Survive and unveil the mysteries of the Weird West through the intertwined destinies of its unusual heroes in an immersive sim from the co-creators of Dishonored and Prey.

More information.

It looks intriguing; a cross-genre RPG with stylized graphics similar to Borderlands. Hopefully it's good.

joxer March 31st, 2022 21:11

Says "immersive sim".
No buy from me.

Btw, can someone tell me is this bundle worth buying?

I despise isometric games with character movement by directional keys instead of mouse clicks.

I know I've missed out on some great games because of this, but this control method makes me feel like a spazz.

I'm not bothered by different control methods, but I generally don't like an isometric view + real-time combat.

There are a few exceptions, but if a game is going to be isometric, I strongly prefer it to be party-based and have RTwP or turn-based combat.

Ehhh, the more I read about this one the less I think it's for me. Which is too bad as I dearly enjoy the western genre.

Wait, no navigation with mouse clicks?

You have to type in x,y coordinates to move.

Lucky Day April 1st, 2022 01:40

or use a PS controller?

Other concerns is you can't opt out of data collection. you have to accept it to play the game and you may have already given some of it away by the time it gets there. This might be a violation of European law.
Gog version might let you play offline but you could accidentally give your info away again if you reconnect.

Limited on your choice of playable characters - 5 in total.

Steep price. Not an issue for me but maybe some.

I don't think it's a choice? Everyone plays as all five of those characters. The game is told in chapters, each with a different protagonist.

It's a bit strange that there have been two western RPG (or RPG adjacent) games in the past several years, this and Hard West, and both of them are told with different protagonists throughout.

Couchpotato April 1st, 2022 02:34

Well I hate games told through multiple pov's. Might still pick it up if the game is offered cheaply in any future Steam sale. Hope we get another Dishonored game someday.

I'll probably get it given how few RPGs with this setting exist or are likely to exist, but I agree. I would rather be able to create a character from one of these templates and play through the entire thing as that character.

I gotta say, this is where Game Pass really shines. Games I'm kinda interested in, but don't want to readily part with a lot of money for? Yes please.

I wish the rest of us had a dollar every time you hated something. ;)

It's quite a rare mechanism for sure. I remember Banner Saga did it and Betrayal at Krondor. Can't think of many other decent cRPG's off hand though. It's much more common with Tactics games and JRPG's I think. Splitting up the party is more common.

LaHolt April 1st, 2022 07:40

People are confusing the perspective with Diablo and asking for left click to move.

Like all Immersive Sims, Weird West is an action game with rpg elements - not an rpg. Click to move wouldn't work when the game allows you to John Woo shoot-dodge.

Redglyph April 1st, 2022 09:43

TW3 forced the player to switch characters too, I didn't like it at all. Fortunately the weird mechanics of Ciri didn't have to be endured for too long.

With WW it's not just temporary apparently.

I understood that you unlocked abilities for your characters to evolve, explore, there's a story and so on, so it looks like a regular RPG to me. Maybe I'm wrong, I didn't play the game, and that depends on your definition of RPG.

But RPG or immersive sim doesn't matter, it's an action game without pause, so indeed I cannot imagine playing that with mouse clicks, even with a slow-down feature.

Excuse me?
Like what?
I could understand if you wrote "like all bullshit" or something, but that there I have no idea what are you talking about.

fadedc April 1st, 2022 15:20

From the PC gamer review, on the surface it reminds me a bit of Fallout, where the combat isn't great but the story and world make up for it. Only instead of mediocre turn based combat or mediocre first person shooter combat, it has mediocre isometric combat.

You're excused.

Shocking news: Weird West is available on GOG, at last.

I used to prefer that platform, but beware, they seem less and less reliable. I'm not sure it's their fault in this specific case, but they have started missing hotfixes and updates in other games lately. And their support doesn't reply anymore.

notdart April 16th, 2022 08:49

A lot of games will delay their release a couple of weeks under the presumption that steam makes it harder for the game to be copied. As for the patch issue that is quite annoying and I believe it has something to do with gog requiring more manual work on the backend while steam is a bit more automated.

That makes sense, I haven't seen this before but I'm not buying often.

It seems they are not enough for all they have to do, it's very annoying when there's nobody to answer questions if something goes wrong. Sometimes they still answer… after several months. I've heard one publisher saying they couldn't easily contact them either.

For example, there was a little hotfix for Expeditions Rome 3 days ago which never made it. I had the same issue with Mechajammer not long ago. And there is nothing to do about it, nobody knows. I can just hope the next patch will be released properly.

I like what they do and the freedom to upgrade or not, but it's getting too risky to get games over there, except old games that don't need any support or updates :-/

Couchpotato April 16th, 2022 12:40

Nah I say blame the developers nowadays for constantly patching their games. I wont derail the thread with this discussion but most members know my opinion already.

As for GOG yeah they do skip some patches for buggy games. As said already the process to update their games needs a more hand on approach to upload the patches.

Every GOG user also knows they don't patch games on the weekend.

JDR13 April 16th, 2022 18:45

I can't remember the last time I purchased a new game from GOG. Steam is just faster, more reliable, and more convenient (for me). I'll continue to purchase classic games from GOG though.

Redglyph April 16th, 2022 18:54

I must admit Steam has its advantages, and the patches are smaller.

I saw they added a zombie live event in Weird West, already. It's nice, they seem very motivated :D
