not only that, but I think they also changed how many HP you recover from resting in the EE version. I was playing it recently and noticed my party only got 1 HP from a standard 8 hour rest. I thought I remembered healing more than that in the original version.

I'm also playing on core rules now though as opposed to Normal difficulty, so maybe something is different there.

Morrandir January 15th, 2021 22:55

Good thing they only send their level 1 assassins to Candlekeep. ;)

I have the same on Normal, it also surprised me how little they recovered.

Since I haven't played the original, I can't compare, but I checked both the original's and EE's manuals and they say the same, you don't recover much HP when camping in the wilds (no formula given, it must be in the D&D rules which I don't have).
You have to rent a room, and more comfy ones recover more HP. And priests can use healing spells (not sure if that's only the remaining ones but I guess so).

It's been awhile since I really played BG, so I'm probably just remembering it wrong. I also might have been using the "Rest until fully healed" option before.

Play smart? What kind of crazy talk is that with my band of half-orc barbarians and dwarven berserkers. Crom, I have no time for your little mages in their silly hats.

Carnifex January 17th, 2021 16:44

Uhm, you aren't likely to find someone that eschews playing mage-types more than I do. My teams are usually 2-3 tanks, 2 rogues, one healer and maybe one mage/sorcerer. I tend to despise finger-wagglers, for the most part.

Mosaic January 22nd, 2021 02:12

If they really do fix pathfinding then after the patch may be a good time to take that dive. The pathfinding is probably the only real gripe I have. 10/10 games.

I'm not really a modding guy but try the NPC Project for BG1 to make the companions chatty like in BG2.

TheRealFluent January 22nd, 2021 02:43

kinda related, but i'm really excited to play the original baldur's gate on my vintage mac  i know it's unpatched and all but i really want to experience it as they did back when the game came out. (also have several playthroughs of bg:ee and SoD too)
