Witcher EE
Anyone get this to run after installing under XP SP2? Mine bitches about failing after appearing (AFAIFK) to pass TAGES (f|_|ck CP), also CRAPAGES makes it fail to run under win2k?!
The "patch" is a "mere" 1GB in size and the link fromt he "official" site is running at 23+h to download, while torrents are at 9+h?! WTF?! Didn't they already learn their lessons? The original release installed fine under XP, while this one it's like they all got drunk off their asses crammed some crap on DVDs and shipped it. [EDIT] Found "error log" but it makes zero sense. They should rename this POS to The Witche Enhanced Edition: We are killing PC gaming [/EDIT] Worst release that I;ve seen in Gods know how long. [EDIT2] I'm not even sure if this supposed patch applies, and I don't think that it does as they all say original to EE, and my witcher.exe is already 1.4.5.1280. [/EDIT2] |
While I sympathize with your frustration, we take a dim view on piracy around here. You might want to edit your editted edit. If it's not done somewhat soon, I'll do it for you as a courtesy.

<sigh>
OK, *IF* you bought the Enhanced Edition then you don't need the patch. That patch is for updating the original version of the game to the enhanced edition, which is why it's so huge. (If you bought the game in North America then you can get a patch to add some blood that's supposed to be there. It isn't even remotely critical, though, so you might as well just wait a few days for the servers to catch up to demand.) If you do own the older version, it sounds like something got messed up. Uninstall the game, reboot, install it again, register the game again, then do the update. |

Easy way to see if you need to patch is just check for updates in the start menu of the witcher.
The only download link has been slammed pretty hard, but i took my patch from Fileshack at 750K, took me only 20 min and i got it. I however realized that my copy was unregistered so i had to register it before i could install it. Ah, anyway - a free patch - well, if people want to pirate free stuff, then i suppose this is truly a strange world! :) |
I still don't like the game much, but I think it's much better now then it was before. It's just so boring with the point and click combat. Off course I knew they weren't gonna change that, but at least I know now it aren't those other things like the load/save stuff. (That was really annoying)

Does anyone know if I purchase the EE, is the blood patch already in there?
|
If you're in the US, you need the blood patch. The rest of us have blood practically spilling on the desk.
|
I received the new Enhanced Edition this afternoon. The contents improved considerably, including better map, more refined installation and game guides, etc. Now listening to music inspired by the game - real nice. It's great bargain to get the game with those quality bonuses.
The only sad thing is the esrb logo on my box, ewww…, guess i need the blood patch!? |
I just updated to EE myself and I'm going to give it another go; I quit about 2/3 through on my first try. After the first hour I can say that it's faster than the original and has at least a few worthwhile improvements.
I understand that the US version is very little different from the Euro version. Just the cards and one female model (aside from the blood which can be patched). You can always buy the UK version on GoGamer if that matters. edit: It's definitely improved but unfortunately not enough to make me want to continue past ch.1 again. If you haven't played the game, try the EE version but if you had mixed feelings about the original, as I did, it's not the answer, I'm afraid. |
I just finished it. Sided with the nonhumans this time. Still a great game. I doubt I'll be doing another replay any time soon, though -- it wasn't quite as much fun as the first two runs. The EE was a clear improvement in significant ways; I particularly liked the option of playing it in different languages, and the much shortened load times were a major plus too.
|
Was it not as fun because you had already played the game 2 times, or because the plot was not as good when siding with the non-humans? Please no spoilers, I'm just in the process of trying to decide which faction to support.
|
Oh, simply because I'd already played it twice -- I found myself just clicking through stuff because I remembered how it would go. The nonhuman plot itself surprised me positively all the way.
|
Ah good, then I guess I'll oblige my inner Trotsky and hang with the squirrels. Maybe I can turn them into socialists.
|
I had a big problem downloading the patch. It got so far and then I got an error message that the server reset or connection to sever lost. Then I did the simple act of logging into my IP provider first, then opening the game update option. DL worked on the first try. Not sure why that made a difference or if it did. Any thoughts?
|
Where did you (try to?) download the patch from?
|
I found it on the game site just by clicking the check for updates option when starting the game. Thus the reason I was not logged into the net via my provider.
|
Eh, the sciagsomething.pl server that hosts the files was very overloaded on the first few days of EE's release. There've since been many other mirrors.
|
I was thinking on giving it another try with the EE but after reading here I guess I don't have to. I didn't like the game that much (guess it's the click combat thing). I realized I'd be doing exactly the same things in combat throughout the game. And of course, I couldn't play a pure spellcaster.
