System Shock 2 crashes

I've got a problem with System Shock 2. It wouldn't start at the beginning but when I finally could do it it crashes after selecting class. Training works well but everytime I'm selecting any class it crashes to Windows. I'm using 64-bit Windows 7, is this the reason? I had the same problems on Windows XP 32-bit… Is there any solution for this crash?

Do you have a dual or quad core cpu? If so, then try setting it to use only one core for SS2.

Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL after launching the game (while it's still on the menu screen) to bring up you task manager, then select SS2 in "Applications". Right click on it, then select "go to process", then right click on the process and select "Set Affinity". There you can designate the number of cores you want to use.

This works in WindowsXP, but I can't guarantee it will work in Windows 7.

I've tried it already. It didn't help me with Windows XP nor with Windows 7 :(

Not sure then, SS runs fine for me in WinXP Pro 32 bit.

Did you check here?

Konjad, System Shock 2 rox. I'm actually playing it again, taking the psi route this time. I've tried running it in winxp and it does work but it eventually crashes. The only reliable solution is to run it on windows 98. That's what I've been using and it runs flawlessly. Also, make sure the comp you're using has only one core. Good luck, very good game. Strongly recommend playing in a dark room with surround sound speakers and some caffeine in ur blood.

I tried to run it in Vista and it required quite a few patches to run well.
There's a permanent solution for the multithread problem here. Then there's a problem with the color depth… this fix enables 32bit.

Huh? Works fine with my 8800GTS 512.

I just have to use a few tweaks to get it to run in WinXP.

hm, so its been resolved then. when i last tried it i only got to the main menu, which was all pink, then the game crashed. after googling it seemed other users had the same problem. something about the rendering and dithering in the dark engine not supported by some nvidia cards.

is this the fix you're using?

edit: it seems i had already tried that one, without success.
