Interesting selection, fingers crossed for 2022 for most though I would think.

Denril December 29th, 2021 19:11

No dying light 2 or elex 2 on the list .
Weird.

Weird.

Dying Light 2 is not a RPG and Piranha Bytes’ games can be too clunky for most gamers. Although I still think it deserved a placed in this top.

That's debateable, but so are King Arthur and Final Fantasy Origin.

Heckle December 29th, 2021 20:03

On a partially unrelated topic to this post. I really do appreciate how you guys put the time stamps and game list on each video link news article. I don’t know if this is something that just comes with the videos or whatever but it’s super nice to see the list without necessarily watching the video itself. Thanks!

Carnifex December 29th, 2021 22:58

Most certainly there are a few on this list that I'm pretty keen on, the upcoming year is looking pretty game-worthy.

henriquejr December 29th, 2021 23:54

BG 3 should be one of the Most Anticipated RPGs of 2023. It's on the wrong list :P

On the other hand, it'll be anticipated every day in 2022, hard to be more anticipated than that ;)

Couchpotato December 30th, 2021 02:28

Meh every year I hear it's looking to be a great year for RPGs. Tell ya what half of all RPG games will either be disappointments, or have their release date pushed back to 2023.

Yep I'm including games not on the list also.:p

My money is on early 2025 since Larian seems to be in no hurry to finish the game. At this point in time it feels like they announced the game to early. Just my opinion.

daveyd December 30th, 2021 18:56

My own top 10 most anticipated RPGs of (hopefully) 2022:

1. Expeditions: Rome
2. Broken Roads
3. Colony Ship
4. SKALD: Against the Black Priory
5. Zoria: Age of Shattering
6. Prisonscape
7. The Iron Oath
8. Death Trash
9. Sacred Fire
10. Cyber Knights: Flashpoint

Some of these surely won't actually be (fully) release next year, but I'm glad I could even come up with 10 upcoming RPGs I'm quite interested in. Some others I'm following too but their release next year (or at all) is very doubtful.

Also looking forward to the Solasta DLC campaign that's in the works (which rumor has it seems to be of a similar size the main campaign).

Redglyph December 30th, 2021 21:30

It's still a bit early but I suppose it will be soon time to vote here in the Watch. So it's time to prepare ;)

With no particular order,
  • Expeditions: Rome
  • Urban Strife
  • Weird West
  • Broken Roads
  • Starfield
  • Project Haven
  • Baldur's Gate 3 (if …, even though unlikely)
  • Gothic (Remake)
  • Kerbal Space Program 2 (I know… not an RPG I guess :p)

There are a few others but it depends on their pace and how they mature (Colony Ship, Survive the fall, Cyber Knights, Black Geyser, …)

True, but there are nice surprises too. :)

I think I had more disappointments in big budget games than indies, but maybe I have a selective memory. And it is becoming just a memory, since I'm rarely buying anything else than indies these days, it seems.

JDR13 December 30th, 2021 23:31

I keep forgetting about Broken Roads. That and Monomyth have been flying under the radar.

I don't feel like Gothic Remake is getting released in 2022.

wolfgrimdark December 30th, 2021 23:42

I realized I don't have any games on my radar coming up in 2022/2023 except BG3 and Starfield, at least not any with high interest. My memory not being great I pulled up a list of all RPG's coming out, or may come out, for 2022 … assuming the site that made the list has a similar idea of what an RPG is ….

So:

Baldur's Gate 3
Waylanders (although this is not high on my list as I own the EA and its so-so)
Starfield (this could be awesome or not … I love Beth games so hoping its good)

Hmmm … well at the moment those are the only ones I can find and probably shouldn't even put Waylander on the list. Not sure when War Tales final version will be out. I am sure I am missing some obscure ones .. not sure when Greed will come out either.

HiddenX December 30th, 2021 23:58

A lot of good RPGs will be released next year.

My top 3 are:
ELEX 2
Vestaria Saga Gaiden: The Sacred Sword of Silvanister
The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero

purpleblob1 December 31st, 2021 00:17

I have a few RPGs I'm keeping my eyes on but can't say I'm looking forward to any due to lack of info or too far away from release.

Monster Hunter: Rise will be out on PC in early Jan but I will be using my hubby as a impression tester ;)

I will also wait for Watch and other reviews on Expeditions: Rome since the demo didn't sell it to me.

Others that I'm following news are Hogwarts Legacy & Broken Roads.

I noticed Motisimal Gaming included Waylanders in his most anticipated 2022 games which surprised me. Since this is party based RTwP game, I may keep an eye on it too but set my expectation low.

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot Steelrising too - is it expected to be out in 2022?

Couchpotato December 31st, 2021 04:53

Two rules to remember you can only pick three games each for the RPGWatch GOTY and for most anticipated of 2022. So those are the rules and longer lists will disqualify you.:p

My GOTY Picks
  1. Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous
  2. ATOM RPG Trudograd
  3. Cyberpunk 2077
Most anticipated for 2022
  1. Elex 2
  2. Starfield
  3. Urban Strife

It should, it's expected in June :)

(at the end of the trailer, as usual)
loading…

PS: I think Mortismal Gaming has reached the end of what he could make a video of, and he's slowly getting out of his comfort zone to diversify a little bit. ;)

Don't we have to pick them for the shortlist first?

Hey, I'm surprised you put Pathfinder in front of ATOM, I thought you'd have done the opposite. And right, I still have to play … both, actually. I haven't even seen ATOM: Trudograd yet.

To be fair there's not a lot of communication on Monomyth, undoubtedly because it's a single-person project (with external help in some areas). Sometimes there's a short update by Rat Tower on Twitter but that's not frequent.

I don't see how he could manage to have a full release in June 2022 (KS target), or even in 2022, but who knows.

We'll see. I'd prefer he take his time rather than trying to meet a date that might have him rushing it. He seems to know what he's doing though.

I think there's a better chance we see Monomyth than the Gothic remake.

I guess he have to keep building his viewer number. Bit of a shame.

Yeah, maybe he switched to full-job streamer and needs to increase his subscriptions and income. There's definitely a change, and IMO, not always for the best. Hopefully he'll find a good balance and a better rhythm. He's normally very focused on stats, so he's good at talking about that.

He's not the only one to fight for audience, many others start releasing videos on about anything at some point, it seems. That's when the sponsored content starts to come in, the t-shirt shop, and then we know it's time to find another channel. ;) (so callous of me to say so)

Not really the shortlist was started because of the complaining about certain games shouldn't be on the list. In the past you just picked three or wrote the game you wanted. Nowadays it's just more complicated because of how it's done.

At least we don't score games based on points or whether you completed it.:p

As for Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous I have gripes about the game but you can't deny it was the most faithful RPG of the year compared to the rest of the competition.

What other game allows you to role-play so well? BG 3 but it's not releases yet.

JDR13 December 31st, 2021 23:35

Speaking of Monomyth, he released an update today. @Redglyph Maybe he heard you. ;)

I’m only interested in the mainstream stuff from that list, i.e. BG3 and Starfield but both aren’t going to be 2022 games for me. I’ll wait for the complete editions in both cases so Starfield might become a 2024 game for me and BG3… Enhanced Edition… Definitive Edition… Definitive Edition Reloaded…. yeah, I’ll probably play it in 2028 or so

Never underestimate the reach of the Watch!

That's perfect, thanks! Let's squeeze a last nice news before next year (fireworks are already going off everywhere, it's a real battlefield :D)

Dafela January 5th, 2022 12:23

PCgamer also didn't manage to put Elex 2 to their 22 anticipated PCgames list:
https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/the-22-mo…games-of-2022/

I guess it is for me if I wouldn't play the 20 games from the 22 long list.

That's because Slime Rancher 2 is obviously much more intriguing. ;)
