A similar movie that was fairly decent was Colossus--The Forbin Project. Just sixties American sci-fi, though, not avante-garde. Something with a weird creature feature/science gone awry tinge that's worth catching is Phase IV, if you haven't ever seen it Sammy. I think you'd enjoy it.
