Agree about XNA, but suppose it is possible to do something with it if you want to spend 4 years developing your own engine, as here… And this does look like quite a competent effort on first glance; just not my type of game. With only 30 backers and just shy of 400 after 3 days it doesn't look like it's going to get much support and projects tend to completely alienate the Americans.
