The Legacy and Piratenleben are indeed good, I often visit the Legacy when I want to get info on really old games, and the Piratenleben seems to be (as far as I've heard) one of the better ones or even best Mods for Gothic 2.

Zaleukos December 4th, 2006 11:48

www.the-underdogs.info is great, but hasnt been updated for a while. I think real life finally caught up with the admin, so look at it while it still is up.

Corwin December 5th, 2006 02:40

Underdogs has always been a great place for games long unavailable!!

Arma December 6th, 2006 21:51

www.spiderwebsoftware.com , home of all things spiderweb like Geneforge and Avernum series.

Alrik Fassbauer December 7th, 2006 00:15

By the way, at www.revolution.co.uk it is possible to officially download Lure of the Temptress and Beneath a Steel Sky.

Real life has caught up with her several times before now, yet she always comes back. I wouldn't worry overmuch.

Zaleukos December 11th, 2006 15:18

www.taleworlds.com hosts Mount and Blade, an excellent "Elite with swords" game. You can play until reaching level 6 in the free version.

Corwin December 12th, 2006 02:51

We have long been supporters of M&B!! There's a report on the game I wrote over a year ago floating around somewhere. Dhruin is a very keen player!!

GothicGothicness December 12th, 2006 12:36

This site is great for freeware games, the RPG archieve is not that big, but there are some gems there! They have rather good taste too, the highest rated RPG for download is BAK… Tower of the Sorcerer which is a great game gets a high rating too.

http://www.free-addicting-games.com

Acleacius December 13th, 2006 03:04

Great idea HiddenX and thanks to everyone for the links. :)

I have wanted to try the Prelude to Darkness, on that link the full version says link no longer good casue of some violation of Terms of Use.
There is a 75 meg version linked in their download section, maybe a demo?

In reguard to Sith Lord Restoration they are content complete and just bug catching now, yay! :)

Dr. A December 13th, 2006 05:16

Oh yeah, Underdogs is a fantastic site for abandonware. It was the best site for me years ago when i was hunting old games, too bad that there haven't been any updates

We should make this thread a sticky

Corwin December 13th, 2006 06:34

One has but to ask!! :)

Acleacius December 13th, 2006 09:29

Certianly System Shock could be added here too, it freeware now correct?

Hey, the thread is stickied! Oh, what immense powers I have…Bow before me, mortals or I will smite thee with double posts!!!

Ahem…Sorry, megalomania spell has passed  You know, if we are talking about mods then we have to mention http://www.tessource.net/. It's a great source for ES Mods. I guess most people know about it anyway. The sad thing is that i've never completed an ES game before…

Corwin December 13th, 2006 15:13

Er, I can delete double posts too!! :)

Alrik Fassbauer December 13th, 2006 21:49

How do I contribute a game to the Underdogs page ?

Background : Larian had once made a tiny game called "Imprunner". I thought it would be a good idea to place it there to keep it from being forgotten.

And I've even got an official "okay". Literally.

Corwin December 14th, 2006 02:45

Don't know about the Dogs, but send a PM to Myrthos; we might be able to host it here?!!

Alrik Fassbauer December 14th, 2006 21:21

Hm, the idea isn't bad either.
It's just the point whether it is "good enough" for hosting … Anyway, I'll PM him.

Pladio December 14th, 2006 23:38

Here are some good links for Abandonware.

http://abandoneer.com/links.php

Zaleukos December 15th, 2006 10:48

Alrik: there is a suggestions subforum at the Underdogs site, but her todo-list is very long. I'm not sure its the best place to host a game. If you want to spread it after hosting it elsewhere you could "advertise" (in a mature and civilized way so you wont be censored for spam) it in their reasonably active forum though.

jcompton December 15th, 2006 19:44

No list of RPG mod resources is complete without the Infinity Engine modlist: http://modlist.pocketplane.net .

Thaurin December 15th, 2006 21:35

Can't believe you forgot the AGS website: :D

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/

Lots of great free amateur adventure games there (and of course a great tool for creating them yourself ;)). Oh, and of course there is:

http://www.scummvm.org/

For playing all your old LucasArt games and others on modern systems! Has links to a few old games that have been made free by the developers, too! (Beneath A Steel Sky, Flight of the Amazon Queens)

Alrik Fassbauer December 16th, 2006 15:52

Okay, thanks, Zaleukos.

Edit : Just wanted to add that SCUMMVM is available for Linux, too !

http://vogons.zetafleet.com/

Dez January 9th, 2007 16:48

Dunno whether this falls in this gategory, but a ww2 tactical shooter called hidden and dangerous is freeware. I heartly recommand it to any ww2 fan.

Given what I'm currently re-reading, that whole site makes me want a tzjin-anthony-ks

HiddenX January 10th, 2007 00:21

For non-Hitch-Hikers :-)

Quote:

It is a curious fact, and one to which no one knows quite how
much importance to attach, that something like 85\% of all known
worlds in the Galaxy, be they primitive or highly advanced, have
invented a drink called jynnan tonnyx, or gee-N'N-T'N-ix, or
jinond-o-nicks, or any one of a thousand or more variations on
the same phonetic theme. The drinks themselves are not the same,
and vary between the Sivolvian ''chinanto/mnigs'' which is ordinary
water server at slightly above room temperature, and the
Gagrakackan ''tzjin-anthony-ks'' which kills cows at a hundred
paces; and in fact the one common factor between all of them,
beyond the fact that the names sound the same, is that they were
all invented and named before the worlds concerned made contact
with any other worlds.

crpgnut January 10th, 2007 19:00

Yay! My 1st addition to this thread will be for the Yendorian Tales series of games.
Chapter 1 might be rough to get going in XP. Chapters 2 and 3 should work fine though.

http://www.swgames.com

Yendorian Tales Chapter 2 and 3 can best be described as Might and Magic 3-5 clones. The game looks and feels a lot like those games.

Cool looking stuff - I'll keep an eye on those …

Alrik Fassbauer January 10th, 2007 21:25

Ah. Another example of "how to exclude the world outside which doesn't use credit cards at all".

Jinksy January 15th, 2007 21:54

Star Control 2 (aka The Ur-Quan Masters) is freeware now. It's a lot like an old classic RPG called Planet's Edge, but with RPG elements sacrificed (and admittedly there weren't that many in PE) in favour of a great story.

skavenhorde February 6th, 2007 08:47

abandonia is a great site, tons of screenshots and reviews.

HiddenX February 11th, 2007 21:42

One of the best free modules for Neverwinter Nights 1:

Darkness over Daggerford

http://nwn.bioware.com/players/profile_daggerford.html

developed by Ossian Studios.

I can recommend this game for Baldur's Gate fans. Combat is fair / sometimes easy.
Great Story with many twists and sidequests. Watch out for Eastereggs :-)

Ionstormsucks February 15th, 2007 22:43

Ultima V - Lazarus

It's basically a remake of the old Ultima V built in the Dungeon Siege (1) engine. You must have Dungeon Siege installed to play the game.

Double-dog down recommend this one, as noted in my article at GamerDad last year.

I couldn't believe that with Corwin in this thread it hadn't been mentioned … !

crpgnut February 15th, 2007 22:55

Another game that I just thought about was Minions of Mirth. MoM is a single and somewhat MMORPG along the lines of Guild Wars. It was made by just two people primarily and then the community stepped in and start adding resources (quests, artwork, crafting, alchemy, etc). The game is like $30 to register but there is no monthly fee for playing. I haven't played this in about a year but it had quite a bit of content back then and was being updated constantly.

http://www.prairiegames.com

Corwin February 16th, 2007 03:26

I can recommend both Laz and MoM as great, fun games. For Laz check out my review at the Dot, and I wrote an interview with the devs of MoM back there as well. I'm too lazy to look up the links!! :)

Alrik Fassbauer February 16th, 2007 15:19

I'm just waiting for the German-language release of Lazarus, and the French-language version has already been released !

Icefire February 19th, 2007 23:17

http://www.shadowflare.us/
Pretty good action rpg. It was sold in 4 chapters, and I believe the first is free. A few features were cool. Worth checking out.
